finished product doesnt surprise me much but that face just isnt working for me. i actually think the rest of the statue is just fine, but they could do something else w/ the face. tempted to vote about it on the fb page, just liked a few comments and closed the page instead
Of this issues with the statue itself, I agree with you completely. The face is just wrong. I don't just mean in terms of its pedo vibe either. Not to beat a dead horse, but like was posted on the various threads pertaining to the statue, the proportions are wrong as well, the eyes are to large, the head is angled in an anatomically ackward position, the forehead is much to large etc.
As for the body though, while its not terrible, it still is oversexed. I still can't get over the fans who are oggling over the gigantic sized breasts on that thing... I mean don't get me wrong, that artist is god damn talented, he must be some type of sevant in physics to be able to get that statue from tipping over.
As for the concept art, while I personally am indifferent to the anime style, Yama****a's concept art did not look as oversexed. TIn addition it at least had some semblance to Liara and was anatomically accurate (not in terms of the placing Miranda's a** on Liara's chest but in terms of a normal forehead etc.)
I guess what is most wrong with the statue is as was said in BSN et passim, is it simply doesn't reflect Liara's character. While she is certainly attractive, she never flaunts that fact to her advantage. I dunno why the single bishoujo character they decided to do for the series is the one that really does not refelct that style... I mean I actually anderstand why they did it. WHile the Asari are a compelling highly advanced species which many of the great qualities of ancient greece at its golden era... they are still to some large degree sex symbols. Due to this, i think of all the species which would most naturally fit the bijshoujo style, certaintly it would be the asari. Because Liara has such a loyal fanbase and due to the aformentioned sex appeal I guess Bioware figured why not kill 2 birds with one stone-- satisfy the Liara fans with a statue and create a bishoujo statue.
My only confusion is of all the styles they could have picked why Bishoujo? As a series Mass effect is very mature and relies on scientific theories and ideas which actually have a basis in the real world. Scientists nowadays are looking for dark energy, that quantum entanglement idea actually exists to some degree, the levorotatory vs dextrorotatory chirality of the DNA what great... I know i smiled when i read the feedback mechanism foound within krogan biology. I guess my point is that for a very mature, scientific series it would seem realism would've been the way to go, not sexy anime. Kotobiyuka is excellent at making realistic models too, from the many coments I have read, i think one of those would have generated a better response.
In summary this statue simply does not capture the flavor of either who Liara is, or indeed of the mass effect series itself.
What are your guys opinions on this?
Edit: apparently the illustrator who created the concept art for the stature has a naugthy word in his name so that part was censored out by the forums naughty word
