I found my first playthrough a bit disconcerting, what with some of Liara's dialogue not being especially romantic, and also Vega being flirty.  Was concerned I'd somehow messed something up.  It worked better on subsequent playthroughs.

Yeah, it didn't bother me too much either. I'd rather some of that was written a bit differently, but it didn't annoy me to the point where I couldn't enjoy her character's scenes. In fact overall I'd say most of her best scenes in the series were in ME3. (the others in LotSB)

I am inclined to agree with you. The name in stars and the gift before suicide mission rank pretty damn high, if not *the* highest amongst Liara scenes for me. The whole date on Normandy scene is pretty bittersweet and enjoyable as well. And who could forger that kiss at the end of LotSB :)

I'm trying to figure out if there are pictures I haven't posted yet, but I just can't remember. So frack it! Pictures for everybody, no matter if repost or not.

It's been a little bit of a while since I've played any ME, I have to admit -- I think my computer might need a video card to pull the game off, though the operative word is might. I've run Skyrim on this thing on medium on internal graphics. But anyway, that's not the point.

The point is I remember how outright annoyed people in the old Liara Discussion Group were about some of the dialogue. "Oh, she's trying to say they're just friends? After all we've been through together?" (Yeah, the pronoun confusion is probably key.) Of course it took a while to unearth how that dialogue went in a non-romanced context, because of course Nate, Myst, Sunnie and all of us came in with our canon!Sheps first. And honestly I think it was written for that context, for that branch of the conversation. As much as I'd love them to have scripted a different intro ... well, time was too short on that game as it is, the ending was barely written at all three months after the game shipped and all that (and the first ending, let me tell you, was idiotic. We complain about three branches and the same result, go look at a 'stay alive in the universe' vs. 'let the Reapers eradicate us' tree... I digress), so we're lucky that the writing was that GOOD with Liara almost all of the time.

Seriously, from what I can tell, when BioWare gets Valve Time to do a game they knock it out of the park. I'm trying to figure out how long they're going to get on Andromeda, but my friend with Inquisition is telling me that it's the greatest game he's ever played -- and oddly enough, the first BioWare game he's ever  played... well, I'll have to see about Baldur's Gate and all that. Still, yeah, I'm optimistic as long as they get at least two years. (Obsidian is the go-to for if they get eighteen months and they forgot to tell them that three months ago.)

Anyway, that's my thoughts. If you can understand them, I think I need another three hours sleep... :P

Yeah, Liara probably should be the link for a future game. Set far enough into the future that everyone who isn't her should be dead... the problem here is the same issue New Vegas had with playable epilogues -- the changes are so galaxy altering between the three endings (amazing that I'm saying that considering the cupcake stunt -- remember that? Three colors, all the same flavor? -- but it really is true now that we know the galaxy hasn't been atomized) that it'd be hard to create a story that would be the same in any one of the three. I mean, benevolent Reapers could squash a lot of threats that no-AI-galaxies would shake at. Also f**k Synthesis. :P

Okay... this probably makes for a double post, but now that there's info on the new game... that... makes too much sense. Different galaxy altogether, why didn't I think of that?

It definitely could have been a lot worse. There might be a couple things I'd change if I could, but overall I have very little to complain about regarding her content in ME3.

No, you just do not know what porn is.

You sir, are a hero :) Seriously, that was an interesting(to me, at least) debate I wanted to instigate, but after I got banned I decided it's better not to warm it up even more. Namely, the whole pornography vs erotica. But probably better not to go there.

Here's one I haven't seen yet... quite like it, I have to say.

Nudity to me at least, isn't necessarily pornographic. Of course everyone's definition for what is or isn't obscene varies.

I wouldn't lump in Pineappletree's stuff for example, which in my opinion is both tasteful and inoffensive, with a graphic depiction of characters engaged in a sexual act. To compare it to films, would it get a movie an R rating or an NC-17 or X rating? An image that would get a film an NC-17 or X rating is porn (softcore & hard respectively), the former isn't.

One eensy-weensy oversight in ME3's sex scene was that her eyes didn't change. I like it when her eyes change - I guess that makes it all seem somehow more exotic or something. I'm glad they remembered to do that during the gift scene at the FOB. Would have liked to see her eyes change in LotSB, too.

I am going to dissent here somewhat: I think Liara's dialogue is jarringly out of place in a number of instances. Naturally, there is the lock-in scene when you have already been romancing Liara all along. "Friends?" We were talking about little blue babies not that long ago! A good deal of her dialogue on Thessia is also over-the-top. Her reaction to Banshees is totally disproportional. We have been fighting Human husks for 3 years. We have been fighting Turian, Krogan, Rachni, and Batarian husks for while. Certainly she didn't believe the Asari would be exempt? And her dismay at the Asari government keeping the Prothean beacon at the temple secret is totally discordant with her role as the Shadow Broker, the greatest dealer in secrets in the galaxy. And I don't really get why she is so flustered at the idea that the Protheans meddleed in Asari development. This is news? And so what if they did? What, specifically, is her objection? Was Thessia supposed to be the Liara-falls-to-pieces mission? Why?

Was the same person who wrote Liara elsewhere responsible for her Thessia dialogue?

The whole friends stuff is there for gameplay reasons so people can change their mind.

The Banshee thing? I don´t think thatshe believed they would be exempt but it´s another thing to see it with your own eyes. We hear about atrocities people from time to time but still people who watch it with their own eyes get traumatized.

Never got why the Shadow Broker is supposed to know nearly everything. Sounded a bit over the top like he had some special power he could use on cooldown to get a secret.

The temple and her disbelief that the Protheans meddled was a bit odd. She is an archaeologist. I think she would know how one of the main goddesses of her people and her servants look like especially if they look so alien.

I certainly agree with you that Pineappletree's work shouldn't be designated as pornographic, even though it contains nudity. I consider their work tasteful and artistic, the best possible way to appreciate the beauty of the body without being vulgar about it.

That said, I think that even depiction of sexual act can be erotic and not pornographic simply by virtue of showing two people going at it. Part of it are personal boundaries, of course and I consider myself to be pretty lax when it comes to those. I think pictures are actually better for achieving that than movies are. Lack of sound works in it's favour, at least for me.

I'm going to offer my reasons why I disagree with you, ones that would likely get me branded as Liaramancer outside this thread by at least one person. Luckily, they are unlikely to show up here. And even if they do, I don't really care either way.

The whole "Friends" scene I think can be divided into two categories: one is the writer offering you your last way out of this relationship... you know, if you, by some chance, managed to **** it all the way to here and you now want out. The other... well, I actually think it wouldn't be too much to say that Liara herself is offering you that same chance. The line happens after the attempted Cerberus coup... Shepard has been through hell of a lot so far and Liara of all people probably knows that the road is only going to get rockier from here. It's not unreasonable to think she sees herself as distraction to Shepard and she would offer them one final and tender chance to break the relationship, on her own terms, since that would hurt Liara less. The old "if you love them, let them go" adage at work.

Her reaction to banshees strikes me more at Ali Hillis engaging in a(admittedly pretty rare) Narm moment... at least, that's what it sounds to me. Character wise, yes, we have been fighting Reapers for some time now. We've seen all kinds of horrors, but for Liara, seeing banshees, the horror of the war finally strikes home. And unlike the rest of Shepard's group, she is still a civilian at heart... she had no formal military training of any kind. Compare her reaction to that of Garrus when he sees Marauders(which are several steps down the creepy ladder when compared to banshees). One is the reaction of trained soldier, the other is a reaction of a(pretty badass, but still quite out of her comfort zone) civilian.

The Beacon... I believe Liara willfully blinded herself to any ugly side of the asari. Was it shortsighted? Certainly. But she seems like the type that is proud of her own race and finds it hard to believe they would do something like that. And she believes that with good reason. There is also the fact that it would, without shadow of doubt, incriminate her mother for some really, really... really shady business. It's the last thing Benezia needs after the whole Saren debacle.

As for Protheans... imagine finding today, after you believed for your whole life that everything you and your whole race has ever achieved, everything you've been proud of... has been because you've basically been a glorified lab rat for aliens with God complex. I don't blame Liara for not wanting to believe. Which is how I've always seen her scene at the temple... it's not that she doesn't believe what she hears/sees. She doesn't want to believe, she's grasping at straws, anything that will let her keep the preconceived picture of the asari... but at the end of the scene, you can basically see that she know... they are speaking the truth. At that point, she's pretty much convincing herself more than she does Javik/Garrus/Kaidan/you name it.

She seems to know the lore of the religion and its iconography pretty well. The protheans went through some changes ingame but did no one know how they looked like?

The dialogue in the temple was weird. I saw the staue thought "this dude looks a lot like my prothean companion over there" and clicked on it.

Liara told us "this is XY, servant of Athame, who is taught us mathematics  according to Athame´s religion." Then Javik said "Yeah you know he´s was no fictional servant of a fictional goddess, he was a prothean." and I thought something like "yeah, thanks, Captain Obvious." and Liara went "What? It can´t be!"

My dear, you have a doctor in archaeology and are an expert for the Protheans. The Hanar worship them as higher beings and the prothean guy, living on our ship for weeks or months never got tired telling us that they watched us and how primitive we were. The evidence is right in front of you.

The dialogue was so weird, I would have checked her if she suffered any head trauma in one of the previous battles.

Liara is far more accepting of the possibility that the Asari were guided by the Protheans if it's not Javik who tells her (I don't have "From Ashes" and her dialogue is is more or less ok). I think the main problem with Thessia is that the mission was changed signifigantly in many ways during the development process, that's why some of the dialogue is weird. All the content in the DLC is totally different from what was in that script and it's clear they totally rewrote that part of the game. According to the early leaked script, Javik was, at one point supposed to be part of the main storyline. He is actually the Catalyst in the early draft. That clearly changed at some point and Javik's role went from being integral to the plot to DLC friendly unimportance.

You know, despite several playthroughs I never noticed that. That one might be good for the 'things you didn't notice until now' thread.

I suppose it occurs off screen, but it would have been a nice touch if every one of her scenes had included it for continuity's sake.

I didn't mind that too much, and thought it was fairly consistent with her character. Other than maybe Kaidan she is the most empathetic of the squadmates, to the extent that she'll even say she pities Saren in the first game. I thought it was in character for her to have an emotional reaction to seeing the Banshees.

While she has seen Reaper abominations before I think the reaction to the Banshee makes some sense considering it would probably be a natural tendency for someone to be more horrified at seeing their own species corrupted. That would probably up the body horror factor.

That is at least assuming the Leviathan mission where you run into Banshees wasn't completed with Liara in tow, before going to the monastery. If she has already seen Banshees the reaction doesn't make sense.

It doesn't personally offend me either, and I agree with you fully. But I also get that it crosses some other people's boundaries.

I think part of it as well as that she felt personally betrayed and humiliated that Benezia was in on the secret and had hid it from her. Her dialogue after seems to indicate that was a part of it, since she says something about Benezia thinking her a fool.

Yeah, that probably plays a part of it as well. Though she does seem to accept EDI's explanation easily... she probably realizes EDI is right.

On a different note, what does it say about the character when people are still making a new artwork three years after the trilogy has ended? :) Bioware did something right with Liara, that's for sure.

Hey there is a Liara thread? Well let's get started.

I had no idea I can romance someone in the game so when Liara threw herself at me I was taken by surprise and then I was betting that I could and should go for Ashley but I didn't want to say no and dump Liara like that so I went for her. Since then whenever I start a new playthrough I end up with Liara (I haven't romanced anyone else xD). Love her progression from a shy and awkward scientist to a cold and cynical Shadow Broker.
