What if Shep is on the Normandy when it crashes and is just in the med bay with Chakwas throwing a fit?
With the level of...shall we say, "abstractness" of the ending, it isn't unreasonable to think that Shep didn't walk out of the Normandy, just for BioWare to provide DLC further down the line that fills in the plotholes that are rather gaping. Then at the conclusion of the DLC provide the extended "paradise" film clip where it's revealed Shep is on the Normandy and his family didn't leave him to die.
Just a rando thought that's been poking at me for a few days, Indoctrination theory or not, I think the ending we were shown was done so to specifically obfuscate and focus on very certain things.
(disclaimer, I'm not in support of the endings as they stand now, however just thinking of ways to make it more tolerable)
