Hmm... which reference to make?
Full Metal Jacket?
"The rifle's name is Sharlene, sir!"

Or Firefly?
"I call her Vera." <3

Or Dragon Age?
"Bianca, you minx!  That was beautiful!"

Or Mass Effect?
(Can't find a decent Jessie quote)

I just posted this in another thread, but thought I would post it here too...reason...I wonder if times are a'changing and the majority of society is finally getting over the ridiculous issues:

"....'Tis a funny thing watching so many people saying if said NPC didn't admit having an interest in s/s in ME1, that they have to be hetro only. My eldest daughter has many friends (a social soul)...I meet the majority of them and hear about their lives....the sheer number of them who start out dating o/s only, only to then step out of the closet (so to speak) and announce to their friends, "Actually I prefer s/s or I'm Bi" still staggers me....I'm just happy their in with such a great crowd and their choices are not questioned, just accepted...usually just gives the group another excuse to throw a party...:wizard:..."

If vega was the m/m romance for shep I wouldn't care, I would prefer that actually and alot of other posters wouldn't care about him being s/s either. I think the only real complaining they'd do is if you say no and he keeps going trying to win you over.

Since when has that ever happened in a Mass Effect game? It's always been "turn character X down, they never mention it again".

I think people are being unreasonably pessimistic about the whole thing..

Question: When you're doing Kasumi's LM, and you need Hock's voiceprint, a femShep who uses the right-side polite option for the first response gets a left-side *flirt* option for her second response that procs Hock's self-important "people these days..." speech.

So:
a) What option does dude!Shep get instead?
B) How cool would it be if dude!Shep actually had the option of flirting as well, in a situation like that?
c) How badly would the dudebros whine if given that kind of option with NPCs like Hock, rather than OMG NOT MY BRO, BRO squadmates like Garrus?

She does?! Really...? *immediately launches game to investigate*

Huh, look at that, femShep can "flirt" with Donovan Hock. ....if your definition of "flirt" is "come off as a desperate, desperate hussy." Go figure.

a) What option does dude!Shep get instead?

Male Shepard proproses a professional alliance with Hock. Instead of "[Flirt] You're not offensive," male Shepard's dialogue option reads, "I think we could be allies."

If you click that option, male Shepard says, "I hope you won't let one unfortunate incident sour our business relationship." ......which could've been slightly flirty if he'd simply said, "relationship." Not as flirty as femSheps, "Maybe there's somewhere we could go to [get better aquainted]" but... oh well.

B) How cool would it be if dude!Shep actually had the option of flirting as well, in a situation like that?

SO AWESOME. Considering that if Hock had been female (or an Asari) both genders would've been allowed to flirt with her, I definitely think that male Shepard should be allowed to flirt his way through those kinds of situations. Flirting to get the villian off guard should be equal opportunity!

c) How badly would the dudebros whine if given that kind of option with NPCs like Hock, rather than OMG NOT MY BRO, BRO squadmates like Garrus?

Ugh, I don't know. They'd probably complain and say, "MY MANSHEP ISN'T LIKE THAT! HE WOULDN'T FLIRT WITH A MAN NO MATTER HOW BADLY HE NEEDED INFORMATION!" and...

Ugh, I don't want to think about this any more. Why does Mass Effect fail so hard at gender roles and representation? :pinched:

I hope ME3 is better. The same-sex options sound promising, like they're finally going to listen to us, but they've set such a poor precedent that sometimes I just can't help but feel... doubtful. :(

I agree.

Although, Bioware have said that they were going for a Bond-movie feel in that particular mission, and it's a bit of a trope that the 'male lead masquerading as a ruthless businessman' tries to propose an alliance with the villain, while the female lead attempts to use sex appeal.

Not saying it shouldn't be subverted, but that may have been why the options were the way they were.

If I remember correctly, Fable II (or was it III?) allowed both genders of hero to proposition a male guard to get out of jail. Or maybe it was another game entirely, and I'm forgetting...

I don't know about Fable, but Bioware's own DAO had that option.  You could even get the male guard to take his clothes off, and then attack him, as a male character.

That was in DA:Origins, actually! I don't recall anything like that in any of the Fable games... but I know that DA:O let the Warden seduce a male guard in order to escape inprisonment, despite the Warden's gender. That was pretty awesome.

Fable kind of jumps around when it comes to gender equality... It allows gay marriage and adoption, and that's awesome, but the "plot" relationship in Fable 3 is always heterosexual (that is, you get a male partner if you play a female, and a female partner if you play a male) and there's a side-quest where you have to seduce a villian, and the villian always changes his or her gender to the opposit of your character.... but then again there's other missions where you can save and kiss a princess no matter which gender you are and there's a plot-mission where you have to dress up as a princess no matter what gender you are.... Ugh, so many mixed messages!

also KawaiiKate:

Oh, of course it was DAO! In Fort Drakon? I thought it was either that or Fable...

Woo to Bioware!

I guess that's just more proof that they're one of the only studios (if not *the* only one) who can put that sort of stuff in-game as a choice without needing to justify or explain it. Then people *still* rage about an NPC hitting on them.

KawaiiKatie wrote...

This frustrated me, actually, as it was just about the only 'relationship' in the game that had substance or depth.

I have to credit Lionhead for giving players plenty of choices, but it's safe to say their characterisation isn't really on par with other studios (say, the one whose forum we're in :P) - the games are very light and often very funny, but with little dialogue or options to interact with other characters. I appreciate the option to decide the hero's gender and sexuality, but when it only extends to choosing one of 100 nearly-identical NPCs to marry, the impact is very diminished...

If people want same-sex romance for MaleShep, fine. BUT !!! I want a dialogue option or something to point out that MY Shepard is COMPLETELY straight. And I don't want Kaiden or Vega or any male in the game hitting on Shepard, it could ruin the whole roleplay for me. Because their legs would be broken in few seconds if they would try to suggest something to my Shepard.

No offence guys.

I'm pretty sure gay fellas have better things to do than try to "convert" straight guys. I think a solid "how about no" is all you need to nip that in the bud.

I always find it funny when straight guys think we're trying to convert them. News flash: there are plenty of super hot gay men. We don't need to convert you at all. We've got plenty to choose from. :P

Speaking as a straight woman, you wouldn't want the straight guys anyway. Half of them don't even brush their teeth or wash their hands after using the restroom. Or maybe it's just the ones I've met...<_<

LOL. Ew. D:

When will straight men learn that hygene isn't a feminine/gay thing? Hygene is your friend, gentlemen!

Strawman has a point I think. It just makes sense that Shepard can come back from the dead to wage intergalactic war with cosmic horrors that appear as sentient cuttlefish spaceships with a Xanatos gambit going on trillions of years for fate of the known universe, but gays hitting on Shepard without the option to malicously break their legs with a nearby crowbar?

It is always surprising to me how straight males automatically assume sexual attraction on part of every breathing living body that comes in contact with them. Of course all the gays want to bone them, and look at their asses in the locker, and secretly write love poems about them and hide them under their tear-stained pillows.

They do it with women as well. It's happened to me multiple times: I behave in a friendly way to a guy and next thing I know I need to do the whole "dude, lesbian. NOT that kind of lesbian, NO you can't watch" disclaimer because of course I couldn't be in the guy's presence and not want to get in his pants.

Sorry. Ranting.

Anyway. I really hope ME3 is everything they're making it sound in the marketing department, because it's really perfectly set up to be the most epic RPG series of modern times. Imagine if it beats sales records, wins awards and becomes inducted into the metaphorical gaming hall of fame, all the while being filled with delicious TEH GAY. (Of course, DAO already did that for classic fantasy RPG genre, but ME franchise has more dudebro fans, it will be a devastating blow to ignorance).

(Let's try that again) I don't ever bother to become sexaully attracted to anyone, because everyone is "out of my league" so to say.

About ME3 for what i've read and heard it sounds brilliant, I just hope it is.

Thank you!

This is exactly what I was thinking.

I was with this guys point right up until he said he would want to break the legs of any Gay who even remotely liked him or his Avatar in ME3. Then I was like "yeh overreact much you homophobic idiot?"

Honestly.

People playing a Str8Shep should get the option to say nicely "no thank you I am straight" to anyone who hits on him of the same sex of course; for example my "main" Shep is straight and with Liara (cos Liara makes me squee at how awesome she is) and if Kaidan came onto him (as an example) he'd be like "I like you Kaidan but I dont swing that way man."

I really hope there will be NO way to be mean to s/s people who come on to you. Just neutrally polite "I'm straight man, no dice." Nothing of that 'that's sick!' business.
