The Maiden, Matron and Matriarch stages are only social position. Why? Look at Matriarch stage -

"Matriarchs become active in their community as sages and councilors, dispensing wisdom from centuries of experience. - codex"

In Mass Effect universe we didn't see asari without Matriarch social position on high position. Matrons and Maiden are only soldiers, dancers, mothers etc. With age they will gain only expierence and social position - look at ancient Greece or Rome.

Go further - if you don't have 18 years, you are only kid with several rights but if you have above 18, you gain full rights. From Ancient to Middle Ages (especially in Arab countries ), girls with13 years old get merried and have children (Also today in some countries). - "nowadays" you can get married if you have above 18 years. The best time to have children is 25 - 30 age of life. These limits do not mean that you can have only children when you have above 18 years because below you are "effectively sterile" (that was pretty funny for me - no offense for you). These restrictions are the only "common law" not a "biological barrier".

Returning to the heart of the matter -

"The Matron stage of life begins around the age of 350, though it can be triggered earlier if the individual melds frequently. This period is marked by a desire to settle in one area and raise children.
"

1. Oh yeah - they meld frequently.
2. Liara mentioned to live somewhere in peace/she doesn't want to be somewhere else - (she wants to be with Shepard). - "cabin" scene.
3. She wants to renew the relationship with Shepard.- first talk.
4. In LotSB she wants to Shepard always returned to her.

"The Maiden stage begins at puberty and is marked by the drive to explore and experience. Most young asari are curious and restless."

5. (On my mind) - if she is maiden, why does she want to be with Shepard? In ME1 or ME2 was mentioned that maiden Asari doesn't become attached to someone - one quick jump to the side and that's all.

In conclusion, I believe that - Liara grew up to Matron stage from Maiden in ME1 to Matron ME2/ME3 and there are no biological barriers to disprove that she can have children.

sry for wall text and for my eng.

The codex clearly states that the change is both "biochemical and physiological" so I don't think that it is all social.  I do agree that Liara's actions are more in line with the matron stage.

@HetmanNG: That's circumstantial at best and adequately explained by "individual differences".

At the end of the day, the writers left it ambiguous for a reason; thus I really doubt that we'd able to come to any kind of definitive conclusion. If you want to believe that they can have kids (right away or after waiting for a 100 years) then I cannot prove you wrong; conversely, if you want to believe that they cannot have kids then I cannot prove you wrong either.

Well, even though "Thanks for stopping by" is a cop out, think of it this way:

Liara's now the Shadow Broker. That's a lot of work/pressure for her. Shepard's the face of humanity trying to save every sentient being in the galaxy. WIth that sort of pressure on both of them, it'd be hard to find any real romantic moment, you know?

And that strained relationship makes their few scenes all the more powerful.

That's how I felt about Shepard & Liara. They both have their focus pulled in other directions as the galaxy is in jeopardy. So they would not have too much time to see each other even being on the Normandy. Of course, outside of the game I do see Shepard coming into Liara's room and taking naps on her bed as she works. Or the two taking a meal together. Liara sometimes sleeping with Shepard. Etc. There are alot of things that happens with the crew in my headcanon not on camera. And Shepard & Liara did have to work through Shepard's hurt feelings about the "no visit" on earth ... make-up sex is always fun though.

moreeman06 - NO!!!! NO BLUE BABIES!!! Liara and EW Shepard do not want them. They just want to be with each other! Move along now.

Kilshrek - If you want blue babies you can have them ... it's fiction anyway so until an asari tells us different or Bioware puts the baby question to rest with a definitive answer (although I think the "asari moving into the next phase earlier" was just a copout for baby-making goofs)  … go for it! I'll back you up!  But in my ME world Liara is a maiden that does not want children or can have them yet. To each his own! OPA!

You are right but "age rule" (350/700) are for me common low.

Asari species is different than human race. Asari can change faster than us -in my opinion (Javik said about asari is like reptile - or something similar. I don't remember exactly because I have played only once in ME3).

@Above posters regarding Liara having kids ~ Interesting discussion ~

@Alex well put yep u nailed that one in the coffin.

Speculation about Liara is fun and keeps this thread alive, or we could just keep pic spamming liara hehe

Don't forget that Shepard died and was resurrected so anything is possible within the Mass Effect bizzaro universe. Shepard doesn't even age ffs lol.

Unless they cryo freeze Shepard for another 100 years, Liara, blue babies etc anything is possible, hell just look at the crazy ending.

Bioware doesn't follow their own lore so whatever works for each player ... red, blue or green ... go with it. Just because Liara is pushing out thirty blue babies in Betty's game (headcanon) does not impact my game (headcanon).

You want them babies? Your Shepard can have em! Posted Image

Just to take the focus away from that babies-nobabies discussion

Anyone else thinks that it is unbelievably cool how people in game refer to Liara as Dr. or Dr. T'Soni. It gives me a fuzzy feeling seeing how she is a well respected scientists and has a reputation on her own instead of being just one of the people fighting with Shepard. I swooned the first time I heard someone saying this.....sigh....the appeal of intelligent women. I tell ya!

And I had to laugh when I read through the Prothean Notes on the Shadow Broker's terminal! Especially the entries before she met Shepard. Thinking back on how she was in ME1 and seeing the same eagerness displayed in her entries just made me turn into a puddle.

I loved the entry where she was told that some relict was from the 3rd not the 4th period blabla...and how embarrassed she was by making such a mistake!

Also...not enough blue in here

I could give it to you but are you on PC?  She's a bit modded (face texture, hair).

I didn't think that the "And happiness." was necessary, it feels seperate without changing the whole quote and I guess everyone gets the point. :)

And then I read the pages from last night and find strong debate on whether or not Liara can have kids.

1. The answer is "Yes, she can." Those stages are about what asari usually desire at a specific age.
Fertility is dependent from the ability to meld, on the other hand its the explanation why ardat yakshi are sterile: They are unable to meld like normal asari do.

2. Liara shows Maiden-like behaviour/thinking in ME1, but in ME3 its both at least 90% Matron-like.

3. The (optional) dialouge in LotSB indicates that she can have kids.

4. A quote: "However, it should be noted that each stage can be started whenever an
asari feels that she has reached the correct level of maturity. "
