What is it with Garrus?!

Space Batman is much too manly to be gay.

(Not that Garrus is anywhere near enough of an alpha male douche to be Space Batman. He's Space Huntress, if he's any DC character. But of course female characters can't be archetypes, or something.)

I don't know, the more I hear the "NOT MY GARRUS!!1!" argument the less likely it seems he'll be tagged (it was a slim liklihood to begin with, of course), since BioWare isn't stupid. But at the same time, the more I hear it, the more I hope they will. I think I might be a bit of a troll. :?

My own personal theory:

1. Garrus is a grotesque alien monstrosity.
2. People seem to genuinely fear that bi-sexual romance interests will tear off their clothes and bellow "TAKE ME, SHEPARD" during every conversation. And possible during combat, or whilst they sleep.
3. Garrus is a grotesque alien monstrosity.
4. Chances are good Kaidan is dead in their playthrough, and Vega is new and thus more easily ignored.
5. Garrus is a grotesque alien monstrosity. I mean, look at him.

IDK, I think he looks kind of cool. He's a big talking dinosaur with fancy facepaint.

Needs to get that thing off his face, though. It's been months, dude, and like you said, women like scars. Lose the bandage.

Characterwise Garrus is o.k., if it wasn't for that whole bird / dinosaur look, I would probably go for him. They should have modeled the Turians after cats.

Something like that

Can it wait for a bit, I'm in the middle of some grooming.

I would be all over him!

I was thinking this as well.

But then, there's never, as far as I know, any "OMG Thane NOOOO!" or "OMG not my bro Jacob NOOO!!" or "OMG Zaeed NOOOO!" posts around.

It's Garrus. Always. Every. Single. Time.

I'm just... a bit mystified. What is it about the character that resonates so strongly with some people? To the point where he's (in many cases) literally the first thing that pops into their head when s/s romances are discussed?

He's the ultimate 'bro' of Mass Effect.

ElitePinecone, another thing to consider is that even the s/s supporters would be at least mildly shocked if Garrus is an option. IF IF IF Bioware made him a s/s option, that would TRULY symbolize that the days of s/s LI options being restricted to a few token characters are over.

It's my understanding that Thane is not generally well-liked by anyone but the (largely female) players who romance him. He is after all the Carth of ME2. Jacob is not just not well-liked, but actively disliked, he's the fanbase's favorite whipping boy. Zaeed... no one actually thinks Zaeed is going to be a love interest.

But Garrus... the dudebros love him, but BioWare let the women date him. It's ominous, I tell you. Ominous.

My life is now complete. Yes, he does.

Though, I'd have to play ME3 twice if I could m!romance both Kaidan and Garrus.

Did not one of the Salarian workers Thane saved send Shepard an email that had some s/s undertones in it? I found that odd since Thane was not a s/s option and I thought that Salarians do not have a sex drive like most of the sapient races do. Or maybe I just read too much into it.

Although they are not as loud as Garrus s/s critics the Tali s/s critics can be pretty mean in their opposition even though they are not as numerous.

From what I know both Jack & Thane were planned as s/s LIs and that's why both have homosexual undertones (Jack with her history, Thane with the letter). As for the letter itself, I've heard it's a homage to some fan from BSN who was like SUPER excited for Than since day 1. But I wasn't here then so I'm only saying what I've heard about.

Oh, certainly. I wouldn't use the option, but if people want it in there I'd have no problem with it at all.

But the chances of it happening are so remote as to be nonexistent... even apart from the fact that ME2 characters most likely can't be reromanced, the fan reaction would be (as we've seen) loud, vicious and probably contemptuous.

Which makes it even more baffling that people are so paranoid about Garrus being an s/s option. If even most supporters think it's impossible, what on earth are they worried about? Is it an irrational grasping at the worst possible outcome in order to demonise the whole thing?

I think that Garrus and Tali are more likely to be s/s options than the ME2-only characters because Bioware has indicated that both characters will be available for most of the game. I would not be as shocked as Abispa if they were available nor would I be surprised if they are not.

I honestly think most fans will not care either way. Even fans who may not like s/s at all probably will just roll their eyes and keep playing if they bother to try any romances at all. Those who will demonize s/s will never be happy anyway unless Bioware gets rid of the option entirely or at least makes a "gay toggle."

Hi. Don't take anything I say as an insult. I don't mean it that way.

Disclaimer provided, I feel like my relationship with Garrus is the best kind of friendship. Close enough to die for him and distant enough to avoid awkward, for me, situations.

For me he is, and I hope always will be, a platonic, bro hug, kill counter competition, drinks on the citadel friend. We're like Gimli and Legolas.

I would imagine that people's reaction, like mine, is based solely on instinct. We don't think about it, we don't want it, but nevertheless it's there. It's such a base reaction that higher thought processes don't reach it.

I'm not against gay romance. Just not Garrus... Anyone but Garrus.

For me there's just something wrong with it that I can't fully explain. I could probably provide tons of analogies but never come close to encapsolating what it is about it that turns me off.

I'd still play the game, but something would be lost for me.

I can appreciate this totally... I might not understand it, but I can appreciate it.

Clearly Bioware does as well (they've brought him back in both games as a 'buddy' character). The chances of Garrus being a m/m romance options are almost zero. I think he's safe...

They're clearly aware of what the fans think about the character and I think it's certain that he'll be brought back as a squad member (temporary or otherwise), but nothing else.

I guess your attitude is similar to the idea that straight men and women cannot be very good friends because if they are close they must secretly want to sleep with each other. I will not come down on you too hard given the tone of your post but I must say that while that may be true for some men and women or homosexuals/bisexuals it should not be and I think it will help people as a whole if we can move past that.

In the case of Garrus I think the fear is unfounded. Garrus is a good close friend to female Shepard and their relationship is ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL to the Garrus and male Shepard relationship unless female Shepard makes the first move. Garrus does not even find female Shepard physically attractive. IF IF IF he becomes a s/s option I would expect Garrus to play it pretty much the same way. As much as I want a s/s Garrus I do not want him to become Isabela or Zevran.

As simple as it may seem, but I think Jacob and Kaidan are considered as being boring by many people. These two characters (especially Kaidan) tend to only talk with female Shepards intensely. That's why the straight gamers don't care about them too much. But Garrus also talk with male Shepard a lot about his beliefs and opinions and ,over the course of the game, male Shep is also able to persuade him to see the things from a different angle. That's why they care about him and don't want him to become bisexual (omg, he would flirt with Shepard suddenly and their favorite male group member wouldn't be as fantastic anymore as he was before he "turned GAY!!!". I'm assuming it's the letter inclued in the Shadow Broker's files.

I can't see any undertones, if that is indeed the right letter. His use of Siha, for starters.
