A simple no thanks or im not gay/straight reply can deter advances you dont want and flag yourself as offlimits ingame to any others.
The thing i dont like is when characters have no direction or are changed to appease some customers. To me someones sexuality helps define them and having npc's with a defined sexuality improves their character. I also find it more realistic, and im sure thats what many of us want in regards companion interactions. Right?
DA2 failed in its romances because imo all romanceable characters werent fully defined other than Isabella who describes herself as open minded and a flirt. The others were just so weak and imo lacked direction.
I do think there should be more s/s romances in games, i'm all for it as theres no reason it shouldnt be in the game, but that doesnt mean make every romanceable character available for all sexuality types, as in the end it makes them lack direction, is unrealistic and is just cheap.....in my opinion.

I saw a large number of people complain about just that. Even people who ended up romancing her commented on how 'desperate' she seemed. I recall one person who said he expected to come in and find Liara chasing Shepard around the engine room, ripping his clothes off.IsaacShep wrote...

I'd say the double standard at work is that usually people complain about the LI's when they first meet them (Isabela is a ****! Fenris is emo anime elf!) or after the game comes out. Rarely do people complain about the possible romance hitting on them months before the game comes out.

I guess I either didn't choose the right lines to get her to flirt, or my memory is fading. If it's Paragon based though I haven't played my Paragon FemShep since the game came out so that would explain why I can't remember it. I'll take a peek on Youtube later to refresh my memory...
I played paragon, so that might be it.

Do you think anyone really thinks about possible LIs hitting on them before they actually see it in the game? Obviously it sticks in peoples' minds (I've seen quite a few people who seem to think that both Anders and Fenris wouldn't stop coming on to their Hawkes), but I don't really think it is thought about beforehand. I know I expected flirtatious behavior from Isabela, but that's because I knew that she was that way back in DAO. I never played DAA though, so I came in with no preconceptions about Anders. When he pushed the issue, I just selected the heartbreak icon.

Well, you can decline his advances. And it's not common in Bioware games for the npc to take the first step and try to initiate a relationship. Usualy that's up to the player.

Well, according to some people on these forums, him hitting on you at all was a violation of their rights.

There was a thread last week about the possibility that Kaiden might hit on DudeShep and how horrible that would be. So, yes.hoorayforicecream wrote...

There have also been threads on this board asking for a 'sexual orientation' toggle. Specifically, so that male posters would never be hit on or propositioned by male LIs.Obviously it sticks in peoples' minds (I've seen quite a few people who seem to think that both Anders and Fenris wouldn't stop coming on to their Hawkes), but I don't really think it is thought about beforehand.
Yes, some people are thinking about this and dislike the possibility.
I'm going to suggest that the attitudes and exceptions of a bisexual woman might be different then that of a straight man.I know I expected flirtatious behavior from Isabela, but that's because I knew that she was that way back in DAO. Frankly I think it's annoying no matter what gender is doing the hitting on.

Apparently it's only offensive if it's a man hitting on another man, though. Every other time must be natural, right?

This appears to be the crux of the matter, though I do admit that I've seen a good number of complaints about Isabela's advances too. However, I get the distinct feeling that it wasn't her advances themselves that bothered them, but aspects of Isabela's character (how she's openly sexually promiscuous) that made them uncomfortable when she made her flirtations.
I'm really not sure how they can go about fixing this though; it's a double standard because it's widely accepted among gamer culture that girl on girl is hot. That's not something Bioware can really change (though I do applaud them for making Isabela and Merrill's relationship so loving and sisterly in DA2, compared to the more stereotypical catty possessiveness in DAO between Leliana and Morrigan).

Which is why I never understood ninjamancing complaints. To me it's just part of the story and characters, like every aspect.
Getting ninja-manced isn't the same as getting hit on. Getting ninja-manced means you've entered into a relationship with another character without realizing it. That's just bad writing (although stupidity on the part of the player does enter into the equation as well).

I think "Ninjamancing" has changed from it's original intent. I was under the impression that it reffered to romance flags getting set in Leliana's romance when they shouldn't have been, or applied to seemingly innocuous lines.

And yet isn't it nice to have a little variety among squadmate romances? Should it all be talk, talk, Paragon choice, loyalty, talk, sex? It adds variety to have some squadmates take the initiative, if nothing else. I thought the romances in DA:O featured enough variety in this regard. ME2? Not so much.

And perhaps im also a in a minority who likes being hit on. But im against being hit on or ninja molested by asari with out interrupts or ability to say whoa! back off. or by any one for that manner that should be just as in real life if you get hit on you should POLITLEY say hey hold there horses just my two cents take it or leave *shrugs*
But i suppose bioware catering to the shooter crowd did not help us either i know what that crow is like. Loud mouthed rude offensive narrow minded teens and its not a generalization asa Gaymer i get treated like poo on shooters.

Or her just plain confessing her love for the player character completely out of the blue. That was great fun the first time, what with her followup talk brimming with hurt expressions and accusations of how my warden was leading Alistair on.
Good times.

It's not a ninja-mance if the player is stupid though

The only real ninjamances in the Bioware games were in ME1 with Liara and Ashley. This was usually only a problem if you weren't trying to romance anyone at all because if you accidentally romanced both you'd usually get the confrontation scene where you can make your choice. Even after that you could shut them down at the locker scene or deny them at the night before Ilos.
At no point does Ander's ninjamance anyone, thanks to the heart icons. He acts like the desperate needy fellow he is and if you shut him down once he stays shut down. Leliana and Alistair get a few complaints but they are both the types to take the least bit of kindness and non-romantic interest the wrong way. I would deliberately tease Alistair all the time and he took it as romantic interest...this is where tone icons can be handy
Sometimes NPC do things we don't like, as indicated in their names because they aren't controlled by us. Now if you want to advocate for such writings not to happen that's your business but personally I have no metagame problem with any character hitting on my PC as long as it's in character. My response will depend on my character as well

I might try siding with Legion during the fight a few times too.

And that's why people are different.
Ninjamancing is irksome but not the same thing though the "oh I like you!" usually precludes ninjamancing if one's not careful. I don't want to get stuck in a romance, have to reject someone then get no more dialogue. That's just awkward. If you don't care you don't. I do.

No it isn't. I don't mind variation I do not want someone's feelings (especially not on a military vessel where people shouldn't be confessing to me out of the blue anyhow) shoved downmy throat. It's a video game. Some parts of reality are better left out. Not to mention there's those that have no interest in the romances period. Why force it on them?

And Leliana (happened to me once...it was painful b/c I was forcing myself to romance Morrigan).
Also, with Liara, you can't turn her down at the locker....if you get the ninjamance, it sticks....until breaking up in DLC.
