In the ME2 section of the forum Shiala's fan thread is there.  If you like, you can read it and I'm sure a number of things mentioned in that thread have been mentioned here earlier.  But I doubt you'll read any bit of it anyway judging by your response.

As minor characters go, Shiala is by far the most primed for a larger role than she has.  That cannot be denied as much as people try.  Her brief few minutes in-game calls to question Liara's claim of being a Prothean expert.  That also cannot be denied.  Liara's worth is only in that she's been to various Prothean sites to name Ilos as the locatoin of the Conduit, and that's because it wasn't made evident if Shiala knew about Ilos or not after being captive of the Thorian.  If Shiala knew of Ilos then Liara's position is completely undermined.  She's not as capable as Shiala in combat.  That's evident in her own statements about her brief period of training.  So there's really not a whole lot to justify Liara's position other than what was written in-game.

Now with Shiala being affected by Thorian spores to the point that her pigment has changed and her biotics aren't what they used to be there's still more potential for her to embody a bigger role in the series.  She might serve as the rebirth of an old enemy or a potential aid in taking on the Reapers as it appears clearly evident that she is of sound mind (she isn't under Thorian control and has been cured of Reaper indoctrination).  And again, these ideas are presented to us in another encounter that only lasts a few minutes.

So the "obsession", as you say, with Shiala is justified.  There's just way too much potential and we would like to see that realized.

You have just put all of my feelings into a very eloquent argument lol.  I personally don't understand peoples' obsession with the clingy, creepy, 106 year old virgin. I just find Liara too passive to be attractive I suppose.Shiala forever <3

My own answer , Shiala is the Boba Fett of the mass effect universe .
She has a cool voice and right dialogues or answers , the right background , massive potential and powers.
And she hinted she and shepard could have a relationship :o

So you can´t blaim people for wanting her .

Same way you ask people what they like about Boba Fett in Star Wars , they just like him .

And as for being a 'minor character' I definitely have to disagree with you on that.  She was an apprentice to one of the main antagonist in the first game.  She is the only living person besides shepard who has the cypher.  We know Liara didn't have it since she couldn't understand the prothean distress signal in the security area on illos.  She is the only Asari Commando that we know of, so she may help to rally the Asari behind Shep in ME3.  She is the only person to EVER come back from indoctrination. Ever since the Reapers started Reapin' she is the only one to ever recover from its effects thanks to the Thorian, which could be argued as being an organic foil towards the Reapers. She was inside Soveriegn so she has knowlege on the internal mechanisms of the Reapers.

And as for why I like her, its because she is one of the only characters we ever encounter who isn't childish, selfish, or stupid.

As soon as she is free of the Thorian she gives Shep the only means of stopping Saren, and the asks if she could devote her time to helping Zhu's Hope recover in  order to attone, even though none of what happened  was her fault.   If shep is Evil and says no then she just turns around, gets on her knees and lets him execute her.  No one else is the ME series was...well...that hard core.

Even compared to 'important' characters like Garrus and Liara she is far more rational and has far more appealing qualities.  While Garrus should have been on the Citadel helping them to recover and spreading word of the Reapers, instead he has a fit and runs off to Omega to kill random Blue sun mercs cause he doesn't 'fit in' or like the rules.  And I won't even get started on the other main characters.

Basically the entire time we have known her she has devoted herself to others.  First, to Benezia's doomed cause of saving Saren and then to the Colonists of Zhu's hope.  She doesn't complain about wanting revenge on anyone, or having daddy issues,  or feeling inadequate.  aher mind was controlled by a Billion year old Malevolent Machine intellegence, then she was traded, and used as a slave for a giant plant, and she calls the whole experience...disconcerting. Only Shepard has gone through comparable experiences and only he was ever that badass.

AND SHE"S GREEN:bandit:

Becouse sometimes a minor side characters are far too interesting for  " 10 sec NPCs" role?
If You don't like/care about minor NPCs You don't have to be in this topic. Not always main characters have o be a " Star", You know....
Personally I like Shiala very much. To be honest I like many minor characters from BioWare game, and for me it's sign that Developers are able to create really interesting world.
I like Shiala, Thalitha ( and You can see her ONLY if You play a specific origin), Kirrahe, Kahoku, Bailey, Anaya, Dr. Michel...and there's a lot of others I really like..Why I shouldn't talk about them?

Liara is Benezia's daughter, and the Normandy team were hoping to find the location of Benezia from her. Which is why she is more important than Shiala in ME1. Obviously she grows even more important in ME2, but that's another story.

That is all.

Considering the fact that we actually stumble onto Benezia Liara's relative importance drops significantly.

Prior to getting Liara off Therum everyone understands her (Liara's) possible worth.  So yes, she's more important than Shiala initially.  When talking to Liara, however, she makes a statement that runs contrary to what everyone thought about her.  If I remember correctly, LIara's statement is about how long she's been away from her mother so she's not able to give a location.  The fact that she says this leads me to believe that she can't even guess where her mother might go.  So the sole reason she's sought after is rendered null within minutes of acquiring her.  She's just an extra hand whose only real contribution to the story is her knowing that Ilos exists and that the conduit is there after sifting through the jumbled puzzle pieces in Shepard's head.

I wish someone would  build that statement as a monument in front of Bioware's office building!Image IPB

Shiala is imho the most underestimated and - in her character's potential - underused character in the first two parts of Mass Effect.

The Cipher
As many already stated, Shiala is beside Shepard the only one who carries the entire memory of a whole prothean colony inside her mind and as an asari should be - compared to Shepard - much more capable in digesting these mountains of information. Referring to Liara the Shadow Broker was investigating the prothean legacy confident that they hold the key to overcome the reaper threat, so the Cipher could emerge as one of the key wepons against the reapers.

Indoctrination
It was also stated that Shiala is the only one who - ironically thanks to the Thorian- overcame the indoctrination with an intact mind. Considering the fact that several Cerberus members will obviously indoctrinated in ME3, she could become a bastion against the reapers influence - even more if you consider that she was appearently somehow changed through her experience with the Thorian (instable biotics, intensive dreams, etc.)

The Thorian
A much darker option could be that the Thorian used Shiala to be his legacy and the reason for her sickness or problems is some sort of mutation process, which could result in an asari with thorian mind control abilities empowerd by the asari heritage. Let's hope this leaves her personality unchanged!Image IPB

Cerberus
Regardless wether because of the Cipher or her Thorian experience or her possible threat potential against the reapers, the Illusive Man could let Cerberus hunt her down, if this group's  intelligence reports could reveal her danger potential for his and the reaper's plans. This could be some plot introduction for Shiala in ME3: Caught by Cerberus for testing and interrogating and saved by her knight in white armor: Shepard. Mordin and Dr. Chakwas then could work on a cure for her problems.

Personality
Shiala has a true paragon personalty: In ME1 she was ready to die for actions she was not responsible for, she did not argue nor did she beg for her mercy. She gave up her former life only to help colonists who didn't even belong to her own species, in ME2 she suffered but did continue to help these people she feels responsible for.

Dead Shiala
And last but not least: there might be chance to have Shiala in ME3 even if any Commander Shepard was cruel enough to shoot an unarmed and surrendering being in the head: One of the Thorian's clones could have survived and being independent now trying to find a place for her in this galaxy. Of course it could be that this Shiala could happen to be less kind to her "murderer" and cooperation could become one hell of a mission...Image IPB

I will add my voice to the chorus of admirers of Shiala and I also would like to see her return.
As I think about it, a number of months have elapsed in the M.E. universe since Shiala is last seen on Illium -enough time perhaps for Exogeni to find a cure for her condition - or for new developments to take place.

If Shiala does recover her health, she may ( as StarMarine suggests ) - become VERY IMPORTANT,  by becoming a possible vector for a cure to Indoctrination.

At first, I wanted to imagine her on the front lines as a Commando again, but her having experienced DOUBLE INDOCTRINATION  - ( Double the Pain - Double the Agony ! ) - makes her invaluable elsewhere.   I know not whether she will be wielding a new power,  ( that would be cool ! ) - or whether there is something in her genes now that can be used as a vaccine against indoctrinating nanites - but it's all good !

( writers & directors - forgive our endless speculations ! )
:innocent:

StarMarine, your fanfiction outline is cool by the way - so hope you enjoy this scene I imagined...

The Scene:   Shepard and Squad members have assaulted a Cerberus location, based on intelligence recovered from a Cerberus heavy squad on on Sur'Kesh.  After a long and perilous assault on this fortified base ( with many surprises ) the team is making their way through the central locations - data cores, research labs, and executive offices.  The Team finds more data on Cerberus research, some weapons, and a possible clue to the Illusive Man's location ( ! ).  As they pass through the last lab, Legion calls out....

Legion:   " Shepard-Commander !  I have found someone....  ! "

( The Commander and Garrus come over to find.... Shiala in a stasis tube....ready for shipping.....somewhere ! )

Legion and Garrus quickly release the stasis field, and are able to revive Shiala in a few minutes while Shepard watches for any approaching enemies.....

Garrus:   "Shepard - she's waking up ! "    ( Shepard and Garrus quickly trade places guarding the doorway...)

Shepard:   "Shiala, can you hear me ?"

( Shiala opens her eyes.....and then stares in amazement at Shepard....)

Shiala:   "Shepard-- you - You're  HERE !   I....didn't.....think ANYONE would be able to help me..."

Shepard:  "Shiala - I want to know what happened to you - but we'd better talk later - we've got to get ourselves out of this base first !  Can you move ? "

Shiala:  "I'm fine - anyone have a spare weapon ? "  ( Shepard hands over pistol )   " Thanks Commander."

Garrus:   "Another squad's coming !    Get Ready !"

Shiala:   "Shepard - can your team try to stun these attackers - or disable them ?"

Shepard:  " If we can get them to bunch up, - I'll hit them with a Singularity - what do you have in mind ?

Shiala:   " I want to set them free..."

( The squad is able to pull off the manuver, two Cerberus agents are killed -but five are pulled into a Singularity vortex.....as they are float helplessly... Shiala walks calmly towards the agents...

Shiala:    " You act against your own wills - enslaved to Another -
(Shiala concentrates and biotic power flares up around her and the Agents... )
In this Moment - We Are ONE.... NOW FREE YOURSELVES !!!
( The Cerberus agents simultaneously scream... ) Your chains are Broken !  You Are Free ! "
( ...and fall thudding to the floor - as the Singularity winks out. )

( The team quickly disarms the surviving agents as a precaution.... and covers them as Shiala helps the closest one to her feet. )

Wow, I'm speechless...:o

Thanks for elaborating my little idea into this fantastic scene - which gave me goosebumps btw.:D Hopefully one of the Biowarian creatives stumbles over this thread and realizes how much potential Shiala has to offer - not only as a squad member and potential love interest, but as a major plot carrier!
