The key line was different though. Kaidan's "Thinking you were gone... it was like losing a limb." versus Ashley's "I thought you were gone. I...you were more than our Commander." for Shep that didn't romance them. Ash speakes in the team perspective as well while for Kaidan it's solely personal and all about how he felt.Siansonea II wrote...
Horizon "broke my immersion", if you will, because it played out so similarly with Ashley and Kaidan. They literally said the exact same lines in a few places.

Yes, I am aware of that, it was the general "sameness" of the scenes that bothered me, the way that both characters moved and gestured the same way, the way that the conversations played out very similarly even if they weren't verbatim.

Yes "hearing" that's what I was planning on.....
Sometimes you almost make me cry Sian with your Ashley doubts but I am so signed on for tackle-and-glom poetry and action Ash!

Aw, not tryin' to bum you out, just offering up my own perspective on things. Like I said, Ashley as a f/f option doesn't bother me. Kaidan as m/m option doesn't bother me. But "Virmire Survivor" as s/s option does bother me. I just want those two characters to be treated as TWO characters, and what's good for the goose may not necessarily be good for the gander.

It will be interesting to see how they implement it.
Hudson's tweet referenced m/m and f/f romances as though they were a groundbreaking thing in the series, so it looks like (in conjunction with some of their other rhetoric that we've heard recently) BioWare are going to ignore the femShep/Liara romance and call it alien rather than same-sex.
With that in mind, it's more likely that they'll offer equal numbers in terms of s/s LIs, whatever their format. If Kaidan is the 'returning character male option' I can't see how anyone else but Ashley could be (logistically) the female one.
Squadmates aren't necessarily going to work the same way, and we might not even keep some characters for the whole game. If there are new bisexual characters (for both Shepards) also, it makes things a little crowded on the Normandy, let alone when we consider how many squadmates could be temporary, or need to pop up at some point. Garrus and Tali, for example, couldn't possibly be permanent squadmates if they could've died in ME2. At least with Kaidan/Ashley one of the two is guaranteed to be alive.
Like I said in another topic, the logistics of squadmates in ME3 are incredibly headache-y. It'll be interesting to see what happens but I can't really see how it's all going to work without someone getting upset.
I do totally understand, though, that separating Ashley and Kaidan as characters is really important (especially given their similarities on Horizon). It would be very unfortunate if they emerged as identical characters again in ME3 - I'd like our choice on Virmire to mean something more than just deciding the appearance/gender/voice of whoever happens to be the 'Virmire survivor character', if they have the exact same role in the third game.

1My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
2Thou art fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into thy lips: therefore God hath blessed thee for ever.
3Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty.
4And in thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and thy right hand shall teach thee terrible things.
5Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; whereby the people fall under thee.
6Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.
7Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
8All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.
9Kings' daughters were among thy honourable women: upon thy right hand did stand the queen in gold of Ophir.
10Hearken, O daughter, and consider, and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people, and thy father's house;
11So shall the king greatly desire thy beauty: for he is thy Lord; and worship thou him.
12And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall intreat thy favour.
13The king's daughter is all glorious within: her clothing is of wrought gold.
14She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework: the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee.
15With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall enter into the king's palace.
16Instead of thy fathers shall be thy children, whom thou mayest make princes in all the earth.
17I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever.
EDIT: I don't know why, since I'm an atheist and a fallen Catholic, but I really want a Jewish Ashley.
ANOTHER EDIT: Hey, dummy! If you are going to quote Psalms, you could have at least done a better job searching the internet for a sexier translation. If that is all it takes to get you excited I can stop working so hard.

To subvert expectations?
It would be a nice change of pace, really.
Given the rare abundance of middle-eastern names we've come across in the series, an islamic character could be interesting, too.

I know WHY most sci-fi characters have been White and (apparently) Christian, but caucasians don't make up the majority of humanity. Provided that Earth several hundred years from now doesn't segregate "colored" people from technological advancement, it's most likely that aliens will consider humans to be predominantly tan or brown in color and the major religioin will probably be some form of Islam or heavily influenced by Islam.

Not trying to be a negative Nancy but...I wouldn't put it past Bioware to bascially use them as the same person, with most of the dialog the same between them. They've been known to cut corners before. I hope I'm proven wrong.

I could be wrong, but didn't the codex say that 3rd-world countries were essentially still living in the 21st century?
It could explain the overabundance of white people in space.Earth is still divided among nation-states, though all are affiliated beneath the overarching banner of the Systems Alliance.
While every human enjoys longer and better life then ever, the gap between rich and poor widens daily. Advanced nations have eliminated most genetic disease and pollution. Less fortunate regions have not progressed beyond 20th century technology, and are often smog-choked, overpopulated slums.

There are so many characters that are potentially dead and so many other variables to take into account as well, can you really blame them for making the VS somewhat interchangeable?

Despite being an atheist, I do enjoy reading The Bible and other religious literature, but to me reading the codex in Bioware games is the equivelant of reading the Book of Numbers.

In a way, not really. I'm sure that's why it appears that most of the ME2 cast will NOT be available for the entire game. Most of the stories I've read in magazines about playing the game seem to indicated that it will rely heavily on the VS, Liara, and the new Alliance soldiers. I'm sure there will be specific missions where surviving squad-mates can appear.

I didn't care about the characters being able to die in me2, but i found the virmire thing pretty significant.
I'm sure bioware are trying to put as much consequential variation into the story and characters as is practical. Perhaps they were a bit ambitious about it, but I admire them for trying.

I'd like for them to be two different and unique characters like they were in ME1. I hate how after Virmire-gate and ME2, they're suddenly meshed into one identity. They are NOT the same.Em23 wrote...

It depends on what the end result is. Maybe less variables would be better. Maybe ME2 should have made it IMPOSSIBLE to save the entire team. Maybe Shepard should marry the LI, or mourn his or her death at the end of the game. I just care that whatever it is, it's done well and it makes sense.
