Now that I think about it, it's possible that these 'extra lines' are simply an introduction. These lines could be simple like: Liara: "Remember all the trouble we got into, taking out the old SB"
Shepard: "Tell me about it. The bombing on Illium, running across the outside of this ship..."

Result: New player now knows what happened in Lotsb. Goal accomplished.

I'm not sure that would work. I played ME2 first and a lot of the references to the first game kinda slipped past me since I wouldn't have known what they were talking about. If something like what you said happened, I can imagine Liara later on talking about the SB and the new player not having a clue because they weren't paying full attention to what she said earlier.

Mind you it's still probably the best solution regardless without it feeling too contrived.

The new player shouldn't be surprised. You start ME3 without ever having played ME1 and ME2. Congratulations, you just skipped 2/3 of the game, no wonder you're confused:P

The new people should be glad BioWare is actually trying to help them on their way, probably EA's idea in trying to maximize sales. I myself wouldn't put that much effort into it. Who in their right mind would start with the 3rd installment of a trilogy anyway, especially since ME1 and ME2 aren't so old that they're hopelessly outdated and therefore unplayable.

CD Project RED for example does no such thing. Try to play Witcher 2 without playing 1 and you have no idea what's actually going on. Dozens of terms from the previous game get thrown in your face and you're left wondering since it never really gets explained.

I'd have thought making ME3 normally (without all the noob hand holding e.g. having Vega as a squaddie STOP WASTING A SQUAD MATE SLOT DAMN IT) would have improved sales ... because then people would see it as "lets play ME1 and ME2 so ME3 actually makes sense".

Then again I'm not exactly a pro at marketing so I'm probably wrong. Though I am pretty good at getting my friends interested in Bioware games since I emphasise the good points and "forget" to mention any bad points ... :innocent:

My thoughts exactly though I cannot comment on Vega. We know nothing about him so I'll reserve judgment until I know more about his character.
*Time for a little EA bashing - don't worry, I'll keep it civil*

EA desperately tries to cater to the shooter fans by showing mostly pure combat trailers and action. Even though I'm not one myself, I think neither ME1 nor ME2 would cater too much to the hardcore shooter fans. EA might do this because they feel new shooter fans having to play through ME1 and ME2 first would actually scare them away from ME3 because someone focussing only on combat would probably be dissapointed with ME1 and 2.

Initially I only played SWKOTOR because I was (still am actually) into the Star Wars universe. After that, a friend told me of this new game called 'Dragon Age Origins' and he vouched for it's awesomeness so I proceeded to get it. Later I was trying to convince that same friend to try out Half Life 2 (the only shooter to date I genuinely found interesting) and he was willing to try it provided I tried out Mass Effect. So I did. Guess a very big 'thank you' is in order:pinched:

If I were to advise friends to play ME3 however, I would tell them to first play ME1 and ME2 because that would make the story so much more compelling. Sadly, EA doesn't seem to share this viewpoint.

You can't make mass effect game completely 'new guy-friendly'. I played ME2 before ME1 and the first time I played it I was just like, who's Saren, or Sovereign, what are the reapers, who are these guys who seem to know me, why am I working for this Cerberus, Why is everyone saying that I'm working for the terrorists, I don't even know who I am or what I've done, I'm obviously some sort of hero but what is this battle of the citadel??? And reading the codex didn't help at all, it was just the same thing: 'hmm.. the geth? what are those? oh, they're created by the quarians. what are quarians?

So after that I just had to play ME1 and found out about all those things and of course I wanted to know the whole story, and now I've played both of them through multiple times and I got hooked ... But anyways the point is that you can't understand the story if you haven't played previous games, so that 'The best time to jump into ME trilogy' is just bull sh!t.  And as you said it might even be better if they won't give too much information for the new players, so after they've played ME3 they're still wandering: 'what was this and that' and then they just have to find out i.e. they're going to play ME1 and ME2 = more money for BW. If you can't get them to understand the story anyway, why waste time and resources just that they could understand a little bit, but still they can't get the big picture.

I doubt they'll pull a "Remember that, Shepard?" for those who never played it. First of all, they'd have to default whether you agree to continue the relationship, or whether you even went into your cabin. Same for what happens in the cabin. I also imagine you'd get the "Remember that, Shepard?" anyways, just like being retold stuff you actually did do in ME2.

Casey says they'll be changes. So I imagine it'll just go like this:

Shepard: So, you're the Shadow Broker now?

Liara: Yes. Cerberus gave me intel that helped track him down.

Shepard: And you killed him?

Liara: Yes. In order to save Feron. Then... I just... took over. And have been running the place since.

Not to be disrespectful of Liara but I don't think she could take Vasir all by herself. Liara is a powerful Biotic, but so was Vasir, not to mention Spectre training and equipment, plus SB's agents.
I think she would either get help from Cerberus agents, or perhaps some of her own contacts on Illium. Pretty sure she could have pulled a few favors from her contacts.

But if Shepard would have never been there, Liara wouldn't have left the information of where she and Sekat were supposed to meet for Shepard and therefore Vasir wouldn't have gotten after Liara and they wouldn't have even fought in the first place. But of course Liara would have still needed some hired muscle to take out the SB and his mercs.

I'm stimply sticking to sunny's explanation: Shepard did help Liara take out the Shadow Broker, only it happened off screen if the player for some odd reason didn't do Lotsb.

Indeed. Why can't Europe get it on friday then USA the next wednessday. *Raises flameshield*

If I can just hold out until november 11th then it will do. I'll spend about a month playing Elder Scrolls V. Then SWTOR should be out some day which will keep me distracted until march 9th...

The most horrible thing is that my exams are at the same time with ME3 being released, so that means I have to wait 2 weeks before I can start playing it :crying: otherwise if I start playing it sooner I'll just end up gaming 24/7 when I should be studying for those exams. And I really don't want to screw up those final exams just because I was playing Mass Effect... I think I have to hide that disc somewhere, perhaps in my wardrobe or something :( ... two frigging weeks
I really have to stay out of the internet during those two weeks in order to avoid all possible spoilers.

Look at it in a positive side, finishing your exams will have the reward of playing ME3 ;)

What sucks for me is that if I want to complete ME3 slowly (few hours a day rather than a week-long binge like I did with ME1) I'm going to have to avoid contact with my friends since they're preordering it too. I mean knowing them they'll end up talking about EPIC SPOILERS X, Y AND Z which would ruin it for me :/

Yeah, of course I'm going to take care of those exams first and really study for them instead of playing ME3... But the good thing is that after those exams, there will be no school or anything for me in a few months, so there will be plenty of time to play ME3 without any interruptions :P And that studying should hopefully take enough of my time that I really won't have any extra time thinking about playing ME3

I've actually booked two nights off work so I can play ME3 non-stop in two all day sessions lol.

Annoying thing is the US release being before Europe, it means no going on the internet leading up to it.
