At first, I liked the idea of being able to romance Liara independently in ME3, but over time my opinion changed. Between players who've been importing and the ability to ostensibly pick Liara as a romance option in whatever Genesis 2.0 mechanic they've come up with, I think Liara's prospects for romance are pretty much covered in ME3, to the point where adding an additional romance arch would be completely unnecessary and at worst, draw resources away from the finale of the imported romance.
Now, what I think might turn out to be interesting is Liara developing a close relationship with another character if she is not romanced by Shepard. This I think would give Liara more strength of character. Because as much as I do love her, I hate the idea that she would have this great, unrequited love for Shepard that she wouldn't be able to move past.
I agree that creating a totally new romance arc for players that are starting Mass Effect at ME3 for the old LIs would detract from
all the imported romances. But if Shepard's relationship with Liara is established from ME1 onward not as an LI as such but with a single Shepard then possibly some different lines of dialogue here and there plus a different final scene could lend some serious depth. jlb524 explained it far better than I can though.
I'm still undecided on the second paragraph because of the timing being so soon after Shep's revival. Although Feron... there's always Feron. I'd like to see her develop some solid friendship though, that applies to all the characters in my eyes.
