Whether they're playing Femshep because they prefer playing a strong female character, or because "girl on girl is hot" is a different debate.
If I were to be completely honest, I would say--based on my own experiences with the crowd-- the ratio is skewed in favor of the latter group by some degree.
I didn't get that impression from my own experiences at all. Quite a few people I know play Mass Effect, and while all of them like Liara none of them once brought up "woo space lesbians" once ever. I mean one of the guys is a pretty big femshep junkie, and when he mentioned romancing Liara it was more "because she's a great character", and even though he's not exactly the maturest of guys he didn't mention the whole space lesbians thing at all.
Well, then you're quite decerning when it comes to your friends. I've been around the Mass Effect fan sphere for over three years, and I've seen countless fan artist and fan fiction authors come and go. The people I've seen who are in the Liara romance for the "woo space lesbians" factor more than they are the "romancing a character they like with a Shepard who happens to be female" factor seem to outnumber those who are the opposite.
But really; in the grand scheme of things, I just don't really care. I'm just content to play my Shepards and their romances and make my own fan creations. Not for anyone else, but because the way I play it makes me happy.
