My main criticism about Liara being important to the plot, or being important, is how it's always handled. I sometimes think it doesn't help her as a character. It's just there to help setup a plot point, and then dropped completely.
There isn't much talk between you and her about her mother. She already knows she's the bad guy, and takes your side on things. And then, after her mother's death, she's over it.
There isn't much talk about her life as a prothean expert beyond, "I'm an expert and love it". She tells you her theory, and then points you in the right direction. It's good for moving the plot forward, but that's all it's used for. She doesn't go into detail about her love for it, or her life as archaeologist beyond the bare minimum. She simply has the job to serve the plot.
Same with her becoming an information broker. I can justify how she got the job, but the fact of the matter is, she got it because it served the plot. She didn't get it to help develop her character. Everything about her life as an information broker is kept vague. And from what I'm being told, it'll remain that way.
What was used to develop her character is turning her more into a corrupt character. How she was willing to kill 5 possible Shadow Broker agents just to get data to help avenge her friend. Or wanting to kill more agents for their involvement with the Shadow Broker. That she was slowly turning into a bad guy herself, with Shepard warning her about it.
But then LOTSB comes out, and they dropped that aspect almost completely. They did a back pedal on her, and made her more likable or understandable. And it shows.
So that's another aspect that went nowhere, and dropped.
Same goes for her saving your corpse.
As much as some might wish someone else did it, or whatever, the fact of the matter is, it almost amounts to nothing but a short conversation, and never to be brought up again. So again, another aspect that went nowhere.
It's like they create reasons for her to matter to the story, but they don't bother developing it well. Or they barely put any effort to develop it. Or they simply drop it later.
So if in ME3, she loses her Shadow Broker status at the beginning of the game, I'd be disappointed.
