When will this fic occur in the timeline?

So I'm curious. Was it ever established how much direct assistance the Asari got from the hidden beacon? I wasn't really thrilled with the idea that the Asari had fullfledge access to a prothean VI and all it's information, it just seemed like another source of plotholes to me. But I don't remember each and every bit about it..
Personally it feels abit 'meh' if that's the whole reason the Asari won the "space race"..so to speak.
It's not like the beacon was common knowledge either, but it felt abit iffy :l

~30ish years after ME3.  With the explanation for the Reaper defeat fully hand-waved away, of course.  StarChild...  feh...

It seemed kind of vague to me.  It just implied that they got assistance but we don't know where and how much.

I don't think everything they accomplished could be attributed to the beacon, though.

What StarChild?

After ME3, I guess other asari would look up to Liara for her role in defeating the Reapers.  I don't think they'd feel warmly about her given she's a bit aloof and is known to have shady connections (and the whole Benezia thing).  So, I'd think they'd respect her as a great hero to their people but as they don't really know her they wouldn't love her, if that makes sense.

Not really, it's open to debate whether their entire society is based on it or if they were very good at using the info it gave them. It was pretty much the most closely guarded state secret in existence so it must have been at least incredibly valuable to the Asari.

The Asari aren't really military juggernauts and they don't seem way more advanced than everyone else, really the only thing they have that puts them over everyone else is their economy which is massive. Though I don't know how much a superweapon VI would help in that department . .  . I'm guessing more than none less than a lot?

It's possible that simply being asari - meaning taking things very slowly, given their long lifespans - put a throttle on how much they took from the VI.  As others have said, this was one of the most closely guarded secrets in asari government, so I imagine only a handful of matriarchs ever knew of its existence.  And matriarchs aren't known for their swift, decisive actions.

From what I gathered, the Asari were a lot more advanced than all the other races at the time the Protheans were wiped out. The humans still lived in caves and had difficulty surviving. The Asari were already advanced enough for the Protheans to see their potential. Really I just think the Asari advanced faster after they discovered the beacon. Liara says several goddesses (which were later revealed to be protheans) taught her people basic life skills. Most likely in the hope that the Asari would be ready for the Reapers in 50.000 years.

Current day (ME 1 timeline) there's nothing to indicate the Asari received help from the Protheans. Humans, Turians, Salarians, all are equally advanced when it comes to technology. Culturally though, the Asari are one step above all the other races.

I agree. I don't get it either. If they were holding it back to remain more advanced, why didn't they know about the Reapers? If the beacon was making them more advanced, they had to have read it. Unless they couldn't figure it out, and decided to put it in a church instead of a lab?

Have to remember... Shep has the Cipher... the Asari don't. They would be limited by what they could learn where as Shep could actually understand and see everything the Beacon provided.
Remember what EDI tells Liara after Thessia.. withholding Prothean tech was the biggest crime ever according to Council law. Makes you wonder how many Asari knew about the Beacon. Benezia did for sure... and the Asari Councilor... but how many others?

The pureblood thing to me is silly. Even in ME3 you get a message to deliver to an Asari's bondmate... who happens to be another Asari. I don't think it is as great a stigma as it is played out to be.

As someone already said... parents and children will always fight over certain things. I believe Benezia was angry that Liara chose the path she did... but proud of her immensely that she stuck to her guns. I also think she would have preferred Liara chose something else because being a Prothean expert... someday Liara was bound to find out about the beacon. At least that is what I think.

I guess this is just another massive plothole. Vendetta, the Prothean VI, was modeled after the Crucible overseer and it knows about the Reapers, the Crucible and the Catalyst. So why did it not tell the Asari about all of this if the Protheans thought the Asari to be the most promising species to stop the Reapers. It just doesn't make any sense.

Edit: I totally forgot about the Cipher.

So, I've written down my headcanon ending because... well, I wanted to:

Part 1:
http://social.biowar...39/blog/212210/

Part 2:
http://social.biowar...39/blog/212211/

It's not very fancy or anything, but I felt like sharing it. Haven't written any fan fiction before so it might be a bit so-so, I don't know. Starts right after Anderson's death. My Shep is with Liara, of course. Oh, and there's supposed to be a Part 3 too.

But looking at stuff like the picture above, can't really blame you. I'd be a lot more active in here over the past few days, if I didn't have brief brain farts where I couldn't figure out how to contribute to the thread other than pictures. :P

Funnily enough that EXACT IMAGE is pretty much the reason for my activity.

That look just melts my heart every time I see it.

Where does this scene come from? :o I'm not remembering.. (shame on me)

Yeah on one side I'm inclined to simply say 'the Cipher means no one but Shepard and possibly Shiala (and Javik of course) could understand what the Prothean VI said, showing them only vague images like Shepard's vision. At that rate it would take a heck of a long time for them to understand even the simplest of visions.

One thing that bothers me though: If the VI really requires the Cipher to understand, how did TIM figure out the catalyst was the citadel? He doesn't have the Cipher...

I'm sure if you asked the writers they'd say it came from that Reaper thing that zapped him and made his eyes look like Saren's.

Not only that, but your other characters didn't need a Cipher to understand what it was saying. Same with Vigil.

Depends on the writer. If said writer was responsible for the ending, the response would most likely be: "Cipher...?"

Not only that, but your other characters didn't need a Cipher to understand what it was saying. Same with Vigil.

Hmm that's true. Vigil said it monitored your communication and translated his message so we could understand... It's likely the VI on Thessia could do the same. Wouldn't be much point to it if you left a VI for another species to use, only they could never understand it:pinched:
