I'd take Jacob over Kaidan.  In more than one way.

I'd love it, for example, if Vega was the naive or optimistic counterpoint to Shepard's relatively jaded or experienced commander. Offering a fresh and uncynical perspective on the galaxy and its problems might be a great way to get people to rethink their position on some of the conflicts.

Then again, he may be a jarhead. Who knows?

The Gameinformer article described him as a seasoned soldier who's unfamiliar with the political workings and seedy underbelly of the galaxy.  So he could potentially be just what you described.

I thought he was meant to be the explain-what's-been-going-on-before-now guy?

Everything I've read from Bioware's writing team suggests that they are trying to make the character more than just a vehicle to spew political theories and information about galactic alliances at new players.

That may or may not be what the writers would like however I think this earlier post is spot on when it comes to what EA's marketing department wants:

"Siansonea II wrote...

Vega clearly exist for Marketing reasons as well.

"Hey little boy! Yeah you! You've never played a Mass Effect™ game before, but here's James Vega™—and this guy is just like you!
He's muscular to the point of immobility, he's got Douche Face™, and
he's got a hairstyle only a pre-teen would think was cool. So come
along, little guy, and play Mass Effect 3™, now available on XBox 360™,
PlayStation 3™, and PC!" "

So when it comes to what the writers want versus what marketing wants my guess is marketing wins every single time.

Agreed, more or less.  I don't think we need to be so quick to judge Vega.  We don't have that much information on him.  I suppose it's already too late to avert self-fulfilling prophecies, though.

The exact wording in the article is:

"He's kind of the entry point for when something bizarre happens," says executive producer Casey hudson. "The new player is probably thinking the same thing that Sanders[Vega] is. But it's not that Sanders is the dumb guy who is amazed by everything - He's a soldier. He's done his tour of duty."

That's all I was pointing out.
But a lot of what's been said about Vega has come from people on the forums who already don't like him for whatever reason.
Case in point the completely speculatory and insulting stuff Siansonea posted... <_<

This is... frighteningly plausible.

@bleetman: He is the means by which new players learn what's going on in the galaxy, but not because he knows about it all himself.

My guess is that he'll ask stupid questions about the various species and conflicts, and other characters (Liara, say) will answer him, forcing the player to listen to an explanation of the state of the galaxy.

The way Casey Hudson framed it was that the trial and conversations with Vega would essentially re-explain every single plot point and galactic conflict from the past two games, because (and this is a paraphrase) they don't think people will remember what happened even if they did play ME/ME2.

I hope they put some work into Vega, because having a character around for delivering exposition is not a character.

Too bad they can't have Vega sound like the classic jarhead, Gomer Pyle.

"Gosh, [male] Commander Shepard, you're just so purdy..."

And we find out the reason he has a mohawk is because the VS and Liara played a prank on him while he was sleeping. Or Jack pulled a prank on him while he was wide awake and screaming.

You know the writers will likely put their best efforts into making sure the new f/f romance surpasses expectations (if you're a straight guy that is), but m/m yeah that's an afterthought at best so they'll most likely dump it on the mandatory exposition character on steroids and call it a day. So yeah I have to likely reasons to dislike James Vega, one he'll be very annoying at best and two he'll most likely take the one m/m opportunity in Mass Effect away from some character I might actually like or find physically attractive.

Eh, I don't know. Let's not forget that marketing for Bioware games tends to be a little... 'inaccurate' would be a charitable way to describing it. The original ME2 trailers were atrocious. Remember this? All stuff from the game, and yet so, so wrong.

"Now who's the badass biotic, b***h?". Cringeworthy.

[edit] - Oh, and let's not forget this treasure. I'm amazed this one got through dialogue recording. Thane is nothing like this.

Agreed. BW's marketing tends to be all over the place.

I.E. "This is the new ****" and "AWESOME BUTTON!"

I mean...heavy metal music for a Dragon Age trailer? Really BW?

I see that you're all set to blame the possible lack of Kaidan S/S content on James Vega, a character you know almost nothing about.  I daresay you're in danger of a self-fulfilling prophecy here.  I plan to withhold judgment on Vega until there's more information available or the game is out and I've played it to completion.

DA2 had it's flaws, but I'm still a fan. And don't forget that ME3 has AWESOME melee combat! I wanna see some mercenaries EXPLODE!

Well this is the new **** was referring to DAO not DA2...I mean...you look at DAO's trailers and it looks like an action game. Then you start playing and you're all like "" unless you watched the Let's Plays by th developers.

Oh yes ME3 is gonna be EPIC EPIC EPIC EPIC. BW's marketing never fails to make me lol.

Totally not understanding the Vega haterade. We know little about the guy. He could be interesting and fun but OMG because of his looks and the fact that he's the new guy HE MUST BE BORING AND GENERIC AND FOR FRAT BOYS! Judgemental much? It's like the 'OMG KAIDAN'S GAY BECAUSE HE TALKS ABOUT HIS FEELINGS!' nonsense excpet they at least had the decency to wait until they knew the characer before they started their b*tching. Now I don't mind b*tching about the looks because that's something we actually have a somewhat good view of (even if the character isn't finished with concept) but how are you guys complaining about his personality? You get a copy of ME3 early or something! Do share.

For the ME and Bioware fans, the game is going to sell itself. You have to remember that it is marketing's job to sell this game to people who have no idea what Mass Effect is. No easy task.

I was originally going to say something along the lines that they should at least try and advertise it in a way that's remotely truthful. Then I stopped, realised what I was doing, and laughed at myself for being such an idiot.

Haha, truthful marketing. Oh, brain. You're doing it wrong.

"It's a first person shooter where you and two of your bestest buddies (game controlled, not multiplayer) armed with machine guns and rocket launchers save the universe from god-like sentient machine starships that eliminate all sapient species every 50,000 years. Along the way you'll assemble a rag-tag group of humans and aliens (you won't be able to tell from the animals) and solve their self-esteem issues so that they can survive the ending movie set up for the final battle. Also includes simulated romance with various genders and species of life, including the new revolutionary male-on-male snuggle-bunny option. Now with even MORE CODEX! Come enjoy your immersion to a galaxy of excitement!"

Yes except EA's marketing seems to only ever want to target the teenage male demographic (no matter what the games suggested rating actually is) never mind that the average gamer is in his or her thirties. Also Bioware has a lot of fangirls (I personally know more women than men who play Bioware games) yet almost nothing EA marketing does is ever aimed at them.

Yeah, I agree, it's not an easy task to market products in times of economic crisis but if marketing for (mainstream) video games ever aimed for something other than the teenage male with a well put together campaign I think they might be pleasantly surprised and we might get better games.
