Well... sort of. Maybe that's going a little overboard. :D

Believe me nothing is overboard in here, just enjoy the emotions. See this blog I wrote.

I
don't believe so. At 109, she is still technically pre-purberty. While
the codex does say that the Matron stage can be triggered early, I don't
believe it can be triggered at the equivalent of 8 or 9 year old human
girl. perhaps if she was in her mid 200s, that may be the case, but not
at 109.

Liara: So, this is bar tending? Interesting line of work...

I
think trying to map asari physical development to humans' based solely
on their lifespan ratios is a bit fallacious.  By all outward physical
indicators, Liara is fully grown.  "Adulthood" is more of a social
construct, so when Liara says she's barely considered an adult, I
imagine it has more to do with how asari define what it means to be an
adult (socially, mentally, emotionally, financially) than anything
having to do with her physical ability to create life.

zennyrpg wrote...

I'll try my two cents on the
maiden/matron transition. Frequent bonding speeds this transition. Yet
an asari can progress to the next strage when she feels "ready".

My
interpretation is that the transition is driven by hormones, which are
in turn driven by emotions. When an asari finds a partner early in
life, the constant pairings and the emotional state of well being/
snugglyness releases hormones that transition them to the next stage of
life. So I don't think its a "switch" they can flip, just a natural
process they slip into when they find a partner/ or become older. I
can't imagine the transition would take a lifetime, since liara wants to
have shepard's little blue children- i think she would have mentioned
this. For all we know she could already be undergoing this process.

I
do get the feeling asari can choose when to bond for the purpose of
reproduction and that it is clear to the partner (as it would have to be
since they are sharing thoughts/ minds).

Why not though?
Human sexual maturity is generally reached from around 12-15 years old
(and pretty much fully developed by 18-21).

Humans typically
live for, what, 80 years currently? If Asari live for 1000 years, and
Liara is currently 109, then she's pretty close to the 'age' that a
Human would be sexually maturing.  She'd certainly be very young for an
Asari, but everyone knows that already.

These. I always got the impression that Asari are actually "fully developed" biologically after a few decades, maybe up to 100 at the very latest, likely earlier. As was pointed out earlier Morinth is a prime example, with ardat-yakshi only becoming apparent when mature, and her being around 40 when she ran. From there on the whole Maiden/Matron/Matriarch thing are more of a personal thing in which Asari decide they are ready to move to that next stage of their life and consciously undergo further biological changes as appropriate. The ages given aren't like human development ages (as in fixed); they're just the age that Asari typically feel its the "right time" to do so mentally and physically.

Basing all that on the various conversations and stuff in-game. Basically everything you see of Asari given that the Codex entries are actually fairly light on information. Hell, I AM a biologist...human growth and maturity is merely a matter of some complex biochemistry and physiological effects of that, the fact these occur at certain ages is just because thats how human bodies develop and the cascade of chemicals goes. Considering the control Asari have over their own bodies (as a result of their mating method) theres absolutely no way that its unreasonable to theorise that Asari can choose to move on whenever they feel ready once they're fully grown.

This quote supports that:

asari feels that she has reached the correct level of maturity. "

Woooot! It's celebration time on the Liara thread. She's 109 this solar cycle, I'm.... not telling mine...

We really should have been able to celebrate Liara's birthday as well... I mean... she dropped the biggest hint in LOTSB, and Shep blew it.

And in the end she gives Shep a present! Not even a present from Shep for her birthday!

This. Is. An. Outrage!

I'd say that the date of her birthday should be when this thread hits 1000. At least until we hear the official one.

Also welcome aboard,Alcy80!

Seriously? I'm not all that concerned with the genophage - the salerians came up with a solution once, and will no doubt come up with something equally effective if or when it should become necessary again.

That look gets the "I'm so conflicted right now" look.

Do I rush her and press the "magic button"? Do I focus on the mission? By the powers, woman!

edit : THIS is the official song of the ending, and I don't care if anyone says otherwise.

It's a great scene. Liara is breaking down a bit and wonders why the hell they're even trying to fight and Shepard just says 'Liara...'. And she turns around, gets some support from Shepard and a sweet line, and cheers up again.

Really us Liara fans got a treat with Liara's presence ME3 (apart from the ending ofc). It's great that the writers seem to love Liara almost as much as we do.

4. A quote: "However, it should be noted that each stage can be started whenever an

Except I have not been able to find that in any official data or statement made by Bioware or any of the writers that worked/working on ME.

All the official codex has to say is this:

"While each stage of life is marked by strong biological tendencies, individuals do make unexpected life choices. For example, there are Maidens who stay close to home rather than explore, Matrons who would rather work than build a family, and Matriarchs who have no interest in community affairs."

This passage confirms that there are biological stages which Asari, like humans and most other mammalian species, must mature into. The statement by someone saying that the Asari basically "choose' when to start the Matron stage is a little short sighted as that would infer that a 10 year old Asari would be capable of the same, which is highly impropable and even impossible.

We're still discussing this?

I think it was mentioned earlier upthread that Samara's kids matured around 40-60, thus showing their Ardat-Yakshi-ness. It's a safe assumption they start then.

Let's not throw our human lifespan into the mix and extrapolate from there. We know next to nothing of asari physiology, remember.

A long-lived race is one thing, maturing at the same rate(100 years vs 1000 years, just divide by 10?) we would expect a human to is another.

Ambiguous writing is ambiguous writing. *shrug*

Biological tendencies are just to do with the chemicals being released. How they are released (whether time or by choice) isn't addressed.

You know, if you don't care to participate other than to show your disdain for the subject, then you can just ignore it.

Back on subject though...
Even though an Ardat Yakshi is identified at 40-60, that does not mean they are capable of reproduction (edit: in fact they specifically are not able to reproduce because of the condition, but there's no indication that any Asari can reproduce that early anyway), only able to meld and destroy the others nervous system. I am led to believe that Asari can start melding (but only melding) at that age range.
Nothing has been hinted at in the games or codex that any Asari is able to "reproduce" at a "really" young age. The average is 350 years old at when they enter the Matron stage, my educated guestimate puts the youngest Matrons at a likely 250-300 years old, far older (more than 2x) than Liara is at the end of ME3.

A little love goes a long way. Just look at the Liara hand holding moment. Small gesture, inifinite d'awww.

I may feel brave enough for a little ME 3 MP right now... Or is that a betrayal of my feelings of betrayal at the ending? I'm confused.

After playing through ME3 again, and getting depressed at the end of course, I had a thought. When Liara says something like "to find some place far away, so you could live the rest of your life in peace", it got me thinking: where would my Shep and Liara retire to?

Thessia? Earth? ...the bedroom?

Discuss.
