I dont consider Shepard nessisarily spaced.

He was inside that room, and had to breath in something...it seems to have had an atmosphere.

And it dident immediately seem to be headed towards Earth...But ya it must have been rough in anycase.

But on the Orb:

Yeah! where is that thing?

Did someone start using it as a bowling ball? Hidden pleasure Orb ability found and someone stole it?

Orb, Liara's picture, and Shepard's N7 helmet are missing.  And the dog tags, but I think those are the same ones Anderson threw at you before leaving Earth.

I like to think Shepard took the picture of Liara with her when she was on Earth.  So, that is where the picture is.  No time to head back to the room to pick it up.  We were under attack after all.

And for those interested in my single femShep's romance with Liara here is the latest vid for it.  I locked the romance in on the Citadel.  And wow, that scene is very different.  Link
