Right because LOTSB was when my Shep gave her a hug I had no control over.

Had no control? Really? I just watched an entire playthrough to watch the non-romanced, no paragon action version...and I see nothing to back you up. The CLOSEST you get is Shepard putting a hand on Liara's arm at the end...after which point you can skip the hug, and say goodbye and walk away from her as she looks a bit lost.
Oh boy.
Play Illium when Shep talks to Liara for the first time again hun. The laugh was supposed to be a "ha" and yeah that LOTSB bit I KNOW it was sarcasm. You claimed there were no forced hugs. There are. In the Vanilla. Game. That. Is. Not. The. Shep and Liara friendship show that I "knew" was gonna happen and paid for. That I can't avoid if I don't have Zaeed and Kasumi.
The only thing I liked about LOTSB was being able to choose not to hug her but that was overshadowed by the BFF act they were pulling in the banter all game long.
So yes. Ra forbid I didn't want Shep to be forced to hug Liara. Oh noes. Frankly I think a character benefits from having both a friendship, antagonist, and professional path because it shows more sides to the character than "I'm always here for you no matter what!" (and yes I'd love if Garrus and Tali had some teeth clenched teamwork with my racist renedouche, Miranda backstabbed my Shep who didn't gain her loyalty because she placed humanities future over his willingness to take a gamble on fighting with the Reapers, If Jack ditched She
p if he/she didn't give her the data she wanted or took too long to do her loyalty mission, if Grunt challenged a Shep he wasn't loyal too or if Shep actually had to kill him if he/she wasn't able to convince him to accept his/her command.)
That's mostly why I like DAO far more than ME. The characters felt much more nuanced because I saw how they reacted to different characters of mine and it was in a variety of ways instead of the two but mostly identical paragon/renegade versions of "We're friends but help me with X thing." [as much as I like Wrex he could've also benefitted from not auto armshaking Wrex as well that is helped by Shep looking awkward though and then being able to choose a friendly/neutral tone.]
