As for it not being mentioned more after....Hendel's character has been quite well-established by then and it's not particularly relevant to the plot. Neither is anyone else's sexuality once Jiro's cover is blown, which is why theirs aren't brought up constantly throughout the novel either.

I still maintain the stance that Hendel's sexuality is ambiguously gay at best, and a joke at worst. Like Prietor Gavorn, his sexuality is only brought up in a humourous and arguable context. Kahlee's implications read as a running gag, and it boarders on offensive.

I cannot wait for my male Shepard to be openly gay in ME3. I want to take the heterocentric, lesbian-exploiting universe and scream, "GAY MEN EXIST, DEAL WITH IT. A GAY MAN IS GOING TO SAVE YOU FROM THE REAPERS. DEAL WITH IT."

Can we try and keep this out of the gutter.

It hardly helps to counter the stereotype that every member of the BSN is a raving sexual deviant who fantasises about fictional characters.

I mean, seriously.

What constitutes in the gutter exactly?

Because there's an entire thread still open discussing Asari reproductive organs. And a few hours ago there was a half page discussion about alien shower sex...

I'm just saying, it's a bit... unbecoming.

A few months ago someone posted some excerpts from Bioware's forums about people squeeing over DA2 and ME2 characters, and some sections of the interwebs laughed their bums off at the lengths people went in devotion to their favourite characters. I think even many people on BSN would concede that the eleventy thousand posts about "OMG I love Tali so much and I want to marry her and have babies through genetic engineering!11one" is getting a bit too involved.

I'm not meaning to be prudish, but if someone waded through the last 70 or so pages and saw dozens of discussions about whether Shepard/Alenko/Vega/Joker was a top or bottom, or whether they enjoyed toys, or whether fisting was involved, etc - what would their conclusion be?

More to the point, is this thread the place for that kind of stuff?

Just thinking out loud.

I didn't really have this interpretation, but that's an interesting standpoint.

For me Mitra's devotion to Gillian was a far more important part of his character than him being gay; his sexuality was almost incidental after the start of the book and he was portrayed as a thoroughly good character.

It was actually refreshing that we had a stable gay sidekick with no internal demons, no tormented soul or evil intentions, and badass biotics. Even Kahlee's light-hearted jokes were just a way to tell the audience without revealing it outright. Plus, the reactions of the other characters don't show even a hint of prejudice.

If you want to talk about the specific mechanics of any sexual union take it out of this thread and into a private group. God knows I'm in some that would make the rest of this thread blush if it were posted here. I'm not talking about generalities but when you go on and on and on and on and on about size, topping, bottoming...it's just annoying.   Without mentioning against site and thread rules.  I'm not going to chastise anyone for a one off comment and a rejoinder but give me a break. And anyone who want's to accuse me of homophobia because of that...well I have no words. Be considerate and just knock it off.

They are all apparently voiced by male actors. Not the same thing.

I would agree with you if Hendel was the one who identified himself as gay, even casually. If he was there, all bad-ass and confident, "Oh, by the way, I'm gay and I'm not going to be overt about it I'm just going to hint at it lightly because my sexuality shouldn't be that big of a deal," then yeah, I'd be right there with you.

But instead, it's someone else who outs him from the closet, and her lines read as, "Teehee, I should hook you up with him! 'Cause.. .'cause he's GAY! GET IT? HE LIKES MEN! WINK WINK, NUDGE NUDGE!"

The only cool vorcha is voiced by Mark Meer.

I wonder how a Meer on Meer romance would work.

I never got this from Hendel or from Kahlee. Hendel himself was The Dude You Do Not Eff With, and that's not a stereotype by any means, and Kahlee clearly holds him in the highest regard. I think Hendel's sexuality is just an aside, since the story being told isn't about romance, or a romance he's participating in, anyway. Hendel's conflict seems to be more about him being a biotic than anything to do with his sexuality. I think that was the point of his homosexuality being brought up in the story at all, to illustrate that the old prejudice against homosexuality had largely disappeared, but there was this new prejudice about biotics that had taken its place. That was my take-away, anyway.

No it's not. You might want to read the OP and the site rules again. Sex is not a forbidden discussion topic and everything that's been said over the last two pages has been on topic.

Also, only two of the mentions by Kahlee, her clueing Jiro in and her later thought about the receptionist mooning over Hendel, count as jokes, and the latter is debatable. It's more just a wry observation.  I certainly don't see it as being at Hendel's expense in any case.  The situation with Gillian asking if Kahlee will marry Hendel is mildly humorous, yes, but it's about Gillian and her social naivete, something that's not unusual for a kid her age but which is magnified by her autism, and also about showing how she views two of the most important people in her life. I.e., as surrogate parents, due to her father being a distant, infrequent presence. The other actual joke is from Jiro, and it's pretty clear that you're supposed to think he's something of a jackass for making it.  Kahlee certainly thinks so, anyway.

But see, if it truly isn't a big deal, why would Hendel ever bring it up? The only time he would realistically bring it up is in the context of romance, and he doesn't have a romance storyline in the books. And most of the book is from Kahlee's point of view, so naturally we're hearing her observations about people, rather than their own. I really don't like the idea of a big "Oh and by the way, I'm gay!" announcement, because it's making a big deal about something that shouldn't be a big deal. It is actually being overt about it. I don't think a gay character has to hit you over the head with a message of empowerment to be empowering, if anything I think it takes away from the power of the character, because then they just become That Gay Character.

There has been an interesting discussion of gay characters in the ME novels but not that many people comment on it because I am guess not that many people have read it. An "off comment" from one person can get a response from dozens of people and some of those posts can have several responses and it can be difficult for each individual to figure out that s/he has written the comment that takes it too far and keeps it going too long. There have been times I type something like this and by the time it posts a whole page has gone by.

I am guilty of taking it too far I guess but I will try to not scare people into hiding anymore if that is what I am doing. I am sad that we are not getting a lot of s/s female posts. Is that because so many s/s female fans are actually straight males who are scared by m/m talk? I do not think anyone would mind guys saying they like f/f LIs just so long as they do not insult m/m LIs.

Maybe we should talk more about the non-sex parts of the romances but since the LIs have not been announced yet it is difficult to comment on romances we have not seen but we have all seen their looks and can guess their physical capabilities.

Well first off the single sentance you ripped from a whole post(learning something from the trolls eh?) to make some sort of cute point wasn't a direct response to any specific post but to concern, expressed privately, publically, byme and quite a few others about the tone and direction of this thread over the last 4 or so days.  If you don't know what is going on maybe you review the situation first before jumping in while uninformed.

There were definitely subtle ways that Hindel could've indicated his sexuality without randomly shouting "I'M GAY!"

Did you ever watch LOST? I thought that the character Tom was a perfect example of this. When the female lead implied that he was going to watch her take a shower, he just kind of laughed to himself and said, "You're not my type." He was a bad-ass, unstereotyped homosexual man, but he never made a big deal about it or left it to other characters to out him from the closet.

I mean, yes, Kahlee tries to be "subtle" in revealing Hendel's sexuality, but I would've prefered if this role had been left to Hendel himself. Again, I feel like most of Kahlee's lines about his sexuality read as, "wink wink, nudge nudge" and it actually belittles his sexuality.

I don't find Kahlee little jokes offensive at all, in fact, they mirror some of my own experiences where a girl has told a friend of mine that they like me, and my friend will tell me later and it'll go like this:

"So it turns out Harriet/Sally likes you?"
"Oh, really?"
"I didn't have the heart to tell her" or "Poor thing doesn't know she's wasting her time"

Or the lady at the chinese takeaway who keeps trying to set me up with her niece now that she knows I'm single, and no matter how much you try to hint at me being gay or tell her outright that I am she still doesn't get it. I think we got to her to: "I just don't want a girlfriend" "OH! No girlfriend now, but later, maybe?" "Uhhh... sure?"

All in all, we just end up making those mental jokes every time it happens. Then having a good lauigh about it later.
