Gay romances don't influence any ratings, especially as tame as all romances will be in TOR. The Sims has gay sex, gay marriage, gay adoption, gay making out and everything else, stuff TOR will never have and it's not an easter egg of any kind but just a legitimate option and it's been rated T for ages and EA never had any problem with the rating.

They're not supposed to, maybe. Check out This Film is Not Yet Rated or the Celluloid Closet for insight into how well that theory translates into practice. I've never made exhaustive study of it since I consider ratings bankrupt to begin with and generally ignore them completely anyway, but somehow I doubt video game ratings are any more objective.

(The Sims gets away with it because it's the Sims. That franchise gets away with everything. I'm a little in awe.)

It's the sims...a copy of our lives...I guess you can put everything that happens in real life in the game, Mass Effect is focused on a storyline about a scifi future where everyone is about to get royally effed by an ancient race that uses an entire species to make their own babies...romance plots just adds more or less backbone to the protagonist, not necessary tho...now SWTOR being an MMO...you can say that you can...pursue a same sex relationship with a fellow gamer, since that alone is your prerogative.

It's less about being able to "pursue a same sex relationship with a fellow gamer" and more about "why heterosexual gamers can pursue a same sex relationship with a Bioware character and homosexual gamers can't?"

Equality, and all. I'm so spoiled, you guys.

Unfortunately, just like when you sign up to post on this forum and play Mass Effect 2, you have to abide by a terms and conditions. Those terms of conditions can contain a very loose interpretation of "vulgar and offensive behavior". Just like I can't say to you "Oh **** off you ****ing ****** you stupid-ass son of ****!" you may not be able to engage in "behavior that is offensive" which might be a homosexual relationship with another player despite the fact that you are paying x amount of money a month.

Obviously, I don't think this will be the case as it would be quite detrimental to Lucasarts and Bioware public image.

You could do it, as long as you don't go spamming it on trade chat that you are dating such and such, because then you will be offending people, that's when things start to get blue.

In related news, it was just confirmed there'll be no s/s romances in SWTOR. I'm really surprised. It's like, one step forward just to do one step backwards for BW

Well, that's helped me decide not to bother with the thing then.

I don't play MMO's but was going to try it out b/c it was BW/Star Wars but 'meh'.

Ditto here, I was going to pre-order the game with the birthday money I'd be getting Tuesday and and least give it a one month fair shake....but this news killed it for me.  If romances were to be included then SGRA should be in as well.  Way to cave in Bioware .  I don't buy the BS that they didn't know about either the demand or the fact the LA has a bad history when it comes to respecting the LGBT community.

Not sure why anyone is surprised.  After the SWTOR forums blew up last year with the whole "there is no gay in Star Wars" and moderators shut down every thread that tried to support inclusion, it was pretty clear which way the wind was blowing.  They tried to do some backpedaling when they realized how much they had pissed people off, but it always felt to me like it was just a PR band-aid.

The saddest part is that everyone will **** and moan, and then still go out and buy the game.  It's exactly like the homophobe gamers who say they won't buy ME3 if it has s/s.  We know they will.  And they know we will.

The worst part about that drama is that the moderator who said "there is no gay in Star Wars" got to keep his position.

Seriously? That is depressing. On the plus side of things, look how far we've come in such a short time. Yay progress!

Having just watched the interview where the producer confirms that there is no same gender romance, I am actually kind of angry. Not only did he not offer any explanation for it whatsoever, but responded so quickly with an almost smug and condescending demeanor. He then proceeded to talk about the 8 classes offered by the game as if that were the question that was asked. If he had at least made an effort to apologize or say why, I wouldn't be upset.

Well, when TOR fails (because it's not going to be able to stand up to the WoW machine) I hope EA doesn't take it out entirely on Bioware and close the studio. I want Bioware to be able to continue with it's other franchises (Mass Effect, Dragon Age... Hopefully even Jade Empire someday).

Edited the last line of the first paragraph out. Calling someone I've never met disgusting is disrespectful on my part and I'm better than that. :innocent:

Personally, I'm hoping that TOR will fail and go away. I'd much rather see a Mass Effect or even better a Dragon Age MMO, let's see them deny S/S in that.

I'm just tempting fate with that last statement aren't I?

I'm not going to say if Bioware doesn't include S/S romance options in future products I wouldn't buy the games. I don't feel any sense of entitlement towards them. However, because Bioware has included it in so many previous projects, if someone asks about it and they don't give a legitimate excuse for it's absence or at least respond somewhat apollogetically I am going to be disgusted.

Oh no, that's how I meant to sound. I love Bioware games too much to give up on them just because I don't get my way on something relatively minor and optional. But yes, I am with you on that last point. Some of these people are just... Urgh. :pinched:

I don't really know what to make of it. I didn't really get the impression of him being smug or demeaning - but it was a rather quick response. I hope they don't chalk it up to "time crunch" lol. That...is clearly an excuse. But it is an excuse to avoid controversy.

However, I never knew there could be s/s romances in an mmo.

Apparently player characters will be able to romance non-player characters.

Eh, swtor looked okay but I had little intention of buying it anyway since I avoid subscription services after a little fiasco with Xbox live. Hearing news like this, however, really does not help me change my mind.

Not to dampen any (legitimate) disappointment, but it's more likely that LucasArts, rather than Bioware, had a hand in quashing any planned s/s romances with NPC characters.

As owners of the IP, and one of the publishers, LucasArts has a lot of creative control over their product. As we've seen, they're reluctant to allow or promote s/s relationships, and hundreds of books, movies and games have produced maybe three non-heterosexual characters in total.

I wouldn't blame Bioware for something that isn't their universe. I certainly wouldn't be hoping it fails dismally, because if it fails then the tens or hundreds of millions that EA has invested in it turns to dust. It's frankly absurd to wish that sort of misfortune on a publisher (and, by extension, Bioware) just because they do something you don't like. If SWTOR does make a lot of money, that's all the more profit that EA can reinvest back in its franchises like Mass Effect or Dragon Age.

The only SS relation we got in a previous KOTOR game was Juhani, right? And remember how butchered that was? Lines seemingly cut out haphazardly and nonsensically.
Bioware seem to be more liberal with their own titles. Mass Effect is the only recent one to lack the option (if you want to ignore the Liara option). Though only in implementation. They seemed to have planned for it, going by all the unused dialogue (not only for ME1 but continued for ME2. Even the Kaidan and Ash meetings) but got cold feet. Welp, at least it's being rectified in 3.

So, back to ME.

Some friends and I were talking about Kaidan's headache. I sugested that hot gay sex would be great for him. One of them said it wouldn't.

Opinions?
