Am I somehow offending you with my Liara/asari-related question/discussion posted on the Liara thread on the ME discussion board? Right now, I have the game open and I am staring at an unconscious asari lying with the back of her head flush against a bed in the hospital so perhaps, you should have paid closer attention? Her scalp crests just kind of disappear into the bed so no answer there. I was hoping other Liara fans might have their theories as to what their scalp crests are really like. Granted, it is a silly question but I grow tired of the endless discussion about the endings when no one will ever convince anyone else.
Ah, the hospital. I hadn't really noticed those, but that's exactly the point.
Artists and animators only have a limited amount of time. Where the player is likely to pay attention, they're very careful to avoid graphics issues that happen with 3d modeling, like one object (head crests) clipping through another object (pillows). Where the players aren't likely to pay attention, the animators and artists don't take as much care. (i.e., random patients lying on hospital beds that the player is never going to interact with.)
Pay attention in the scenes where Liara and Shepard are laying on the bed in Shepard's cabin on the Normandy. You'll see that to avoid clipping, both Liara and Shepard are propped up on their elbows when they're laying on their backs.
You'll never find this answer in any of Bioware's games, because the artists don't have time to model special pillows for asari. And you're not going to find any mention of it in any of the novels written by Bioware, because pillows are background objects. They're almost never of any importance to a story.
One additional thing I noticed: When Thane kills Nassana Dantius, he lays her on her back against the console she was using. Her head is turned to the side, a full ninety degrees. Since he shot her, and didn't break her neck, the scene implies that asari have much more flexible spines than humans... or it's just an artist avoiding clipping issues since asari don't demonstrate that degree of flexibility anywhere else in the game.
