It's going to be real annoying when me being nice (IE: not a d*p****) to someone like Garrus results in him flirting with my character and forcing me into the negative response options. Being able to romance "everyone" is really very silly as well, considering that only a small percent of the population is gay.

False equivalency. Ninjamances have nothing whatsoever to do with the gender of the participants. The ME and DA series are both full to the brim with proof (three of four ME ninjamances are het, all six DA bi romances permit easy friendship).

Well to be fair its not like that with Garrus. With Garrus you have to actively ask it with Garrus, although I will grant that at first glance it might not be obvious that "blowing off steam" is the romance option (And I would have loved an actual sparring session with Garrus in a friendship path), but its nowhere near as bad as it is with Jack who you HAVE to romance, or **** off.

Femshep has to hit on Garrus not the other way around. I think that Bioware will make it your (Shepard's) job to initiate the romance ... not (put characters name here).

For me when I role play just because the options is there does not make it 'gospel' in that playthrough. Example, femshep & Garrus can romance if I (player) so desire - I don't. So in my game romance is not initiated and femshep & Garrus remain good friends, nothing more ... neither one of them would ever think of dating each other. Option is there but I do not initiate it for that story. It is all up to you as the player to decide how that relationship plays out. Nothing more, nothing less.

I don't understand the terms you're using here... Could you elaborate?

Happy to confirm #ME3 supports wider options for love interests incl. same-sex for m&f chars, reactive to how you interact w/them in-game.

The current topic is why I loved the icon inclusion in the dialogue wheel in DA 2. A simple heart/broken heart icon to enter/exit a romance is great for avoiding the so-called "ninjamances". (And seriously, the only real ninjamance was Leliana's faulty programming script)

There is a bit of merit, however. The very first time I played ME I ended up getting the confrontation scene with Liara and Kaidan because I didn't realize that being nice and personable meant that I was showing romantic interest in Kaidan. Part of that is my fault for not picking up on that, too.

Yep, you are SO right. It is pretty damn annoying when that happens. Hell, that's the reason I don't play DA:O anymore. Liliana ruined my immersion. ME1 sucked too. It scarred me psychologically forever when Liara threw herself at me and she seemed disappointed when I told her I wasn't hitting on her, I was just standing there breathing. Such blatant fan service has made me decide to NEVER buy a damn Bioware game again. I just want some realistic stories, damn it, with realistic characters. WHAT'S WRONG WITH AMERICA!? Oops, sorry. ...WITH CANADA!?

You realise this quote discloses nothing? It doesn't state how much leverage you have in your interaction with the characters. Will you be forced to take the "**** off" response, or can you have a friendly platonic relationship?

Not to be a naysayer, but that could be said of ME 1 and 2 as well.
Picking/not picking the romance dialogues could be considered "reactive to how you interact with them".

For the record, being bi-sexual doesn't mean you want to have sex with absolutely everybody by sheer definition.

It's irksome how often I have to explain that.

To a point, sure. But both ME1 and 2 had it's fair share of characters who'd spontaneously start hitting on yours. I wouldn't exactly call Kaidan, Ashley, Liara, Tali or Jacob "reactive to how you interact with them".

The generalization that all we think about is sex and are prone to cheating has become extremely wide spread.  I don't even know what to say anymore...

Yeah, I don't get it either. Thought it was a bit silly when Liara throws herself at you and you have to shoot her down. But now, the ability to romance any of your squad, regardless of species or sex... Beyond nonsensical.

Jeez, I truly admire you people. I read this thread only occasionally and envy your patience in dealing with same arguments over and over again.
Just...thank you all!

Sense went out the window once the travel screen allowed the Normandy to move to another star system without using a jump gate. And Jump gates are a bit of a stretch too.

No, all sense went out the window when the counsil made a human a spectre. I mean, that just makes no sense.

Okay, I'm getting way off topic here.

Looking back a few pages, I kinda like Liara's outfit. Makes me eager to see how her character has evolved since ME 2.

Yeah, I just caught myself almost losing it there. I, or in Abispa's case, we sometimes forget that there is someone new making his or her first comment on this thread because the same complaints are made over and over.

My short answers are: 1) It's a game. 2) Romances are accessories, like armor or weapons. They are another means by which we can customize our Shepards. 3) Just because you thought a gay "ninjamance" was handled badly in the past doesn't mean the solution is to not have gay romances in the future. 4) In a role playing game, MORE choices is supposed to be a good thing.

I think that's just because she's not looking straight on at the viewer and has her head tilted up.

There's things we can't really relate to (Future Technology and the Physics behind it), and there's things which we deal with every day - relationships between sentinent beings. The conversational interactions with characters in Mass Effect, regardless of character species, is largely based on human cultural norms of interaction. Therefore, even from just a continuity standpoint, it's highly strange that every single of your same-sex companions will be open to a sexual encounter with you.

Don't worry, I chatted with Chris Priestly about this. Her face is SUPPOSED to be blue.

This is at least partly incorrect. You can't even romance Ashley or Kaidan if you haven't been nice to them in conversation through the game - they never initiate and you have no option to. I don't know if the same system is present for the Romance options in ME2.

That too, which makes the Bioware "everyone is bisexual, and everyone who is bisexual wants to have sex with you" formula even more problematic. That's why Samara was IMHO a step in the right direction.
