Jacob is as handsome as any guy in the ME games. Once you figure him out he has a nice romance with Shepard. Not as good as Garrus my Garrus of course.

It is important for him to be able to do good foot rubs though. That is VERY important. I am not sure if it is as important for gay guys though. Enlighten me.

They really dropped the ball with Jacob... A character doesn't need to have daddy issues to be interesting, or a dark secret in the past. Why couldn't he have been conflicted about something, anything? His father being constantly absent might have given him an overblown sense of responsibility. Imagine talking to him about not doing enough, and whether ends justify the means. Imagine him having his own opinion, but willing to listen to yours, but only to some point (I didn't like the idea of changing a companion's outlook in the first game... turning Kaidan xenophobic just never seemed right). Imagine talking to him about the mission and how to make sure it succeeds...

Hell, he might be conflicted about his feelings for Shepard. CO and all that, by the book guy like Jacob could have some reservations against it. He might be conflicted about his former Alliance friends dropping off the radar, severing contact with him, not trusting him (Shepard would certainly relate better to him if that were the case). There doesn't need to be whining involved for the character to be engaging, just some sort of conflict.

Then again, maybe he doesn't open up to femShep because he's in the closet and learned to lock away his emotions >_>

Pretty much on the money, Demonic_Cookie. There's just no conflict to his character except his stonewalling Shepard when he's got nothing new to say.
Even with his loyalty quest, he's like, "Yeah, I was over my old man a long time ago. Whatever."
It's like... we're apathetic about him because he's disinterested in himself and everything else.
Except the priiiize.

Oh yes. Talking to Jacob about being stranded from friends and comrades from the alliance could've been great. Alas.

He could have been so useful to the storytelling, too. Imagine: Miranda, the voice of Cerberus, absolutely convinced that the most extreme measures are worth it for the results in the end, completely and utterly unconvincing and initially, equally unsympathetic, to the paragon Shepard. And her counterpart, Jacob - the doubter, the skeptic, the morally upstanding, righteous Alliance marine, who knows right from wrong, draws lines in the sand, but still, somehow, finds merit in working on this mission. Miranda talks in abstract ideals; Jacob was on Eden Prime, he's heard a Reaper scream in his head as it touches down and can speak first-hand to just how much Shep should be willing to let slide in order to beat them. They tried to set him up as this guy with moral fiber and yet he has no actual interest in anything you do. The whole "u werk 4 Cerberus naw mkay" railroad crap could have been done so, so much better, and Jacob could have been such an integral and fascinating part of it.

And it doesn't even have to be about Cerberus, really. When he gets on Thane about being loyal to more than his next paycheck, you should be able to be like "then why betray the Alliance;" there should be a fight there the equal of paragon!Shep's argument with Mordin on Tuchanka. When he says he's got reservations about some of your actions, you should be able to demand "which ones" and have a chance to defend or admit guilt over Feros or Torfan or the Council's deaths. When you refuse to hand over Veetor he should say he's glad to see this Cerberus op is going differently. Have an opinion, man! That's all I ask!

Though his romance was probably the best done in the game, even with the Priiiize. He's got some of the only actual branching dialog you get anywhere; I quicksave before conversations with Jacob, because they actually play out differently and offer up different, unique bits of Jacob dialog if you choose different responses. Here's hoping they do that with every LI in ME3, it's something I missed badly from Ash and Kaidan.

My only thoughts on this topic are: Jacob is boring and if he's the s/s romance my Shepard will die a virgin.

But his romance with femShep in ME2 was amazing. Have you seen it? He tries to be Shepard's rock, the one stable thing in her life, the one guy that says, "Hey, it's cool if you need to lean on me, 'cause everyone else is leaning on you."

And my gayShep would gladly romance him in ME3.

Nope never saw it. Never had any interest in seeing it. Honestly I never cared about any of the het romances that much since my canon Shep is gay.

I'm always envious of those players. If I have a RPG I have to try out all the options, it's very obsessiv and takes a lot of savegames.
I always rage when I reach the savegame limit in ME2. :pinched:

Just out of curiosity, why doesn't your Gay Shep like Tali?

My Sheps like everyone save the VS. Them they want to kick out an airlock (or just punch in the face...or just ignore). Tali though has little sister syndrome to most of my Sheps so they're all like "" when Tali says she has feelings for him. I really wish you had a "Uh...I see you as a sibling Tali. The thought of us being intimate is sorta squicky." (and a few Sheps see Garrus as their student so they'd be equally squicked by him hitting on them).

Jupp    =)    Jacob was the one pillar of strength for my paragade Robin. Can't wait to see how they treat him in ME3

Aah, catching up on this thread in the morning is a good way to start the day.

Seriously, though, if we were buddies of Jacob and he's going out on the town to pick up some guys or gals, how would you suggest he spruce himself up, make over, lie about, etc.?

Funny, I feel the same about Vega. If the option were given however I'd gladly flirt with Jacob and see where it goes, besides I always thought I picked up a a slightly gay vibe between ManShep and Jacob.

In fact I hope one of the import bonuses for Shepards that saved Jacob would be to have him (now Lieutenant Taylor) instead of Vega (I don't need a newbie introduction to the franchise nor am I drawn in by character made to appeal to a certain shooter demographic) presumably manning the armoury again.

What is the save limit?  DA:O was horrible in that.  I had to delete games to start some of the DLCs.  I found it very annoying.  (I play on Xbox) I didn't have a flash drive to store them on, so I had to delete.

50-ish on the PC, presumably because they're handled inefficiently (if I had to make an educated guess then I'd say that ME2 tries to read all save files during startup)

Well, the thing is we know pretty much nothing about Vega except that one screenshot and that he's supposed to be a help for player new to the ME franchise. That doesn't necessarily mean, BW won't give him an interesting backstory and make him an interesting character. Mind you, I see the potential of having another Jacob here (whom I found incredibly dull in ME2), but in the end it all comes down to the writing and we simply haven't seen much of that yet...

Everything I've read from Bioware's writing team suggests that they are trying to make the character more than just a vehicle to spew political theories and information about galactic alliances at new players.

I sorta understand why people might prefer Jacob to play this role, but ultimately this is a Bioware game and the new characters will play a role somewhere. I'm hopeful that Vega will be an interesting addition to the series.

I'd love it, for example, if Vega was the naive or optimistic counterpoint to Shepard's relatively jaded or experienced commander. Offering a fresh and uncynical perspective on the galaxy and its problems might be a great way to get people to rethink their position on some of the conflicts.

Then again, he may be a jarhead. Who knows?
