It is just a statue though the in-game model looks solid and not disproportioned to an insane degree. We get to visit Thessia hopefully so there should be more lore there too.
I think the number one reason that I take the Asari seriously is because the characters in the game do too. If they simply dismissed them as purely eyecandy I'd give up on it but because they are objectified in a romanticised fashion yet juxtaposed with other races and trated by those as more than alien hotties I can buy the complexity and even go looking for it.

As for the Asari, I do like a woman who can stand up for themself and that seems to be the case with most Asari. A strong and willful people who command respect. They are in the game as eye candy, there is no two ways about it, yet I think their strength and respect shows through more than their chests. Although thats just me, as for every 12 year old who gets hold of the game....
