Is there a video of the Casey Q&A where he mentions s/s romances or do I need to just wait until Bioware TV cycles back to it (if that's where it was)?
I know he doesn't say much but I just like watching the Q&A's... Ok I just like watching CHud. :bandit:

ETA and nevermind just watched it.

I REALLY like the idea of the new friendship bonding thing too. Making a proper distinction between a friendship and a romance will definitely help prevent ninjamances and make sure the dudebro's don't have to suffer the terror of hitting on their bro.

Friendship and bonding? Details for those of us too lazy to watch it?

Apparantly there was fan-feedback about wanting the game to recognize and explore Shep's friendships with squadmembers. Casey was vague as usual but he said something about how they wanted to give players the option to do things with other crew members other than romances. He specifically said friendship bonding and something about "being able to do more thing with characters that aren't love interests"

I got the impression it basically meant more cutscenes and more dialogue options with squaddies based on their interactions or alignment or whatever.

Somebody else might be able to explain it better.

Yeah, sounds like you'll get the depth out of the party member that you otherwise wouldnt get unromanced.

"Okay, Tali, time to discuss that "linking suits" talk."

I'm just saying that was an awkward place to run out of dialogue for femsheps.

It was almost as awkward as the "girls' club" ending dialogue for Jack and femSheps. Definitely looking forward to that explanation.

I'm hoping it means more things like getting pissed with Dr. Chakwas, only with squadmates. That scene was adorable.

And yeah, thanks for the link.

I'm really starting to wonder where they'll find the time. In ME1, we had six squadmates, and only two really ever got truly, properly fleshed out relationships with Shep. Kai and Ash got long, multilayered conversations that can go in different directions, change their character, and define Shepard's; Liara, Tali and Garrus got a decent mix of character arc and encyclopedia moments and a bit of a chance to show what kind of Shep you are; Wrex just talks at you.

In ME2 we had twelve, and they all just talked at you. To the point where, actually, the two who do literally just talk at you, Zaeed and Kasumi, ended up almost the most fleshed out and connected to the rest of the story (with IMO only Mordin and non-squaddie Joker reaching VS levels of connection). The whole of Miranda's romance put together, from the first conversation to the last, is as long as one single post-mission chat with Ashley.

Now we've got fifteen potential returning squaddies, plus Vega, plus potentially any new female squadmate, and they want to do proper friendship paths as well as romance paths.

This will either be the richest RPG, character-wise, since PS:T, or an unmitigated disaster.

(@JF: Thank you :crying: Don't get me wrong though, I am happy for Middy and Apollo, they've certainly earned a respite.)

I agree. Considering how overall ME3 has a much more urgent setting, I'm thinking it will be difficult to find the time to properly develop friendships/romances with every squadmate during the setting.

I now FULLY believe that Vega is a L.I. When asked about romances, Hudson kind of slipped up. He said: "We're gonna' bring back the characters you had romances with, there are new characters.."

It's right around the 25:00 mark on the video. Suggesting that new characters (and he uses the plural) will be romance options...

I'd put my money on depth. It's rather clear Bioware are going crazy with their budget and resources, they obviously want to improve the characterisation of ME2.

I'm trying to be uncharacteristically optimistic about it and failing that, just hoping the characters I dislike get minimal time spent on them. I was pleased to hear another affirmation of same-sex which I was definately worried about being cut. The m/m anyway.

I've been watching the live feed, by the way (including awkward Ali 'Millis' moment) but where are the earlier videos? I'm pretty out of the loop, I'd totally forgotten comic-con was going on.

Yeah, I was really pleased with the smaller squad and supposed focus on depth and character interplay. I'm hoping theres only one or two more characters. Preferably one but I'm assuming there'll be a DLC character and a new female human.

He used plural (regarding new LIs) in one of the original tweets announcing s/s romances as well, so it's just granted now Vega won't gonna be the only new squadmate/LI/new same-sex LI. New female squadmate/same-sex LI is sure-bet IMO.

"Next time, the Normandy gets a bar!"

Hopefully Shepard's hope will be realized. I can see the many segments similar to the DA2 bar scenes. Maybe even see the crew and commander hold a karaoke night. That could be a really cool way to use the microphone and Kinects. Weee!

JOKER: Um, Commander? Don't you think we should stop the Reapers?

SHEPARD: *Drunk.* Shut up! Just a few more intrusive questions to with the new squad-mates and they'll be jumping into my pants! Works EVERY time!

Marketing Pitch:
Are the rigors of fighting the Reapers keeping you from getting to know your favorite squad mate? Want to just sit down and have a quiet chat? Well, Shepard's engineering crew have come up with schematics to work in a new common lounge area into the Normandy.

Complete with bar, dance floor, and kareoke pit, the new lounge area is the perfect place for Shepard and his/her squad to blow off steam and get to know each other. Unlock new dialoge and get to know your team on a more personal level. Invite non-permanent squad members to a night of drinking and fun and forget all about that pressing war for humanity's survival.

Why does this acutally sound like a neat idea?

While I hope it won't be an unmitigated disaster, I also don't think that with such a large number of potential squadmates we're going to see all that much more dialogue per team member than ME2 had.
If I had to guess I'd say most team members dialogue will be about the same length as ME2's were except that in ME3 everyone will be able to get slightly altered versions of the one or two extra conversations that were only available during romances in ME2 on a friendship path as well.
The only thing about this that really worries me is that they might decide give Kaidan only a 'bromance' instead of a real romance with MShep.

Yeah, unfortunaetly that still leaves us guessing as to Kaidans availability with all this I'm starting to wonder if perhaps Kaidan VA read too much into the new "bromance' option.

I wonder what was the PR bullcrap. "We're gonna have smaller squad than in ME2 to focus better on the characters" or "we're gonna have everyone in the squad one way or another, they will come and go and no one's permanent yet everyone will have amazing romance and bromance". These two are mutually exclusive and the first one is actually pointing out that the second one is an unrealistic dream. Seriously, BW's marekting doesn't make sense sometimes.

He said what BioWare devs told him themselves. Doubt BioWare would tell him about bromance and he interpreted it as romance. It's rather big difference.

Not everyone has to come back in a large capacity though. Mordin, Samara, and Grunt for example could be pushed to mission specific NPCs like Mordin is in the demo Jesse is constantly playing.

From the way Casey was talking I really got the feeling that the core squad, the properly perminent group, is going to be extremely small. Possibly even just VS, Liara, Vega, and The Vigilante. with everyone else being temporary in one way or another.
I also got the impression that "temporary" is going to involve a lot of different things.  Deaths for starters. Non-squad NPCs. Plot related departures. Mission-based-availability. And maybe even an ultimatum or two.

I hope so, I really really REALLY hope so. 'Cause if we finally get the s/s romances but it turns out no one is in the game for more then like 50% of the time, then how much unluckier could we get? To finally get it just to have it be really short (because there's just no physical way the romances could be as long as in previous games if the characters are not as long in the squad as in the previous games)

I hope that the same-sex male romance stays with us for most of the game--and yes, I feel that way for very selfish reasons. After waiting and waiting and waiting for the man of his dreams, gayShep is going to want to hang on to him!

Male Romance: I know that fighting the Reapers is important, but the plot says I must leave the Normandy and go far, far away.

Gay Shepard: But... I just found you! :crying:

It would be so sad. I'm really hoping that the "deeper emotional connection" the Bioware keeps promoting will really pay off for fans who have been waiting for same-sex romances.

Yes, I agree with this exactly.

It really makes 99% of the forum topics arguing about 'omgz who will fill the rest of the four permanent squad positions?!?! I want Wrex!11one" very irrelevant.

Hudson's been pushing the line (even if it was fed through a marketing filter) that ME3 is a war story and the squad won't work in the same way as ME/ME2.

Other Bioware devs have hinted at similar things, at least on Twitter.

I'm under the impression that Garrus and Tali are tagging are along for the duration, mostly because they've said as much before. But yeah, 'small team this time' seems to be the general idea. Which, to be honest, isn't a bad one. ME2's roster was pretty absurd.

(Unless they've changed their minds, meant something else or the livestream says otherwise, 'course. I've yet to get around to watching it.)
