Kelly is a sweetheart    =)    I'll probably make one FemShep for her at some point, but even when I haven't romanced her she has always been important. And I like to talk about the latest mission with her. It gives a sense of inclusion, it isn't just FemShep running around solo in the ship but the people around her are also connected to the missions and such.

Ohh... concerning hugs and dinners. I did not get a dinner-invite after the IFF, even if I would have liked one very much so I guess that the order in which missions are done plays some part in it. I have to say getting that friendly dinner with Kelly is more difficult than I thought. I couldn't do it when I recruited Samara so I guess that when I chose the wrong answer when recruiting Thane I had my chance and lost it. Oh well... there's always the next FemShep. I'm making a extra save before talking to Kelly when I recruit Thane or Samare. I will have that dinner   =)

AFAIK, the only dialogue Kelly has after the IFF mission is concerning Legion. The dinner is after Samara/Thane/Collector Ship, and the hug is after the Collector Ship, tied into the line where she says she wants to hug EDI for bringing Shep back to her.

It may not be that you missed the opportunity; you may not have had enough relationship points from not flirting with her enough. And if you were trying for a friendship over a romance, that could be why. I imagine it's much harder to get the dinner when you're doing a strictly friendly run.

Yes, that'd be very appreciated for subsequent playthroughs. 

I'm about to do the Suicide Mission on this run so it won't be long before I find out if things will work or not.

It's no problem. I've gotten the dinner that way without any hiccups later. The email arrived as expected after the Suicide Mission. I assume the alternate dinner is just there so that if you recruit Samara before having flirted enough (which will have Kelly saying something like "you're so sweet" rather than asking for a dinner invite), or don't recruit her at all, you can still complete the romance.

Can we expedite how long it takes Kelly to feed the fish though? I like the fish and I get tired of cleaning out the tank.

It takes like 30 seconds to go up to your cabin and feed them, and you're forced to return to the Normandy after every mission anyways...

The soonest Kelly can feed them is right after your first party recruit following Horizon.

But then I've to sit through loadscreens. The only good thing other than fish in the Captain's Cabin is Armor customization.

No, but she's just emerged from a day-long (possibly longer) private freakout session over the whole "being dead" thing at the beginning of the game after getting the SR-2, and spent a lot of that time worrying about, and occasionally crying about her separation from, Liara. She's collected herself by the time she emerges from her cabin, but is definitely in no mood to flirt with anyone, not while she's A. actually in love with someone else, and B. very worried about it.

If it helps you can wait pretty much until the end of the game to start flirting. Kelly's recruitment converations que up and you only have to ride the elevator up and down to advance to the next one. The plot specific conversations are put at the front of the que so if there is a cut off point it would be the disabled reaper. Before that you would have to start.
