Says you. I boneless women flopping through the streets and flirting with Marethari were perfect for my comedy/troll Hawke.Abispa wrote...

Yes, it's possible to do things this way, and I'm glad for it. At the same time, I think that the actual implementation has to be improved. Even with the tone/intention icons in DA2, there were still quite a few times when my Hawke didn't say the kind of thing I'd meant her to say.
I don't know how Bioware can ever come up with a dialog wheel that accounts for every individual's assumptions on what's going to be said. There were a few times that I chose a "humorous" dialog and got something in horribly bad taste that weren't even remotely clever (joking about the dead women with Emeric or "accusing" Merathari of hitting on you before going into the fade).

And my lesbian Hawke's often, though not always, join Zevran and Isabela for that threesome.
Haha, really? Mine always either object or quietly sulk.
It's not straight if it's an elf!
While a toggle would actually work fine for many people and savvy people like me could learn to check bisexual while still knowing that my charcter is gay you can't get away from issue that there are too many variables to account for without making the toggle screen either useless or a joke for example (I will use DA and ME universe):
Aliens/Other races: A few would argue that this could fall under bestiality, should that be a toggle? /rhetorical question
The Brothel, etc.: Shai'ra, club dancers, nugs, 'female' dwarf. Do we have a humor toggle? What if someone toggled straight only but had humor on as well? What would show up.
If It's You It's Ok: a.k.a. "Wow Isabela is super hot, I'm going lezzie" Mid game toggle solves this right? Oh wait you've already passed the love trigger conversation....
Yes some of these are reaching and wouldn't effect a lot of people but I can already see the issue lining up. That particular cure would be worse than the disease. Especially since right now Bioware already has a great forum policy. That being "If you do not enjoy romance options in games, please stay out of discussions where fans of such romances can discuss them." As long as they enforce that we are good to go.

But I agree, there are numerous problems with the idea of any such toggle, which is why I don't really support it. I just, you know. Want to stop smirking at Shiala. :/

Mmhm. Take a note, game developers. If I have to conduct a massacre to avoid this kind of thing, you're doing it wrong.

I disagree completely. One can select gender at character creation, but that doesn't mean one has to act in a stereotyped masculine or feminine way. In most Bioware games, the most important thing it controls is who your character can romance. An NPC may occasionally flirt with one's PC, or one may occasionally (but not so often that it proves tiresome) encounter prejudice against or for one's PC's gender, but that's about it. I don't see how implementing the choice of sexual preference in a game would be remotely different: it would control who one could romance, though I think, given how many gay and bisexual people encounter prejudice in real life, it would be better if orientation-based prejudice wasn't included in the game at all. One isn't going to be broadcasting one's sexual preference on all channels, so best if one's gender (which is rather more obvious) is the control for such things, if they're going to be in the game.Chun Hei wrote...

All very well if that's what Bioware wants to do - but if, at some point, they find themselves wanting to have NPCs initiate romances, then I think using subtle cues would be the one good way of handling it. Another would be selection of sexual preference during character creation. But, in this respect, I'm talking more about future Bioware games after ME3, so I'd best leave it there and not stray too far from the topic.
As far as the game goes homosexuality and bisexuality are ways that the characters behave during the game. No other behavior is modified by character creation and it could insulting since there is no option to turn off a character's ability to steal, murder or torment the NPCs. That would be saying that being gay or bi in a video game is somehow worse than being a murderer or a thief even if you were not consciously thinking that.
Anyway, even if we were going to assume that such a choice was about the PC's actions, rather than what romantic options with other characters are open one's PC, lots of other RPGs have choices at character creation that do enable or limit various PC behaviours as the game goes on. Generate characters with different levels of Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma in Planescape: Torment, for example, and see the varying conversation options that open up or are shut off. Depending on the game, good/evil or lawful/chaotic character alignment would be another example. So, while I don't think that selecting sexual orientation would be a choice of this kind, choices of this kind do exist in character creation in lots of games without being remotely insulting. The idea that making option X, Y or Z available in character creation would mean that setting one's character to a certain value would be worse than murder or theft cannot be supported at any logical level, and was never thought by me in any way. It was unfair to imply otherwise.
Well I'd agree with you as long as your picking your sexual orientation in CC didn't prevent bi/gay/straight characters to hit on you, just you having the possibility of answering something that could lead to start a romance path with someone of your gender, same as being male and female did in the past two ME.
Thus, if a male s/s character would hit on manshep he will do it even if he's straight and the NPC won't be altered, but people who don't read and insecure straight teen boys won't have to worry about picking the wrong answer since their manshep will be straight and all his available answers won't lead to s/s romance.
If they wanna have less options to pick, let's let them have it, but homosexuality will still be present in the game as canon, as it is IRL and they should have to deal with it...0 tolerance to intolerance.
Me? all the way bi...the more options the better!!!

I have a Shep or two who could use that!
That's the thing about sarcasm, there is always someone who will take you seriously
TBH I get the smirking hate but at the same time it's totally something in character for many of my Shepards/Hawkes. And I can very easily RP it away when it's not. On the other hand if such looks are removed I won't be upset. So I shall not be advocating either way on the matter, sorry!

I admit that I thought the proposal was an attempt to put a nicer face on the "gay toggle" idea and I am sorry if I offended in my response.

Funny how I never see complaints of the sexy lesbian stuff.
This image IS rather tame compared to a lot of the Shepard/LI and Hawke/LI images I have seen. S/s or o/s.
Maybe it was because where you were posting the images? Having a picture of Shepard and Miranda getting ready to go at it on the Tali thread with a caption saying "better than a piece of alien ass" could be seen as starting a fight. I have seen that image before but I am NOT saying you were the one who posted it. I am just giving an example. That is why I did not post my lesbian Tali picture on her thread.

I would prefer it remain a series of choices made in the game as we are playing.
Same. Thankfully it seems to be the road Bioware is going down. It's the least amount of work for them, too, which fits the fact that romances really aren't the main focus of the game.

I am sure there may be some straight/bi guys and gay/bi women who may appreciate that photo and I would not mind it myself since I am no prude. But spare me your outrage.
If someone posted an image of Sheploo with full frontal nudity it would be banned since Bioware has a stated policy I read when I joined BSN that posting nude pictures could result in banning. Images of PDA (o/s and s/s) have been allowed in romance threads for a while. I am not sorry at all if the image of two guys demonstrating PDA in a s/s thread offends you.
