First, it is actually possible to lay on your back and turn your head to the side. Try it, it's not even difficult.

Second, I always presumed that they prefer neck-pillows that support the neck, or they usually lay on the side, or they have specially shaped pillows that accomodate the crest. Again, this isn't hard to make.

I did try it and I can't turn my neck enough sideways so that my crests would be to the side if I had them. I agree that the asari probably have special pillows but Liara was lying down on Shep's bed which had normal-looking pillows. It makes me wonder if they are more flexible then they appear.

Pay closer attention. Neither of them are really lying down when they're on their backs. They're using their arms to prop themselves up above the pillows so that it gives the illusion they're laying down when, in fact, they're not.

Am I somehow offending you with my Liara/asari-related question/discussion posted on the Liara thread on the ME discussion board? Right now, I have the game open and I am staring at an unconscious asari lying with the back of her head flush against a bed in the hospital so perhaps, you should have paid closer attention? Her scalp crests just kind of disappear into the bed so no answer there. I was hoping other Liara fans might have their theories as to what their scalp crests are really like. Granted, it is a silly question but I grow tired of the endless discussion about the endings when no one will ever convince anyone else.

Ah, the hospital. I hadn't really noticed those, but that's exactly the point.

Artists and animators only have a limited amount of time. Where the player is likely to pay attention, they're very careful to avoid graphics issues that happen with 3d modeling, like one object (head crests) clipping through another object (pillows). Where the players aren't likely to pay attention, the animators and artists don't take as much care. (i.e., random patients lying on hospital beds that the player is never going to interact with.)

Pay attention in the scenes where Liara and Shepard are laying on the bed in Shepard's cabin on the Normandy. You'll see that to avoid clipping, both Liara and Shepard are propped up on their elbows when they're laying on their backs.

You'll never find this answer in any of Bioware's games, because the artists don't have time to model special pillows for asari. And you're not going to find any mention of it in any of the novels written by Bioware, because pillows are background objects. They're almost never of any importance to a story.

One additional thing I noticed: When Thane kills Nassana Dantius, he lays her on her back against the console she was using. Her head is turned to the side, a full ninety degrees. Since he shot her, and didn't break her neck, the scene implies that asari have much more flexible spines than humans... or it's just an artist avoiding clipping issues since asari don't demonstrate that degree of flexibility anywhere else in the game.

So, in other words, we just don't know. I personally think that while the asari may have specialized pillows for comfort, their crests are just flexible enough to sleep on their backs even without it. Now the turians, on the other hand, look like their head fringes would snap right off if they fell back with enough force. I can't even begin to think of a plausible reason why such things  would have developed from an evolutionary standpoint.

Video editing is a hobby of mine, and I decided to make a Liara Romance tribute video.  I've made plenty of Dragon Age videos, but this is my first Mass Effect one.  I hope you guys enjoy it :)

I like your Shep. Very distinctive looking. I take it this is modded?

Well for the first time since the extended cut came out I've finished a ME3 game, I guess time helps or I just don't give a **** anymore, as I didn't have any trouble playing. My Shep romanced Sam, love that voice. Started a new game with a Liara romance been a long time without a blue girlfriend.

Oh, Dani86 cool name. :)

Just thought I would mention that I have started an ME3 insanity playthrough in which Liara will be part of the squad on every mission. Liara is Shepard's LI as well. Playlist is here.

I only just found out that Legion danced in your last ME2 video. Something for me to look for on my next run! :)

Is your fanfic on  Archive too? I think I'm going to have to read it and think it is a better experience on Archive. I've also written a fanfic that is a love letter to both Liara and Femshep. It is on both sites and can be found at http://archiveofouro...hapters/7958913  if any Liara fans are interested. :) I hope that didn't come off as shameless self-promotion even if it kind of was. I'm definitely going to check your story out because you had me at 'long love letter to Liara'. ;)

Second, I always presumed that they prefer neck-pillows that support the neck, or they usually lay on the side, or they have specially shaped pillows that accomodate the crest. Again, this isn't hard to make.

Maybe a sloping pillow, just enough to support the head and neck, that prevent the end of the crest from hitting the surface of the bed. I would presume however most just turn their heads.

:D  I thought this thread's dead but then I'm hardly checking every one when I drop in. I'm currently going through a ME trilogy run, with MEHEM and CEM installed for ME3 (otherwise I won't play it). I've to confess I'm fascinated with the asari crest design and the folded down short tentacles just underneath it. I've always wonder if the crest can be lifted a little and how the asari clean them. With a brush I guess. :D

As Liara says, "They're semi-cartilaginous scalp crests that grow into shape."

Like your nose. Anchored to bone, part cartilage, flexible because otherwise it'd be too easy to break casually.

So they can be lifted, just a little. I can imagine that they're very sensitive underneath simply because they're not exposed to stimuli all that often.

From the first time I played ME1 to the last time I played ME3, Liara is my one true. I have tried every possible romance through out the series to varying combinations and none are as consuming as hers. My Shepards heart will forever beat bright Asari blue.

I imagine the cleaning of one's 'tentacles' would be difficult as there appears to be a lot of folds and hidey places on the asari head. I also imagine that there is a multi-billion credit industry on Thessia devoted to scalp crest hygiene and beautifying.  The asari seem very intelligent and compassionate but also very much into aesthetics and being beautiful so I imagine any business devoted to vanity does well on Thessia and other asari worlds.

Three years ago, my "Canon" Shepard's LI was Miranda. It's been that way since 2010. After 3 years, I decided to change my canon in 3 ways: Class, ME3 Ending, and Romance. Shepard is now a Soldier, and the ending is now Synthesis. The Default Male Shepard Face ("Sheploo" Face) remains! As for the romance... At first I decided to pursue a relationship with Ashley, but once I saved Liara from Therum, I quickly decided at the last minute that I wanted to romance her instead. I couldn't help it. I could neither hold it in, nor resist any longer. Liara is too beautiful, smart, cute, powerful, and mysterious to ignore any longer. I did consider her once, but I chickened out...was too scared of change. I love aliens. Hell, most of my favorite characters in Mass Effect are not human: Liara, Garrus, Wrex, Grunt, Mordin, Thane, Tali, Legion, Kirrahe, etc. So, there you have it, folks.

Couldn't agree more. :)
