Well, there aren't any hard numbers to be found but the codex says that Mass Relays allow the instantaneous journeys for distances that would take centuries at FTL speed; thus it doesn't really matter whether or not Shepard lived because he'll be dead by the time the rescue ships get back to Earth.
Edit: I think rejecting a bit of canon (pretend the crash didn't happen and Normandy was instead fighting Reapers) is preferable to creating an inconsistent universe (nonsensical FTL).
True, but we also know that the reapers went from dark space to the galaxy in ...
Six months. Using "slow" FTL. Face it, FTL in the Mass Effect universe is already nonsensical.
And as for what the codex says, maybe it implies a journey through multiple relays, for all we know.
Aaaand the Normandy may have dropped out of FTL midway through the passage in the relay.
I don't think given what we already know there is no place to headcannon a proper reunion.
Personally, i take the "Shepard survived" ending as an open ending: after that, anything is possible and up to your imagination.
EDIT: just checked the codex on mass relays, it says "years or even decades". The Charon relay leads to Arcturus, which is at a relatively short distance from Sol (check the galaxy map in ME3, i think it's the shortest Mass Relay jump on the whole map). So you can take it that they are at most a few months away from rescue. A long time, but not unthinkable. It's all a matter of personal interpretation really, i don't think BW is going to clear things up regarding this anytime soon.
