But I'm still alive.

And that's what's important, dude

You can't give in to pessimism or any kind of despair - ultimately, there's no point in doing so

I didn't see the ending as any kind of desperate 'giving up' by Shepard, but almost the opposite - it's shown in the scene between Anderson's death and Shepard's meeting the Catalyst, no? The way she (he) is almost resolved to watching the Earth, under the impression that it's over, only to be told it's not worked; there's that little moment of desparation when she's (he's) crawling to the panel, looking for a way out. An end to the war is chosen cause it has to be ended, and whomever the love interest is is amongst the last things their thinking of as it's brought to an end, showing it wasn't really for nothing, but for what, as kinda established throughout the trilogy and emphasised in 3, is everything to them

I found the end brilliant for these reasons; I'm not completely stoked on the ending alone, if you observe it in monochrome, out of context, but what it actually is - this miraculous sacrifice to finally, after everything; after those three (or our own 5) years, to end the fighting. And I figured that those last images going through Shepard's were their own reasons for finishing it

So nah, dude - it wasn't for nothing, and nothing was thrown away.

And as for my ending, Shepard lived, so it's not all over, and those particular relationships that touched people aren't gone - like if they ended Mass Effect 1 with the destruction of the Normandy from 2, before the Cerberous intervention

So... no, the Reaper's never won, 'cause Shepard kept fighting, and Shepard finished the war in order to save what she (he) was fighting for, whomever that may be, and whatever that ideal was

Life's good, dude, and it's good you feel ths way about it - if something can cause you such sadness, something similar can do the opposite, no?

Edit: Or, you know, whatever...

Ah, just played through the Aethyta bit with Liara on the citadel.
I feel alittle bit sorry for Shepard when she goes to tell Liara about Aethya.

S: She's your father..
L: I know..
S: I never get to suprise you with anything..*disappointed face*

Feels like an ongoing thing in their relationship. One downside of being with the shadowbroker I guess..

I liked that scene, it was kind of cute. ^_^
S: Liara..
L: Oh fine!

Her "Oh fine!" made me laugh so hard! I loved it and I really love what Sylvia did with Liara as a whole.

*Shepard approaches Liara with her hands behind her back*

Shepard: "I got you something, Liara."

Liara: *matter-of-factly* "A dozen long stemmed red roses.*

Shepard: *frowns and reveals the roses hidden behind her back* "Aw, how did you know?"

Liara: "The local florist is one of my agents."

I love that scene. The normally calm, serene Asari losing her composure. Shows just how much strength is hidden inside.

I fear the path of this conversation may not be entirely healthy for everyone else... But I'm pretty damn sure I know what you mean. :P

Y'know, counting all the actual time Shep and Liara spent together, doesn't it seem like they really only had something like 6 months? 2 years dead, 3 months chasing Saren, 3 months after the Collectors, then 6 months on Earth with no contact with Liara.

How any person can stand that much time apart, I will not fully understand. I know there's important stuff, but there's also important people. Blue, people.

I think the only way for Shepard to surprise her is something like:

*Shepard approaches Liara with her hands behind her back*

Shepard: "I got you something, Liara."

Liara: *matter-of-factly* "A dozen long stemmed red roses.*

Shepard: "Wrong, a mass lowering field." *fires a pull at Liara and catches her in midair*

Liara: *laughing* "So wheres the roses?"

Shepard: "In my cabin. You want to come and see?"

Liara: "Well I never could resist beautiful things..."

Liara doesn't say it first but says it back to Shepard.

What? Why?

This works on the assumption that Shepard has known Liara for the 3 years, and has finally sorted himself/herself out. And, knowing that you may die tomorrow can really help focus the mind.

Because I think it would've been nice if they kept Liara's romance exclusive to returning players. That's what they did in LotSB, and I felt that set a precedent. Then they go and reverse that decision by opening up her romance to new players in ME3. It's not a big deal, but... it's not like us loyal players got much in the form of exclusives. Romances with ME1 characters would've been a big one.

Thanks. I might well do that at some point actually. I've not written anything in a while (love writing fan stories) and at the very least I need to write up myself a headcanon ending.

I've been considering writing some stuff to go in-between what happens in the games as well actually. I'm one of those who subscribes to the whole "more happens than we see" philosophy so could be interesting.

Of course if I do that I'll post a link up here. ;)
