I don't like this concept. I actually think that Isabela wasn't flirty enough. The same way Jack's tattoos say something about her, a character making the first move say something about him or her. If the player don't want to pursue a relationship, he should simply say "no".

Haha, it is ridiculous how hard it is to sleep with Isabela. Why, of the four love interests, she's the easiest one to fail at getting into bed, is a perpetual source of bafflement and amusement to me.

I don't know. Generally I agree with you; if it's in character, that's how the character should act (even if it does mean I avoid the medlab like they're breeding plague in there). Though this is definitely a place where the system could benefit from other checks (P/R, or the friend/rival system) to make sure that it actually is, in fact, in character for a given character to hit on you (I will never understand why Carth was so fascinated by my Sith!Revan). I tend to think that anyone in the audience who whines about it is just whining for the sake of it, and will just resort to the Suicide Mission/Zevran Murderknife solution BioWare always helpfully provides rather than actually not buying the next game.

I'm not sure how much I want to encourage that behavior in the fanbase, either, though.

Agreed about isabella. After a few playthroughs I finally decided to play as a mage hawke, and I had not yet romanced Isabella.

Woe is me, after getting halway through the game I was wondering why I was only getting friendship convo's with Isabella despite all my flirting... Turned out I missed some specific dialogue and had to restart the game.

Edit: I have to ask though, does Tali really ninjamance? I never knew that.

Yeah, although you are forwarned by Kelly though. In fact, I find it hilarious that Kelly basically told my male Shepard that Tali is going to spend the game trying to get into his pants, otherwise I would have assumed that Tali was just being quirky in a Quarian sort of way until she spills the beans after her Dad died.

The sad part is that Tali LOVES her some male Shepard EVEN IF he spent the entire first game treating her like crap.

That's it! Ninjamance by proxy! Just imagine the possibilities!

ASHLEY: Hey, Shepard.

Male SHEPARD: What?

ASHLEY: I think Vega liiiiiiikes yoooooou! *Singing* Shepard and Vega, sittin' in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g! First comes love, then comes marriage, ruining immersion an' startin' a BSN flamewar barrage!

Just replayed Jack's conversation about not letting people close. Can I just say - completely ignoring the question of what it means about her, specifically - can I tell you all how much I love the way she says "a boyfriend, or a girlfriend" like there's absolutely no reason Shep wouldn't ask about or assume either?

In the vast churning sea of heteronormativity that is Mass Effect, it's absolutely amazing how much that one little moment does to make me feel acknowledged as a customer BioWare actually wants. I can only pray the actual romances in ME3 are as casual and natural.

For the sake of pragmatism I have to support player initiated romances rather than being approached by LIs.

I support this, for all romances. It was annoying playing FemShep and trying to just have a conversation with Kaidan and having to pick the renegade options ALL THE TIME to avoid getting all flirty (and even then, sometimes the renegade choice was flirty).
Not sure if it's the same with ManShep and Ash, but jeez, Bioware, not all women are like "zomg cute boooooyyyys:wub:"

Agreed.

I don't want to play my dude Shep and wonder why he keeps getting harassed by his co workers. It's annoying.

It's a great little detail, especially when everyone else assumes your Shep is 100% straight.

Hopefully we'll see someone like that in ME3 who isn't "troubled".

I had the biggest grin on my face when I first heard that line. ;) It's just so nonchalant and wonderful, she doesn't skip a beat on delivery and it made me feel so nice.

The Nef line doesn't exactly fill me with confidence, though. I replayed it the other day and it's clear the 'freak' dialogue was because Morinth was female, not because she was an asari.

I was honestly going to say that Jack's line made me happy and *almost* makes up for Nef's in my original post but I figured everyone might be sick of hearing me b!tch about that one bit of dialogue. :P

Nef's line was clearly homophobic, but there are other "subtle" ones that I'm sure that Bioware didn't consciously want to convey, such as the Asari, a race of space lesbians, setting up a cultural taboo against themselves and always seen with males of other species.

I understand that the reason is that even though this is the distant future, it is a game written by people living in the real world. That's why s/s is still considered a big deal in the ME universe, and why Asari and Turian police sound like they walked off the set of Hill Street Blues.

I'd call it unfortunate, probably misguided, but certainly not homophobic.

There was clearly no malice intended, to me it reads like the writer wanted to create the journal of a troubled and vulnerable woman open to Morinth's charms.

It was a poor choice of words but I don't think they meant anything by it.

I'm also sure they didn't mean bad too. However, is the ME clearly biased in heteronormative male fantasies and subconscious views on some things? Yes.

I agree about the player initiated romance, as long as it is MY choice, not the writer's. As femshep I couldn't talk to Jacob without every response sounding full of (unwanted on my part) sexual interest. I just wanted to get to know the man better to see what his character was like.  The renegade option actually made me cringe in that first convo.

As long as it's the player's choice, Shepard should be able to love anyone he/she chooses.

Yes they are. I <3 stoics. I'm emotional enough for several people don't need more.

Which is probably why I have the most epic fangirl crush on Adam Jensen from Deus Ex : HR

If it's not too much trouble, could we try to refrain from using words like "heteronormative"? It reminds me of the way some people with aspergers choose to refer to people without aspergers as "neurotypical". There's definitely a negative connotation to it, like somehow being gay or having aspergers makes someone a better person because now the "normal" people have labels, too!

Funny how the Prayer in ME3 forum now says this:

"Now well off the Mass Effect subject, so closed.

LOCKDOWN!

Image IPB"

Even though this forum has gone off the Mass Effect subject quite a few times. <_<

Actually, it's not so much been derailed as much as, well, moved on to compare other things TO the Mass Effect series.
Personal experiences? Yes. Off topic? No.
Other games? Yes. Off topic? Not according to me.

You see, it's not all about ME-1 and ME-2, or mentioning anything Mass Effect related in every post. It's a discussion concerning things we'd love to see, love to experience in upcoming games.
Mentioning personal experiences helps produce ideas and we move on to putting them in Mass Effect context and then we go "Oh, I'd love to see something like that."
The same goes for comparing other games and scenarios with the Mass Effect world.

It's not quite off-topic. We're just tumbling into abstract-o-ville from time to time.

Okay, there's also a slight possibility that closing the thread and opening up a second one might just be too much trouble/completely unnecessary.

My thing is, other than the trolls and haters purposely trying to cause agruments, the forum was moving just like this one. Should this one be Locked. NO. But neither should've the other.

Overall, I can't say my opinion really matters, and I don't have any idea what I'm talking about, but I'mma come up with a theory.
I don't know which thread you're on about, since I'm mostly keeping an eye on this one, but I'm willing to bet that we're not somehow "the mods' favourites" or somesuch, if that's what you're implying.
It could have something to do with the general attitude of the thread that was closed, its subject matter or previous actions of those involved and whether that influenced a moderator's decision or not.

I would suggest that you take it elsewhere, though, as I don't think this belongs in the S/S thread.
But really, though, speaking of general attitudes and this thread, gosh-darnit, you deserve medals, most of you.
(I say most because I don't want to get sued)
*claps*

I am also sure that they meant nothing by it... as, you know, it's a character. A character whose words and thoughts do not necessarily symbolize those of the writers. If that were the case, we could assume that BioWare writers think that all humans are racist and that asari calamari recipes are cannibalistic.
