Eh. The problem with Kelly as a romance (my strong issues with her general writing aside) is the DA2 LI problem, only moreso: in order not to lock yourself out, you have to act like you love her before you even know her. The very first thing she does is ask you to call her by her first name. To be more precise, the first thing this gung-ho Cerberus stooge says to a potentially suspicious, furious, trapped and coerced by Cerberus military officer is "be my best bud and treat this like off-duty vacation." Follow the investigate options, and she then goes on to talk about how wonderful Cerberus is and how much she trusts and admires you, the likely enemy of Cerberus who she's never before met.
Respond to her in a way that's in-character for 99% of my Shepards, and you permanently lock out any chance to get to know her, much less romance her. If you tell her to be professional and that you'll be calling her Chambers, that's it. There's no organic way to actually get to know her: you have to decide you like her before your very first sentence.
The squaddie love stories may be more mechanical, but at least they're well-paced. (Pacing is a great fear of mine for ME3, actually. I'll feel pretty robbed if the new s/s LIs follow the "first nookie just before the end" pattern of the ME series, but I'm not about to give Vega a promise ring in the first dialog, either.)
This is true. I generally hold off on the actual conversation options until later for largely that reason. But then, at least she actually responds to how Shepard interacts with her, even if it's not all that appropriately. Meanwhile, in terms of actually progressing it beyond that first conversation or two, you do need to pick the more obviously flirty/romantic lines. There's tangible development. That Shepard's initial reactions either do or don't lock the player out of it for the entirity of the game is infuriatingly problematic, sure, and I'd obviously prefer if it didn't. I'm not sure how much that's a result of her being a sidemance though, not that it really matters either way, 'course.
The main romances bugged me. Of those I've tried - which I should obviously point out don't consist of all of them - half act as though they're in love with Shepard regardless of what he/she does to them, and the other half function on a "so, you've unlocked my loyalty bonuses. Let's bang" basis. Or a combination of both.

One may try to make that argument for the VS, but as I understand it, the VS is going to be available for almost the entire game. Plenty of time to develop a new s/s romance giving the standards set my ME2.
Characters introduced in ME1 will be available as bi options, including certain crew-mate(s) who don't go on away missions. The writer tweet someone posted a while back said there'd be no Krogan love, but he didn't rule out Garrus and Tali. Of course he was talking about romance in general and not s/s.
I can see the new guys and gals being available if they're around for the entire game because, I don't know, having someone available for just a mission and a tumble seems silly.

@Abispapretty much my thoughts. I think the Suicide Mission variable ruled out not only s/s romances but also huge involvement for most of the characters. Tali & Garrus will be available as optional major squaddies based on their popularity, but the rest will get LOTSB-like cameos/temprorary status. I mean, it ain't even just our speculation. They've sait it themselves few times they've deliberately kept Liara/VS out of ME2 and how Liara's lack of death makes her easier/more wise-economcally to implement as a major squaddie in ME3.

I have seen people support a loving relationship, all genders and orientations, and some who think lesbian sex with Miranda is HAWT, straight males and gay/bi women. The ones that try my patience are the ones that argue, seriously with apparently no sense of irony, that it is okay if Miranda "goes gay" but Garrus is a "bro" and would destroy immersion, Bioware and EA.
I say Jacob MIGHT be an exception only because I see him going bi IF Miranda does.
All you ladies and gay guys, c'mon and give my buddy some play, dammit!

My guess on Miranda is that unfortunately she won't even be a squaddie (maybe just for 1 mission) seeing how Ashley got Miranda'fied... Kinda don't see BW having two long haired brunettes in tight outfits in one squad.
I doubt many members will be available for more than 1 mission

Yeah... As great as equality among the squadmates was regarding the Suicide Mission, it pretty much automatically cornered BioWare's possibilities of using most of the ME2 squad in a big way in the next game. Especially considering they have to develop content for each one of them in the case of being dead scenario. Tali & Garrus most likely will be the optional perma/major squaddies solely due to popularity, but with everyone else we can hope for LOTSB-level of treatement at best. Some people say VS is the same, but it's really not. It's the simpliest variable possible (you get either Ash or Kaidan, just 2 possibilities unlike 11 possible dead characters out of 13 in ME2) and both characters will obviously take similar role in the story, even if with different dialogues.Jake71887 wrote...
