Since you gave me a earnest answer I'll explain it further I bought DA:O and after coming across a video I found out Alistair was a LI.  It changed the game for me because I liked Alistair but I had to be cautious not to trigger his romance.  Because the game was this way from the beginning I adapted and it did become a chore trying to remember to save before talking to him or that assassin.

With ME the game was never this way I can play it carefree explore every response and enjoy it.  The game is being changed and I'm accepting of this, I don't understand how the toggle isn't accepted because it will only affect how I and others who use it play the game and no one else.

Since you like to explore dialog trees extensively, I'm sure you come accross options you don't really like for whatever reason...what do you do then?  I would imagine you'd eventually reload and pick the one that fits your character more.  That's what I do at least.

Why is it so difficult to do the same with possible homosexual romantic dialog?

Thank you.

So it's offensive if i'm understanding you correctly because of acceptance ?  Not everyone will accept it, not everyone accepts me I don't have a fit I simply don't care.  You point out a number of reasons why it shouldn't be a big deal and I agree but why is it a big deal to those who oppose a toggle ?  Like you said it's video game character.

First of all: Alistair is NOT a s/s option. You saw a video of a modded game and jumped to a conclusion.
What if I told you ME was intended to have s/s from the begining? Because it was.

You know that an effective toggle is? Not selecting the options that initiate a romance? Especially since now, they'll be clearly pointed out like they were in DA2.

You also contradict yourself.
Why is playing it "carefree and exploring every option" requiring a s/s toggle? That's eliminating a host of options right there. It's also a very head in the sand "if I dont see it, it's not there" reaction to the touchy subject of homosexuality.

I'm going to stop myself as this isn't even remotly on topic.
S/S is going to be in the game, like it or not, I just thing its silly and petty for it to be a deal-breaker for enjoying an otherwise fin and enjoyable game.

But I have to question "progress" in a video game ?  It's entertainment and just because same sex options were added to the game doesn't mean it should change what I've become accustom to playing.

Portrayal of a demographic in media has a lot to do with progress.
How many times do you roll your eyes when you see a black character acting "thug" and "gangsta" or even those in the media who perpetuate the stereotype?
The Cosby Show, while in "entertainment" had a lot to do with altering perceptions, based around their portrayal and the jobs the characters held.

Ok I get the media aspect that was lost on me before. I wasn't considering a video game informative media.  And to be honest it really isn't the same thing, though I get the point you were making is not lost.  I get what your saying.

Bioware has pushed the envelope more than any other gaming company in terms of presenting and portraying homosexual/bisexual characters. Getting the player, even on an unconscious level, to re-evaluate their stance on such topics helps breed tolerance and understanding.

This is in response to the underlined portion.  I don't think a video game is the proper venue for this.  I play Video games for fun and stress relief (because it's so fun) not to have my ideals questioned. If it's built into the storyline sure, otherwise I don't desire it.

Thanks for the serious response it's a lot more meaningful then the dismissive haha posts which do little to detour me.

So you were not only privileged by having straight romances (while gay people didn't) but also because you could play carefree as you knew there weren't any romances you didn't want to (while gay people had to play the past two games very carefully not to romance any characters they didn't want to). Why exactly should you continue to be privileged? Should it be a prize for your animosity towards gay people? Think about it. Really think about it.

Video games are a changin' though.

Plus, if it's not built into the storyline and you can avoid it, then what's the problem again?

Well, let's see:

I didn't like the fact that, in ME2, NPCs and squadmates so frequently hit on Shepards of mine who I considered to be romantically committed. Likewise, when cinematic direction attempted to create sexual tension with said characters.

There were reactions that my Shepard had under those circumstances that he would and should not have had, if I'd been given my druthers and taking into account his status.

I didn't want it to happen. It actively bothered me whenever it did. I dare say that it bothered me more than any reasonable, non-homophobic person would be bothered by brushing up against homosexual content, because Shepard fidelity isn't an issue about which I am reasonable.

Could I toggle the sexual tension off?

No I could not, and it still didn't come close to ruining my enjoyment of the story, or even tarnishing it to a noticeable extent.

Sure, you might say that expecting a toggle would have been silly and delusional, and would have constituted hiding from reality, but that reality is not any less real than people who would prefer to toggle off gay content would be hiding from.

Folks asking for a gay toggle are silly.

Gaga forbid you're exposed to something so incredibly toxic! Quick, quick, someone make sure Bioware adds an anti-homosexual-radiation suit to Shepard before he catches The Gay and passes it on to the player!

I just had such a nice meaningful exchange with ArawnNo then you go and post this.  It shows your maturity or lack of it.

FoxHound109 wrote...

Unless every dialog option is specifically labeled "Romantic" exploration of responses will undoubtly uncover the optional content.  So now I can't see every response a teammate might have or all of their dialog as I may trigger optional content I am uninterested in.

There's a HUGE difference between being "uninterested" in something and wanting to avoid it at all costs. You should look into it.

yeah it changes how I was feeling at that moment I might of been laughing so hard I'm crying or emotional charged then I go to meh blank stare when coming across the "uninteresting bits".

FoxHound109 wrote...

I find it highly hypocritical that those who desire the optional content wanted it and got it but now are against making it optional.

LOL, because Bioware is forcing the romances on you, amirite? Nevermind that you can tell them you're not interested and even play the ENTIRE series without romancing a single character.

ArawnNox highlight some points and while I haven't changed my position I'm open to input that further explains a fair equal reason for it not to be.

Ideals are questioned in any form of storytelling whether it be movies, games, TV shows, or literature. If you don't want to have your ideals questioned, I suggest you go hide under a rock. If you find a form of storyselling that fails to criticize anything, I'll applaud you. And no, children's stories don't count for lack of a plot. "See spot [insert action here]" obviously don't have any critical views.
