I am not sure why she gets all the hate, but I can see why people could be consudes about her character. She is a bit of an airhead in ME1 she just kinda got swept up in this wild goose chase after Saren, and (for those who chose it to be) got into a relationship with a human, almost out of the blue (no pun intended xD). And in ME2 she's like "all grown up" and srs bzns and Shadow Broker this and Shadow Broker that, it was really out of character for her, of course once you complete her missions and do the LotSB it all becomes clear especially in the end when she almost has a nervous breakdown.
I'm not sure ME2 Liara is that far out of her character. We noticed Liara is brave, capable and smart and the fact that she got swept up in ME1 didn't change this. Like you said she was caught off guard. After having spent 50 years (almost half of her life) studying remote prothean digsites she simply forgot about most of her social skills. Being the daughter of a well respected Matriarch I think Liara learned some social skills in the first 50 years of her life. In ME1 she adjusts remarkable quickly, is not afraid to speak her mind, even though Shepard is the only one who actually trusts her. I think this trust is also a key point as to why Liara develops feelings for Shepard.
When Liara's 'new' life was destroyed along with Shepard and the normandy, Liara was alone once again. Being approached by cerberus to help bring Shepard back to life was, in her opinion, the least she could do. After this mission had succeded and Feron was captured, she felt obliged to try and avenge/rescue him. To do that, she needed to go into the information broker business. She soon learned the only way to succeed at this was to become more ruthless so as to not be stepped on by all the 'big guys' in the information broker business.
So yes, while it seems the gap between ME1 Liara and ME2 Liara couldn't be bigger, I feel everything she did in ME2 was out of loyalty/love for Shepard and later loyalty to Feron and actually does fit her character quite well. Sorry for the big chunk of text. I could write about Liara all day it seems:pinched:
Yes I think many of us can write about Liara all day

I see where you are coming from, but what I meant was if the players who played ME1 and didn't romance Liara, didn't read the comic, and didn't see her till Illium would be surprised at her sudden change and a cold shoulder.
As far as I remember, Liara doesn't tell you that she gave you to Cerberus untill you bring her the data on the SB and start that mission. So I think that's why people were so confused about her reaction.
Assuming that Aethita is Liara's "father" we know Liara has so krogan traits in her, meaning that her actions and ruthlessness is not that farfetched, what I meant is the more we learn about her, the more we understand and relate to her, but the hate comes from people who have no idea or a vague idea of what her character went through, as well as not really knowing her backstory.
Honetly I find it rather hard to understand people calling Liara shalow or boring, the character has more depth then most other characters, and is, in my oppinion more devoted to Shepard then anyone else. I mean seriously... boring? Jacob is boring, Liara is awesum

She also has a great voice actoress, and I think she contributed greatly to her Character, you can even hear it in her interview.
Sorry about another wall of text <_<
