If Sunnie or anyone else wishes to continue the statue discussion, I'll try to get back to you tomorrow morning. Right now there's a certain sack that need a hittin'.

Stay classy.

If painting depicts the Liara we all know, then I agree. But painitng won't change the restructuring of what Liara is in that statue. Painted or not, the physical features, sans coloring, is already there. I actually think it may make my impressions worse since painting it will highlight those changes even more.

I'm waiting till I see the final product after painted and such before I pass a judgement personally. The breast size, the slimiline figure and such is fine by me, that is the style the artist uses to create his products. As for the face until I see the final product I can't justify criticizing it as it may or may not turn out to resemble Liara.

At this stage I don't know if will or won't. Hence the waiting till it's finished.

But I am basing my visual of that statue on the physical features that have been Liara now for almost four years. She didn't have a corset bound waist-line, exaggerated breast and an anime face, sorry, but that's not happening That body and look on the face in that statue is not even close, that's why it bothers me. IF that is something to market outside of the Liara in the ME series, I won't buy it. Let's put it this way, I wouldn't take a picture of Charlize Theron, hang it on my wall, and imagine that she was my wife, I love my wife just the way she is.

I like Liara for the Liara I have seen all of this time. She doesn't need plastic surgery, she is great as she is.
:P

Liara's appearance hasn't been touched. The only difference is she's being rendered in a dramatically different style. A style for which the company who makes these statues is known. I'm no anime aficionado, but according to my experience with the subject; when you take away other defining features such as hair and clothing, I think you'd find that many characters drawn in anime style look fundimentally similar. Now, Liara doesn't have hair, but she does have other recognizable features such as her crest coloration and armor; things that a Mass Effect fan would recognize, and they are aiming for the Mass Effect fan demographic with this.

More to the point; how does this officially change her cannonial appearance? Mass Effect isn't anime, but this statue is, thusly Liara looks different in this instance because of the style. That's the extent of it, as far as I see it.

If this statue in any way alters or has altered Liara's appearance in the game or anything else, I will personally sautee my particularly fashionable fedora with onions, pour some gravy on that sucker and chow down.

To say that her appearance hasn't been touched is a rather derpy thing to say. I don't care if its anime/manga or not, it still does not even remotely look like Liara's face. It looks nothing like her game or official BioWare art appearances.
Is this going to be a Japan only statue, or is it intended for the NA/EU markets? If it's intended for Japan, then thats fine, but I believe that it is intended for NA/EU markets, so they better at least make her face somewhat similar to her canonized appearance. And if Bioware does approve it and sell it in NA/EU, then they are officially approving a change to her canonized appearance.

Also, the style is not to blame for her not looking like Liara, it's the artist not trying to stay true to her looks and just making it look like everything else popular in their own culture.

I don't like the statue, but then I left anime behind back in 1983. Had my fill of it.  I respect the talent and the art, but it's just not my cup of crack.  That said, I see why people like it.  For myself, I would no more rather see a anime Liara than a grundge or emo Liara.  Goth Liara or Punk Liara ... I might go for that. :P

I just got back from a nice short 6 and a half hour shift in work to find 3 new pages. I'll be going to bed soon and by time I wake up it'll probably be an extra 5 pages to catch up on lol...by the way, wedding dress Liara in ME3 would equal the following:

Don't worry, folks. Turns out we were wrong. The statue isn't ugly, insulting, embarrassing, etc.

Turns out it's just "stylized."

I don't know about anyone else, but I sure am relieved.

I don't know what to tell you, man. You should have known what to expect when the concept art for this statue came out some months ago. The (almost) finished product is very similar to it. It's not really their fault if you were expecting something else.

I think the current figure is fine, though the face in it's current form I can't form a reliable opinion about because I want to see how it looks painted. If there are going to be different versions thats great and if not I'm not that upset over it, I'm personally fairly happy with current one with lingering questions about face itself with desire to see it painted.

I also want to see other figurines of other crew members too. But Liara one to start with the quality of casting and modeling is very high imho. The style is ok with me in general. To me the breasts issue is mountain being made of molehills 'literally' in both figure size and peoples complaints. However I can very much see why the face is an issue for some.

I was kinda hoping that the statue would be a little less ridiculous than the concept art. Turns out it was even worse.
Oh well.

Look, Hudson.

There are a lot of reasons to commission or produce ~stylized~ artwork;

-To use nontraditional aesthetics in order to more vividly portray nuances of character.
-To reinterpret a theme that has become stale from a more frenetic perspective.
-Because it looks cool.
-To encourage either the audience or the artist to reevaluate preconceptions.
-To subsume the original form into a broader artistic statement.
-And many more!

~stylized~ artwork can be done well, even in the questionably meritorious style championed by this here Bishoujo line.

For instance:

http://2.bp.blogspot...k-phoenix-3.jpg

I feel that this Dark Phoenix figure, while just as stylized as the liara figre and just as exaggerated in proportions, still adequately converys the character of Dark Phoenix while working within the standards of exaggerated cutsifying and sensualization that these things are apparently supposed to maintain.

The gaze that is somehow simultaneously piercing and vacant,
the dramatic twists of cosmic hellfire (alright, jury's still out on that one),
the oddly sinuous posture within the range of human motion but not within the normal purview of human body language...

it's not my cup of tea, but, for what it is, it works.

This Liara statuette thingummy, though...

It's not that people don't get the style of sculpture

it's that it is just outright bad.

It doesn't appear to be trying to make any emotive statement via its peculiarities.

It isn't encouraging me to explore any different perspective, unless whatever convoluted and tortuous reasoning that leads to Liara=babby-headed boob monster is what they were going for, which frankly shouldn't really count.

Its "stylization" doesn't really convey or enhance anything about the character, other than maybe the idea that she is a weird babby-headed boob monster.

It doesn't look cool.

It isn't doing anything other than looking like a weird, babby-headed boob monster.

So unless making Liara look like a babby-headed boob monster is somehow a desireable goal, I don't see how the figure is a success outside of the babby-headed boob monster-buying demographic.

I like this thread, people are more mature here in their response's. Unlike the other one where it's all cultural bashing, anime hate and calling each other pedos for liking the style of figurine or claiming it's all hentai. In here people are generally expressing themselves in much more mature manner with they like, they dislike or they would prefer.

@Pups of War

I agree'd with everything you said but did you really need to include those last few lines... Bit of over reaction. The rest was fine until then. Though it did remind me of bobble-head creations. I would love Bobble-head figures of all the crew. :D

This will probably get lost under the sea of Liara statue debates, but ...

I've been trying to get into Liara's head recently as to why she likes (or loves) each of my Shepards. Has anyone written fanfic based on Liara's perspective? If so, I'd love to read them. Thanks!

 Of course, you can be a fan of both.

The beef I have with this statue isn't the boob size, or even her face (although I agree, it doesn't look like Liara's face).  It's that Liara's the em-effing Shadow Broker, a biotic badass, and part of a team of galactic heroes.

The pose she's in, crushing her boobs together, wearing something that gives her ******...that is more "teehee, wish I were wearing a schoolgirl kilt so I could give you a better upskirt shot!"  Liara has warmth and softness in her personality, but I don't recall her using her sexuality as a tool. This pose still feels completely out of character for her, UNLESS she were trying to con some meathead into giving her information.  But again, she's the Shadow Broker.  She has legions of agents and informants to do that kind of grunt work for her.

This is absolutely not to say one cannot be coquettish and competent at the same time.  I'm just saying that to me, the pose diminishes her character further than should be necessary to have the kind of ****** appeal they're going for here.  It doesn't zomg-ruin-the-game or anything, but it does make me roll my eyes, and it does keep me from shelling out money.
