Those two Valentines day things are scary as hell.

edit: the second one is possibly only scary after seeing the first one

Ha, love this

Good discussions too.

I'll detail my canon playthrough, though it was long ago, as I only brushed over it with PMC a few pages back.

One thing I picked up on Liara is she knew herself pretty well for her Asari age. She was very confident in her abilities, even if her own people wouldn't take her seriously. She stated her awkwardness was directly attributed to being around 'humans' for the first time; not necessarily around all other species, and that humans, from what she had heard/read, were violent bullies. The fact that she was a loner could be misinterpreted as being an isolationist I guess.

I went into the rescue and subsequent conversations with her with suspicion. To me, at the time, she was potentially a Trojan Horse. A sleeper agent. I didn't trust her, and even though there were some genuine aspects to her behavior, at the same time it felt like she was playing Shepard with that innocence; for different reasons than I suspected, of course. She dug into Sheps past, initiated the romance; and seemed to try manipulating Shep with her exaggerated hesitations and charming nerdiness. All that did for my Shep was enhance her doubt. My FemShep was also not a lesbian. (Being 100% spoiler free, I didn't even know a human/alien LI was possible at the time). I was fully intending on romancing Kaidin and didn't even know Liara was an option. I was even more convinced by this time that she was working for Saren. That is, until she killed Benezia... Yes, in my first playthrough, Liara got the last blow in. I may have been a party to it, but I did what I could after the fight to try and save her. I thought Liara's behavior after was just an Asari dealing with death the way they do - remembering the (good) time they had together. I still tried to push Sheps 'human' interpretation on to her with the top right dialog: "You don't feel bad?"

I was nicer to her after all this, and as I mentioned before; after getting to the end of her dialog I caved, reloaded and romanced her. It was, unexpected to say the least given I wanted to show her to the airlock at least once. Boy did she stand her ground when I called her obsessed though.

As for who holds the power or is dominant in the relationship? That's personal player perspective. I see quite a bit of give and take through ME1 and 2, but Liara states she does not want to be comforted more than once. She admits her reliance on Shep bothers her, but I see it as a struggle against her own independence. Up to the ME1 'rescue' she'd never needed to rely on anyone but herself. This was new to her and she simply didn't know how to deal with needing someone for anything - let alone wanting to need them. It happens again with Feron, even though the nature of the relationship is different. Both times she goes to extremes to pay back Shep and Feron for being there for her.

Liara definitely shows vulnerability during the relationship, while it's more less left to the player whether their Shepard will be vulnerable too - if not, then Shepard will seem more dominant.

Though in ME1 Liara does tend to be the pursuer - the one who consistently makes the first move. Which is traditionally seen as the more dominant "male" role.

Eh I would say she just indicated interest. But every single female LI in the ME games indicates their interest first. Its a bit weird that Shep gets no chance to show his attraction first.

Liara loves the asari rituals, loves explaining how they started and what they mean. And if a union was agreed upon, she would never agree to a human "wedding"

I never seen it like that, I don't think she would be against incorporating certain elements of human marriage into their cermony and let it be a mixture.

Ah, no. She states quite clearly that she's awkward in general because she spends most of her time alone on digs. The new-to-humans thing adds a layer, but she's quite explicitly an introvert. This is made clearer by Liara's commentary whenever she's around a lot of people (she's uncomfortable in Chora's Den and Flux, creeped out by Port Hanshan, etc).

In ME2, of course, we're talking about a whole new ball game. She may theoretically still be an introvert, but she's...learned to deal with people in her line of work, shall we say.Posted Image

Uncomfortable and somewhat awkward in general, yes. She is socially challenged in some respects and crowds bother her. I'm the same way, but I'm far from shy or mute. She is simply out of her comfort zone, but she does not shy away from speaking her mind or standing up for herself. She is not an introvert either. She has no problems expressing her feelings or chatting about her culture or her work to Shepard or; save the romantic feelings part, the crew. She's just a loner. There is a big difference. I also think her awkwardness (only evident around Shep) comes from the human 'unknown element' and her feelings for a person; an alien at that, whom she just met; feelings which in her mind should not possibly exist.

Kaidin: "Wow - did that introvert Asari really just say she had some sand in her... and out loud? That was kind of OOC, eh Shep?"

This is just the way I see it. It has nothing at all to do with the way you see it. Personal perspective and our imagination do wonders in creating the ME worlds our Sheps live in. They are not wrong, they are just different. Such is the spice of life.

Yes. 'Folds', likely meaning head folds, but she thought better of saying so to create curiosity in Shep maybe. Who knows. It was pure comic relief.

Playing Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 long before coming to the forum it was really amazing for me to see how others saw the characters and events ... they were so different than how I had perceived them. At first it was weird and then over time I started to appreciate the differences.

Listening to other viewpoints have enriched my gameplaying because there have been little quirks or insights shared by other posters that I've ended up incorporating in some of my playthroughs. For those posters I am really glad that I came here.

I'm here to share how I see the characters and events and in turn really want to hear from others. How players see the characters, the events and what decisions they have made.

What I don't care for is pi55ing matches where MY Liara is the one true Liara. That not only creates a negative place but it discourages others from sharing their ideas. Fear of being ridiculed or looking stupid keeps many a posters silent ... and that is a shame.

Variety is the spice of life and we all shade people and events with our own viewfinders.

And if you disagree with me then sumo Ashley and Liara will take you down!
