Many people who are in relationships also like other people or wouldn't mind being with other people. That doesn't mean they want anything to happen between the three people involved, which is mostly likely what Liara thought. That, or she simply was unaware, due to her admitted complete lack of knowledge on humans, that monogomy is most preferred and that polygomy is frowned upon or disliked by the majority.
Right, but it's humans that have this attitude, not the asari (and Liara by extension). Her personal opinions on the matter have been shaped by asari influences and culture, not by humanity's.
Exactly. She either did not worry that Shepard liked someone else or thought that humanity may share some sort of openness that Asari culture did. However, this doesn't mean she would want to be involved like that; as my example states, many people in relationships like other people, but this does not mean they would want polygamy, so it cannot be concretely said that it'd be accepted. This is due to the fact that it's not explicitly stated that Asari culture approves of polygamy. In fact, it's stated that Asari see romances as something much more spiritual than other races, that "melding" is a very serious thing to them. It's all open to speculation due to the fact that the game only speaks very little of the culture. This is something I hope they do in ME3, go into more detail on the various races, maybe in the codex, so those interested in the workings of alien cultures can read them. It'd be trivial at best, but it would make for some interesting canon.
