A really,
really short fix fic written on break at work:
Liara sat on the edge of the Normandy's gangplank, watching Dr. Chakwas and Tali kitbash one of the medigel dispensers into a dextro-amino converter.
Is this how it all ends? she wondered, a hand probing her abdomen sadly.
I should be grateful. We're alive. It's a beautiful world. This is so obviously his last gift to us. And yet...too young for children. Too old to believe in fairy tales. I wonder if this is how Bakara felt.Somewhere in the bowels of the Normandy, a familiar voice whispered, "Assuming control." He sounded almost amused.
Goddess, now I'm hallucinating.Garrus' yelp of shock convinced her otherwise.
WIth a start of shock, Liara jumped to her feet and ran up the ramp. Dodging around astonished crewmen, she dove into the armory, heading for the elevator -- but what she saw at the armor station stopped her cold. James and Steven could only do the same, dumbfounded.
Shepard's eyes were glowing an even more brilliant blue than before, the -- what had he called those little upturns of his eyes, "epicanthic folds" or something -- crinkling in amusement. His dress uniform had split down the front, medigel and omni-gel alike dripping down the center. "Well. That's going to be a mess," Rock quipped.
The maiden leaped to his side and grasped his hand. His beautiful familiarity wrapped around her soul like a balm on a mortal wound. Tears streamed down her face as he smiled joyously at her. "Goddess. Oh,
goddess. You're real. You're --"
They kissed.
When they came up for air, she thought to ask the obvious question: "How?"
Shepard chuckled and shrugged. "I'm, well, part of the galaxy now. People, computers, machines...Reapers. It was a trick cloning myself, but the Synthesis Wave gave me something to work with. Enough, I guess."
"What about the mass relays, Shepard?" Garrus asked. Liara wasn't surprised he was the first to recover his wits. "Can we --"
"Go home?" Rock grinned and nodded. "It'll take me a few months to get the network back on line." His smile vanished. "Emergency services come first. The Citadel is a mess, and I don't have to tell you what the homeworlds are like."
Liara hugged him fiercely. "My Paragon." She looked out the opening. "Why here?"
"It's the homeworld of Harbinger's people," Shepard explained. "Secret. Defended." He looked fiercely into Liara's eyes. "Safe."
"Then let's keep it that way." Liara held him as they both looked out into their world. "It'd be nice for a place of sanctuary to be real. Wouldn't it?"
Shepard nodded again. "We still have work left to do...but I wouldn't have it any other way."
