Hey guys, I’ve had this story kicking around in my head for a while now, so I thought that I would post it here. I hope you guys like it. Just some background information. This femShep’s name is Sha’ira. Basically, Shepard’s mother met the consort when she was younger and was so impressed by her that she named her daughter after the asari matriarch in the hopes that her daughter would be just as graceful and wise. Long story short…. It didn’t work. Her daughter turned down a scholarship at a prestigious university and joined the Alliance. She didn’t find out about the origin of her name until she met the consort after Eden Prime. When she did, sparks flew between her and her mother when she contacted her about Zalabeta. From that moment on, no one was allowed to refer to her by her first name, only Commander or Shepard. Shortly after receiving her spectre status, Sha’ira and the Normandy embarked from the Citadel to the planet Therum. There the newly instated SPECTRE rescued a frightened young scientist named Liara. As fate would have it, like mother like daughter, Sha’ira soon found herself drawn to the young asari. The two grew so close that Shepard even allowed Liara to start calling her Ra. Now, over two years later, Ra has been arrested for her actions in the Balak system and is awaiting trial in prison. But even here, the Alliance cannot keep the shadows from reaching out to their lover.

The sunset on the uncharted world was beautiful, causing the purple sky to burn with deep hues of red and orange. Crystal clear water rolled gently against the white sand of the beach as the gentle breeze lazily wafted the smell of the ocean inland. Above the water, one could see birds of enormous size gently gliding on the wind. The sound of their calls would periodically punctuate the relative silence of the surrounding environment.
All this beauty was lost to the two lying naked on the beach, the sand gently caressing their bodies. No words were necessary between them, the conversation at a level far beyond words. Green eyes gently gazed into the jet black orbs that lay next to them. Ra and Liara were linked in a way few humans had ever had the pleasure to experience with an asari. The joining was not sexual but instead spiritual, their desire only to exchange words and emotions. With time Ra moved her hand to gently trace the contours of Liara’s face, memorizing every detail of her lover. The two would part ways in the morning, possibly for more than a year. She wanted to make every second count should that be the case. Laying her hand on top of Ra’s, Liara smiled to her human companion. Gently grasping the sentinel’s hand, she brought it to her lips. The calluses, born of years in the field, were rough, scratching her lips. Liara wasn’t bothered by this as the calluses were a sign of her spirit and determination, both of which were aspects of Ra that she loved. Moving in closer to her red haired companion she brought her lips to Shepard’s, silk against velvet.
Suddenly the voice of James Vega rang out across the beach.
“Shepard, are you awake?”
Moving her head back from Liara, who seemed to have frozen in place, she called out to him.
“Yea Vega, what do you want?”
She had tried to keep the annoyance out of her voice, but it must have shown through. Vega softened his tone as he answered her.
“Sorry to interrupt you ma’am, but I have the information on you trial date here.”
Shepard sighed. As much as she wanted to blow this off and return to her love, this was more important. That was what she told herself, though she found it hard to believe.
Blinking, Ra sat up on her cot. The inside of the prison cell seemed to waiver and blur as she moved; coming out of memory submersion usually did that to her. She had been reliving the last night the two of them had spent together. It was something that Liara had done for her, implanting the memory into her mind. The process was similar to what Shiala had done in order to implant the cipher, though this method was far less intrusive. She had then shown Shepard how to submerge herself in the implanted memories. The results had amazed Ra, but she had been disappointed upon discovering that the technique wouldn’t work for her normal memories. The one drawback of the technique was that the memory faded each time she submerged herself in it. At the beginning of her incarceration she could feel the individual grains of sand, but now the beach seemed to be a smooth surface. Also, she lived the memory from both her own as well as Liara’s viewpoint; though this aspect was not something she would consider a negative.
Ra motioned for Vega to step into the cell. He nodded and lowered the barrier. Moving towards her, Vega held out a data pad. Shepard took it and briefly glanced over the contents. She smiled when she saw that Liara’s estimation had been dead on. Vega gave her an odd look, a clear sign her was confused about her reaction.
“Something funny Ma’am?”
Shepard looked back at the man, trying to suppress the smile.
“Nothing Vega, just thinking about something someone once said to me.”
She handed the pad back to him and exchanged the required pleasantries before he left her cell. Liara’s letter had arrived two days previously and had contained all the information she had gathered so far concerning Shepard’s upcoming trial. Ra smiled as she reached out and grabbed the data pad on her bed side desk. Rereading the letter, she could hear the voice of her lover speak each word.
“My dearest Ra, I hope this letter finds you well. I have managed to infiltrate one of my agents into the prison guard rotation, so there is no need to worry about our correspondence being discovered.”
Initially, Shepard had been somewhat concerned at the ease with which her lover had manipulated the system to her benefit. After thinking about it though, Ra decided that, as long as Liara behaved herself, she would enjoy the extra comfort while she could. Besides, some of the perks that came with having the Shadow Broker as her lover were just too good to pass up. Letting her gaze fall upon the small drawer in her desk, she resisted the temptation to snack upon the Thessian delicacies contained therein. Returning to the letter, she continued to read.
“Enclosed along with letter you will find the sum of the data that I have gathered to date to aid in your defence. I have sent a copy to Anderson, as well as your mother, so that they can work it into the defence strategy.
My darling I know that you have forgiven me, but I still feel the guilt of allowing the damning information, that allowed them to place you in prison, to be obtained by the Batarians in the first place. I should have found a way to stop it. Though it is little comfort to you now, I have traced the source of the information leak to Cerberus. It seems our mutual friend wanted you in a place where he could watch over, and possibly eliminate you. It matters little now, as the evidence that I have gathered should help keep you close to the Alliance. When the time comes, you will be close enough to rally the Alliance command to your cause. I doubt it will be difficult, as Anderson has already made a great deal of headway in turning them to your view.
I miss the nights we spent together, the memory of that last night on the beach still plays fresh in my mind. It takes all my restraint to hold myself from having you transferred to a remote Alliance facility where I could easily remove you from their ‘care’. Never before have I been this tempted to abuse this power you helped me gain, and I can see why you were worried. Sometimes my selfish desires drive me to such distraction that I would be all but useless without Ferron to aid me. But I believe in you, and I believe that you are the only one that can save us. So I will put aside these longings, if only for a short time, and look forward to the day when I can be reunited with my bondmate.
I won’t be able to contact you for the next little while. Recently, new information came to my attention about the Protheans. It seems that there are rumors about a new site that was built just after the invasion by the Reapers. If so, it could provide us with valuable information on how to defeat them. I plan on making this a top priority, and once I have new information you will be the first to know.
Be well my love and remember that when you need me the most, I will always be in the darkest corner of the room.”
Setting the data pad down again, Ra allowed her head to fall back on the pillow. Liara might not know it now, but she would soon find out just how much that letter meant to her; how much strength the words contained within had given her to fight the loneliness and doubt that clawed at her. Ra knew she had a guardian angel watching over her, just as she had watched over Liara when the asari had needed it the most.
Closing her eyes, she began to submerge herself in another memory. This one she had been saving, holding back until the time seemed right. Now that the day of her trial had been confirmed, she figured it was as good a time as any. Opening her eyes again, she found she was restrained in some sort of blue field. It took her a moment longer, but she realized that she was in the Prothean ruins on Therum. Examining the room further she saw that there was an entire legion of geth in the large cavern. The gathered machines seemed to be taking orders from the Krogan Battlemaster that she had fought after they had rescued Liara from the security bubble. As time passed, Shepard began to notice several discrepancies from her own memories of the actual event. For one, there had been far few geth during the actual rescue. For another, Liara had been wearing her work clothing. Though Ra couldn’t move her head through its full range, Ra was almost certain that the revealing outfit that she was wearing, which was a perverted mockery of field attire, was not a part of Liara’s wardrobe at the time. Suddenly, Ra clued into what was going on. Liara had used her imagination to modify her memory of the events before implanting it. A wicked grin spread across Ra’s face as a sudden certainty of who the knight in shining Predator M armor would be.
“Kinky….”
Composing herself, Ra began to get into the roll as she called out in a piteous voice.
“Oh! Who ever will save me from these evil geth?”
As if on cue, she heard the metal door to the cavern open.
