he was surprised because in a prior conversation, Shepard assures him that she's interested in him and rumors about her and Liara are just that - rumors.  you cannot get the confrontation scene otherwise.  so of course he's surprised.  he thought Shepard told him differently.

I think it's the prior conversation that I was referring to.  You may have to not deny the rumours to get the response I'm thinking of.

heh.  pretty sure the only time he outright shows surprise about Shepard and other women is during confrontation.  if you confirm your interest in Liara, he says something about crossed signals - which is not the same as surprise at Shepard's interest in Liara, but rather admission of misunderstanding Shepard's intentions towards him.

No. If you say to him "I saw her first (Liara)" as a FemShep, there's a pause that couldn't be more distinctive before he says "They do say Asari are into that sort of thing". And you get that convo even without any romancing/flirting with Kaidan prior. So yeah, he is surprised FemShep is into girls.

huh? I didn't have that option with fem shep. only the "are you interested in her?" option. o.O the other option was male shep exclusive in my game...if I remember correctly.

that's what I remember as well.  its possible that the other option is part of the "recording all lines is easier then trying to separate gender exclusive Shepard lines" deal.  so gender bender femsheps would get that.  but just in case, I have a save on Therum, on femsehp that's locked out of the romance, so I'm going through a quick refresher.  my god, the mako is some much worse after playing ME2 exclusively and getting used to touchy controls of the hammerhead

You don't get that option - "I saw her first" -  with FemShep every time and I haven't done any empirical studies on this, but I think you only get it, when you make it unmistakeably clear your are not interested in Kaidan or put differently, when you are not nice to him.

Kaidan has FemShep-exclusive "They do say Asari are into that sort of thing" response to "I saw her first". He obviously reffers to the fact Asari are into human females.

ok, played through, and that's what I get for mostly playing paragon, especialy when it comes to romancing Liara  - I miss some interesting dialogue :P. however, it didn't really sound like much of a "omg, she's a lesbian, wth!" to me, more like acknowledgment and a nod.

I don't know why people keep on trying to find proof that ME world and/ its denizens are homophobic. pretty sure Nef is the only questionable instance and even then, it could be due to her being generally sheltered.

Ohh I agree with that, but that distinctive pause sure was representing a surprise. Just because he was surprise doesn't mean he has anything against lesbians, just that he didn't think Shep was one.

Well, I personally wasn't trying to prove he is/was homophobic, just that he assumed Shep's sexuality to be a certain (straight) way  Image IPB

I wasn't trying to imply he was homophobic, only that he apparently didn't know. In the context of the discussion about Shepard "coming out".

Am I the only person who actually likes driving the Mako? I just wish planetside environments on the uncharted planets were more interesting and less barren.

The whole Eden Prime beacon thing is another not so subtle bit of presumptive heterosexuality on the part of the devs. Why not set up a system where you can pick which squaddie gets too close instead of always picking the o/s member.

*Shep checks out the beacon*
-> "Let's leave that thing to the eggheads, Chief." -- *Ashely gets curious anyway*
-> "Don't get too close to that thing." -- *picks one of them at random*
-> "Does it seem active to you, Alenko? Better stay back." -- *Kaidan gets a bit closer*

By the way I am not implying that picking Kaidan should be the renegade option. <_<

Wow, 400 pages. You guys are really committed. Congratulations; I hope you all enjoy Mass Effect 3's romances, and find the s/s options fulfilling.

And yeah, I really like the Mako too. Especially after driving the Hammerhead.

Yes,
there are some dialogue lines which are sensitive to how much your Shepard
talks to potential LIs.

For example, this is how the post-Feros conversation can play out if your male
Shepard is interested in Ash:

(I)

Sara: Oh, before I go... You said you're serving with Commander Shepard now? We
saw him on the news here... He's cute. Later sis'.

Ashley: Tell me you didn't hear that.

And then you have three options to answer: (P) Sorry; (N) A relative?: ®
That's unprofessional.

And when Shepard asks Ash her opinion on the mission:

Ash: A little spooky how you handled that Jeong guy. Didn't figure you'd know
how to speak corporate.

Shepard: ® All you do is shove a stick up your ass and care more about money
than people.

Ash: That would be a waste of a fine ass, sir.

If you barely talk to Ash, this is how the conversation can play out:

(II)

Shepard: Do you have a few minutes to talk, one-on-one?

Ash: Sure. I was just watching some mail from home.

Sara: Oh, before I go... We saw Kaidan in a news vid about the Normandy. He's
cute. Later sis'.

Ash: Let's pretend this never happened.

And then you have FOUR options to answer: (Left option) Kaidan, hm?: (P) Too
late; (N) A relative?; ® That's unprofessional.

And when Shepard asks Ash her opinion on the mission:

Ash: A little spooky how you handled that Jeong guy. Didn’t figure you’d know
how to speak corporate.

Shepard: ® All you do is shove a stick up your ass and care more about money
than people.

Ash: Painful! Think I'll leave that to you. No offense.

In the first scenario, it's clear the game assumes your male Shepard is into
girls. That's why Shepard catches Sara gossipping about how cute Shepard is,
and Ash praises Shep's ass.

In the second scenario, the game assumes that your mShep may not be into girls.
Shepard catches Sara gossipping about how cute Kaidan is, Ash makes a snarky
comment on Shepard shoving a stick up his ass, and Shepard has one more option
to question Ash about her interest in Kaidan (as if he were jealous).

So I agree with elektrego. You don't always get the "I saw her first"
option with FemShep because she has previously showed interest in Kaidan.

You're welcome.

I even recorded the conversation I marked with (II) because Ash's remark made me laughed.:police:  Too bad I don't have access to my YouTube account anymore.

It's indeed hilarious, but also an actual in-game example when the topic of ManShep preffering something other than sex with women is actually hinted at.

Yeah. It's one of several of them.

I want to point out that I have an Xbox 360. These lines don't come from a modded playthrough.

Heh. Sure, that would work. By ME3 Shep's probably got a half a dozen unauthorized biographies of varying accuracy floating around, it makes sense that a well-meaning idiot fan like Conrad could pick up some misinformation. And given they let you shoot him in ME2 I have no fear that Shep's permitted reactions to his ignorance wouldn't cover a wide enough spectrum to accomodate my varying Sheps.

Still not something I feel a need for, as I share the general consensus that making Shep's sexuality not even a thing is ideal, but it is something I can see being done well and being entertaining to play through.

And I totally love the Mako.

Love it :police: I don't remember it personally, it's been at least a year since I've played ME1 and I don't know if I actually ever picked the convo taht would get me to that line, so I need to find it on YT :D

I'm afraid you won't. Whenever I tried to find this post-Feros conversation with Ash, YouTube Shepard turned out to be interested in her. :?

Well, to be fair to the devs, in Mass Effect (and its sequel), presumptive heterosexuality as regards to romance option wasn't just presumed, it was the only thing offered. It wouldn't have made much sense to rescue Ashley as a female Shepard if there was no romance path for her...

But I agree: it was obvious that scene was constructed to be the first entry point for romances; here's hoping in future they make them less railroaded...

Actually, just on that, it's entirely possible the scene from the New Yorker magazine people have been posting here is the equivalent 'rescue Ash/Kaidan from beacon' scene for ME3.

The ME3 scene in question had Hale recording "Let him/her go" in a range of tones, and the piece mentioned that the conversation would affect how Kaidan/Ashley interacted with Shepard over the course of the game.

Just food for thought,

I don't care what else you said or what you were talking about...but the fact that you posted Beyonce...<3

Damn, but this thread does show that there are potentially dozens of people capable of proof reading all the romantic dialog in a Bioware video game. Maybe Bioware should check out this thread if they're hiring.

Since I grew up loving remote controlled vehicles, I'm a big Mako fan as well, though I admit that trying to climb the mountains in some of the Geth controlled planets actually gave me motion sickness and forced me to vomit, something even a case of malt liquor isn't able to do to me.

And we can never have enough pictures of Beyonce.

Just food for thought,

I always hope to have more options for doing the same thing in RPGs. Not just a Paragon option to promise to help someone, a Renegade option to tell them to shove off and a neutral option to be non-committal. I'd like to be able to reject someone politely or impassively as well with a verbal smackdown. I'd also like to be able to do the opposite and promise help while making it clear I think they're an unmitigated idiot. It might make the dialogue wheel more complicated and I'd like to see DA2's use of politeness/sarcasm/aggressive tones. I haven't played it yet.
