They would never do that anyway. BW always has male/female character, you can customize.
It's just that I feel like Liara could easily fill the role of a new protagonist. Which is outstanding, when you think back to ME1. She was cute and everything, but her journey and change was simply amazing.

DA:O had different origins (duh), DA2 had humans only - it would not be a huge stretch to make the ME3+ protagonist fixed sex for better storytelling (or just "button awesome") I guess

That would be just awful in my opinion. Seeing Liara with no Shep around would not sit well with me... 

Then again, doesn't really matter either way as long as the ending is what it is.

But, I would go even further. As the SB, she could become more then just the LI and equal partner.
She could become a new main protagonist.

Something not many characters have accomplished!

Like I said awhile ago. Liara is easily Grace Nakamura from the Gabriel Knight Series.
She was a little shy support character in the first game and became even more important than the main protagonist in the third game.

That's at least how I feel about her. Liara and the smurfs? I would buy that game... =D

Yeah, I could definitely see that work and certainly wouldn't complain about more Liara.
But I feel Bioware won't go that way, not only because of the ending that never happend

No major character from the current ME trilogy should carry over into any future games. They could be mentioned in passing, but really, I don't want to see them, because there won't be Shep.

Depends on personal taste. I think the only real difference is in the reunion dialogue.
Before the SM Liara talks about Shepard going after the collectors, after the mission it's about the reapers and the outcome of the SM.

The gameplay affecting stuff like weapon upgrades, etc. is more usefull before the SM of course ...

i play LotSB before  the suicide mission, i play any time in the middle of the game.

I personly prefer post-suicide mission my self, since I prefer Liara talknig about the Reaper war after saying how I stormed the Collector base and no one died
