With any of the LIs I don't think turning them down after a certain point does anything. I turned down Ash at(it was Ilos not the locker room) and I still was considered in a romance -_-

The difference with Liara is that you still get the sex scene.

But you are right...getting that far with the ME1 romance sets the 'flag' that carries over to ME2, regardless if you do the sex scene.

Edit:  saw your edit...nvm the first part.

It's too bad they didn't have levels of romance, that could've added another small nuance to the romance.

In my first playthrough of ME2, I ended up ninja-mancing Jack. I was just trying to be nice and take an interest in her as a person!

This! I told Jack that I wasn't looking for sex when she asked, and the next conversation she's telling me to break up with Tali. <_<

I'm not saying that Bioware should never have crass sexist comments from NPCs in their games any more, I'd just like some variety in their gender specific lines other than the typical male-so-tough or girl-so-pretty.

"Wow! You're the tallest human female I've seen!"

"Do they let marines grow their hair that long? Most of you seem to keep it short."

"You should find a nice young man to keep you warm!" Whoops, sorry.

"You marines would look so much better if you'd shave your faces more often."

"Yo, dude! Nice ass! I'd like a swing like that in MY backyard! Woooooooooo hoooo! Hubba hubba!"

"You human females aren't so tough! How about you prove me wrong in this Varren fighting pit!"

This is probably what bothers me the most.  It's okay for anyone who plays as FemShep to get hit on by an Asari, because hey, lesbians are sexy, and you can just turn her down, while MaleSheps shouldn't have to denigrate themselves to turn down an advance from another man.  I'll take double standards for $500, Alex.  I don't remember ever seeing one thread about Liara hitting on FemShep.

Hey, gaymer Roachbugg.  That's freaking awesome.  Someone needs to design a gaymer sig, stat.   I would so put that in my sig.

Jack is like that sometimes. Always on the Bioware forums, starting a fight with the Talimancers.

I'm going to suggest that the attitudes and exceptions of a bisexual woman might be different then that of a straight man.

This appears to be the crux of the matter, though I do admit that I've seen a good number of complaints about Isabela's advances too. However, I get the distinct feeling that it wasn't her advances themselves that bothered them, but aspects of Isabela's character (how she's openly sexually promiscuous) that made them uncomfortable when she made her flirtations.

I agree. Sexually speaking, women should be seen and not heard while gay men shouldn't be seen or heard.

I'm really not sure how they can go about fixing this though; it's a double standard because it's widely accepted among gamer culture that girl on girl is hot. That's not something Bioware can really change (though I do applaud them for making Isabela and Merrill's relationship so loving and sisterly in DA2, compared to the more stereotypical catty possessiveness in DAO between Leliana and Morrigan).

BioWare can't fix this. But I don't think they're obliged to try.

I think we are all agreed that if people are being hit on there needs to be a chance to turn the person down, preferably in paragon and renegade flavors before they get all molesty on us.

That said I love that most of my femsheps are asari magnents ;)

Oh god the Asari.

My renedouche would've been punching them in the face for there constant groping if he could. Only human women are allowed to touch him. Well only Miranda is allowed to touch him.

I mean...just a side step option would've been nice.

How much it bothers me depends how it's handled on the whole. Isabela's flirty flirting with my various Hawkes didn't bother me all that much, as I've obviously the option to either pick up on them or side-step them entirely. Something like, say, Tali's professing of apparently quite deep running feelings and subsequent embarrassment is far more uncomfortable. It's not so much the expressed interest being unbearable, more not wanting to hurt characters I like.

Or somesuch. You can, of course, accuse me of being indifferent to a busty pirate wench being flirtatious because I'm male and busty pirate wenches being flirty are awesome. There's probably some truth in that.

Agree fully, getting romance flag when you really didn't chose any options that should lead to it shouldn't be happening. But characters hitting on Shep without Shep making first move should, it's just realistic (in real life some people hit on you, some are too shy) and if it fits the characters, then it's just a part of the story and the character.

I did! After I told her she had the wrong idea about my intentions, that's all she'd say to me.

No it isn't. I don't mind variation I do not want someone's feelings (especially not on a military vessel where people shouldn't be confessing to me out of the blue anyhow) shoved downmy throat. It's a video game. Some parts of reality are better left out. Not to mention there's those that have no interest in the romances period. Why force it on them?

I don't really buy the military vessel argument.  It certainly didn't apply in ME2.  We're working with the Alliance again in ME3, but it isn't clear to what extent.

I think the decision to make the romances reactive to the players is a good one, though.  Even space-Zevran shouldn't immediately hit on this.  Or this.  I'm curious to see what this reactivity actually means.  Does it simply mean that the NPC's will only act based on interactions in their personal dialogues?  Or will busting a cap in Shiala really turn Liara off (to use a ME1 example)?

*shrugs*

I would like it if they just reacted normally in everything except romances. Its not realistic but then again plenty of things in ME aren't. Shepard should always have to make the first move to step on the least amount of toes. That way if you ninjamance anyone it's your own damn fault.

I don't think killing Shiala should turn Liara off though. Shepard has no idea if Shiala is still infected by the Thorian and only got a moment of freedom. Sure the Thorian is dead but there's no guarantee that she isn't still infected by the spores.

Now decking the reporter should turn some LIs off and others on. But otherwise..if it's something that is somewhat justifiable I agree they should be turned off.

Being ninjamanced by Jack is so subtle that I only know I'm being ninjamanced when it's already too late. So I'm extra-careful when talking with her. Picking only neutral options is especially effective without having to look like a douche.
