Whether they're playing Femshep because they prefer playing a strong female character, or because "girl on girl is hot" is a different debate.

If I were to be completely honest, I would say--based on my own experiences with the crowd-- the ratio is skewed in favor of the latter group by some degree.

I didn't get that impression from my own experiences at all. Quite a few people I know play Mass Effect, and while all of them like Liara none of them once brought up "woo space lesbians" once ever. I mean one of the guys is a pretty big femshep junkie, and when he mentioned romancing Liara it was more "because she's a great character", and even though he's not exactly the maturest of guys he didn't mention the whole space lesbians thing at all.

Well, then you're quite decerning when it comes to your friends. I've been around the Mass Effect fan sphere for over three years, and I've seen countless fan artist and fan fiction authors come and go. The people I've seen who are in the Liara romance for the "woo space lesbians" factor more than they are the "romancing a character they like with a Shepard who happens to be female" factor seem to outnumber those who are the opposite.

But really; in the grand scheme of things, I just don't really care. I'm just content to play my Shepards and their romances and make my own fan creations. Not for anyone else, but because the way I play it  makes me happy.

Can I not be romancing a character I like with a Shepard who happens to be female and also be doing it for the woo space lesbians? :D

I'm a gay woman. I agree with the point made on the previous page about Femshep/Liara being popular because of the lack of decent portrayal of lesbian relationships in gaming. I speak personally when I say that I find the Femshep/Liara romance is so incredibly refreshing.

It's nice to be able to have your identity represented in a respectful way when it is typically either ignored or used for titilation.

As a straight guy, of course there is a part of fantasm in the Liara/FemShep, but the Liara romance is mainly interesting because she is very different from Shep, no matter how you play her. I never lusted on a FemShep/Ash romance, because that would be too much firepower in the same room. Like Michelle Rodriguez and Angelina Jolie being together.
That is also why I tried Liara before Ash for my MaleShep. I like the "opposites attract" stuff, and Shep will always be different from Liara.

But honest, who cares? At the end of the day, is there really anything wrong with too much of this?

That's totally not game accurate. Those fish are still alive.

I swear there must be some kind of malevolent god after my fish. I'm only surprised that I don't return to find just one very fat fish. And why can't I get someone to feed my fish without having to lead poor Kelly on? I bet Picard never had to feed his own fish!

*cough*

This.

Edit:  Or it's Liara's apartment/SB base.

Liara feeds her fish.

Unless you got Kelly to feed your fish.

Though I honestly keep them alive. Keeps me looking at the picture after every mission.

I was constantly going back to feed my fish. Finish a quest? Feed the fish! Get a quest? Feed the fish! Crew is kidnapped? Feed the fish!

Thing is, Liara can feed her fish because she's a living person and has to sleep occasionally - when she does she can go back to her apartment and feed her fish. Shepard is the player character and has no time to sleep!

You know, I was being silly earlier, the outfit isn't even that similar, but the more I think about it the more it fits:

Kusuha Mizuha, a psychic blue haired (medical) doctor (well eventually, the first Balmar war starts when she's 18 but after the second Balmar war she finally manages to go to college (only about three more wars and five years later). Although in ME1 it's Liara that needs saving whereas in SRW Alpha 1 ... and 2... and 3 it's Bullet that needs saving. Still I really think that that Shepard is actually based on Brooklyn Luckfield. It makes too much sense.

Or am I just saying that because I'm sleep deprived?

To be honest, I think if it wasn't for the guys, who like girl on girl action, we probably wouldn't have gotten the great lesbian romance options in the recent Bioware games, I harbor no illusions in that regard. They are not just showing cheap girl on girl action, that is great.
I am not really sure, if boys are looking for real girl on girl action, that the Liara romance will grant them the pay off, they were hoping for. Its reward lies more in emotional satisfaction rather than pure sexual arousal.

The same could be said for the m/m in DA (And now in me3 I think?) being in large part to the female base, who like slash.

and those pictures are very nice <3

You wanted to say Jade Empire.  ^^ They didn't invent s/s options recently, it was already in their games.
I'm just glad that they don't implement everything from previous games, or we would have had the threesome in ME1.
Nothing against threesomes, but it wasn't done well in JE. More comical then romantic.

Liara dodged that bullet. :D

Oh god I hope the ME1 crew didn't get that close after Shepard died. I'm having a bad deja-vu.

Liara: After you were gone, me, Ash, Kaidan, Tali, and Garrus got together, and started getting to know each other. We talked how much we loved you. And realized how we could continue to love you, by loving each other.

Shepard:

I have only played Dragon Age and Mass Effect, so I can only say with certainty that the Leliana, Liara, Merrill and Isabela romances are great for me. That is why I put the "recently" in there as I didn't know, if my statement could be applied to their games before Mass Effect, which was my first video game with a romantic side story and I didn't even play that until my second playthrough, when my anger over not being able to romance Ashley was gone and I gave Liara a chance.

I like Ash because she probably has one of the most "real" personalities in a Bioware game, but Liara...

...when I sided with her in the LI argument (was a tough decision mind you) I never looked back. Gonna have to get an Ash romance playthrough eventually, but I can't refuse Liara  ... :(

I have the same kind of problem with Tali in ME2. I like her character and I thought that I could do a one playthrough where I'd romance her, but the problem is I can never cheat on Liara and I can't play ME1 without romancing her and I don't want to use any downloaded ME1 single shep either. So I guess I'm stuck with this, but it just feels wrong not to romance Liara or to cheat on her, I can't do that.

If you don't enjoy it, don't do it.
I did the romances in ME2 and ME1, because I feel you can get to know the characters better. Or see a different side of them. Especially in ME2.
I'm looking forward to ME3, where Garrus will finally talk to my Shepard and not want awkward bromance sex.
Or even better, "romance" them and break up before the cabin scene. (I hope no one remembers that in ME3 or I'm going to have a very weird playthrough....)

I know what that's like. I tried several times to not romance Liara and do a no romance or Ash romance playthrough but I never managed to refuse Liara. Eventually I just gave up on trying...

I typically have a one Shep per romance rule, but I recently caught the Liara Renegade Bug in ME1.  There was no way to break it off until the cabin scene and I couldn't turn her away.  This Shep, a full throttle renegade, cheated on her w/ Jacob in ME2.
