You may not need a tech but they will probably give you a Sentinel to replace Kaiden if you Virmire'd him like you get Vega to replace Ashley. Miranda will probably not be a permanent squadmate to be that Sentinel either.

Agree, many people actuall guess the second new squadmate will be a Sentinel in case you don't have Kaidan.

The point is Casey already said there will be "new LIs", in plural, regarding s/s ones, so it means at least 2.

Yeah, but that doesn't have to mean new characters, just new love interests. Joker or Kasumi or Mordin or whoever could reasonably be described as "new LIs" as well.

As for directness in the face of death, I am all for it, but mainShep has no doubt in her mind whatsoever that the Reapers are going down, so I think there's room for some hedging. Not every character is going to really believe it's the end of the world. (Ash and Kaidan didn't, in ME1. Ash in particular is very much like "lol we're not gonna die, you're Shepard." Of course she's a very direct person anyway, so.)

I'm guessing none of the ME2 squadmates will be permanent. Huge story and skill gaps if they're dead, otherwise.

Even assuming they do come back in a significant capacity, Bioware at the very least need to provide a core squad that contains all skills, if only so that people who killed everyone/most people on the suicide mission can have a decent team.

I'm indulging in utter speculation by assuming we'll get a vanguard and sentinel of some description, one each of male and female, that will (also?) be s/s options. One of them may be this enigmatic Vigilante lady.

Are the squad member skills really all that important? They were essentially walking gun turrets with occasional dialogue in ME2, and served little useful purpose besides making it easier for Shepard to do all the work. I can't say I ever found myself painfully lamenting my decision to not include someone with Overload in the squad.

It depends on the difficulty level and the proficiency of the player.  If you're new to Insanity, for instance, you might very well be hurting if you don't take Miranda and Garrus on shield-heavy missions.

I was hoping that they were fixing in this ME3, all signs point toward the game being more stratagetic. My hopes for the ME3 squad:

Kaidan-> Sentinel focusing on defensive abilities
   or
Ashley-> Soldier focusing on offensive skills
Vega-> Soldier focusing on defensive skills
Liara-> Adept for crowd control
Tali-> Engineer for all around Tech usage
Garrus-> Infiltrator focusing on damage
Vigilante-> Infiltrator focusing on debuffing
Jacob-> Vanguard with biotics more for damage
Miranda-> Sentinel focusing on debuffs

Although all of that is mostly wishful thinking.

I don't think it's necessarily a foregone conclusion that a "squad mate" is always a richer, more engaging character than a non-squadmate. I certainly feel like I had more meaningful interaction with Joker than I did with Zaeed, even though Zaeed had a Loyalty Mission and I could take him with me wherever I went. And I have much more of an emotional bond with Dr. Chakwas than half the people in the squad selection screen.

That wasn't really my experience, but sure. Given that the only enemy types that press their attacks (heavy mechs, praetorians etc) follow an asinine shoot-Shepard-and-only-Shepard tactic, wittling them all down with weapons fire worked just fine.

But yes, fair enough.

Agreed. Kelly surprisingly turned out to be one of my favorite romances, mostly because it actually felt fairly natural. All the other romances basically boiled down to "Talk-talk-talk-sex-calibrations from now on".

In ME2, you could play extremely defensively and make it through almost any mission.  It just took a million years.  In ME3, enemies are supposed to put more pressure on Shepard and his/her squad.  I foresee squadmates being a bit more important this time around.

As it stands, though, if you're going for optimal play (fast, efficient, flashy) in ME2, you will want to put some thought into your squad.

It felt like sexual harassment.

"Where's my hug, Kelly?  Huh?  WHERE IS IT?!"

Maybe it's different as a female Shepard.

Can't say it ever took a million years, either. Squad member overloads/warps/so on and so forth were painfully ineffective for the most part. Substituting them for anyone-plus-squad-ammo-of-some-description really wasn't much of a disadvantage. Neither Mass Effect game has put much importance on min-maxing, thus far.

But I should stop, since this hasn't really got all that much to do with s/s romances :(

I thought the whole Kelly side-mance thing was great, actually. Far more than the supposed 'true' romances, possibly as a result of it being player initiated, spanning the entirity of the game and... well. Neither of you are risking death in the process. It was going better until she showed up at Shepard's quarters wearing a skin tight rubber suit and flashing her butt cheeks, though. I had to facepalm at that a little.

Lol :lol:, fair enough. I don't know, maybe it was just the novelty of romancing someone who didn't have any major issues and had their life all squared away. People like Kelly seem like a rare thing in the Mass Effect 'verse where 3 people in a room had 9 serious mental issues.

I'll rage,  after being told over 9000 times that she isn't a woman, I want a 100% S/S female romance option.

I'm not opposed to more asari romance options (Shiala, plz), but they should not count as the only f/f options. We need human romances.

Eh. The problem with Kelly as a romance (my strong issues with her general writing aside) is the DA2 LI problem, only moreso: in order not to lock yourself out, you have to act like you love her before you even know her. The very first thing she does is ask you to call her by her first name. To be more precise, the first thing this gung-ho Cerberus stooge says to a potentially suspicious, furious, trapped and coerced by Cerberus military officer is "be my best bud and treat this like off-duty vacation." Follow the investigate options, and she then goes on to talk about how wonderful Cerberus is and how much she trusts and admires you, the likely enemy of Cerberus who she's never before met.

Respond to her in a way that's in-character for 99% of my Shepards, and you permanently lock out any chance to get to know her, much less romance her. If you tell her to be professional and that you'll be calling her Chambers, that's it. There's no organic way to actually get to know her: you have to decide you like her before your very first sentence.

The squaddie love stories may be more mechanical, but at least they're well-paced. (Pacing is a great fear of mine for ME3, actually. I'll feel pretty robbed if the new s/s LIs follow the "first nookie just before the end" pattern of the ME series, but I'm not about to give Vega a promise ring in the first dialog, either.)
