Sad. Intresting when we will know this.
Probably not until the game is released. Bioware have said they want to keep it as a surprise, of sorts.

That was a major criticism I had with DA2. We knew everything about every party member well before release, including their romantic proclivities. I'd much rather just be surprised by the game.
This was because there was a lot of arguing on the forum about the subject.
In recent years the wildly bisexual rogue elf, broody elf, and ****ty bisexual rogue has become something of a trope in games and in wider media (literature, tv, movies) and given the general belief that Isabela was Bisexual and Anders was straight then it was looking like we were getting the whole trope thrust at us in DA2.
A lot of people (myself included) felt we already had the bisexual elf character, and wanted something different.
Which resulted in the "they are all bi" announcement.

Been lurking around here for a bit while I played catch-up game-wise with everyone. I'm a late (actually, very, VERY late) bloomer regarding the ME franchise so have been playing my first run-throughs of ME and ME2 pretty much non-stop for the past two weeks. Finished ME2 yesterday and am working on the DLC's now.
My MShep was modded to romance Kaidan in ME and stayed true to him in ME2. That being said, I would like to know if a modded Shepard might mess up the import option for ME3 now that s/s romances will be a part of the game. If anyone has any info on this it would surely be appreciated.
Muchas gracias!

Greetings, all!
Maybe it will mess things up. We won't know till the game's released. Just to be safe, you should have 1 save without modded MShep.MageTarot wrote...

It's incredibly unlikely. What's most likely to happen is what happened in ME2; the dialog flags will simply check to see if your Shepard is in a romance with Kaidan, and respond with the appropriate lines and animations. Some or even most of those lines may not have lipsynch and Meer audio files associated with them, though, so you'll just get a silent Shep bobbing his head and have no idea what the line is unless you turn on subtitles. (Like the way Horizon plays out fine with a hacked s/smance, but the Joker conversation after lacks the voiceover for the paragon response. Or the way a femShep will be mute in a hacked Tali romance.)
That said, I agree with Isaac that it's a good idea to have a spare unhacked Shep on hand just in case. (If for no other reason than you may end up liking the new romance path more.)

I was just a bit concerned seeing that as I wasn't given a chance to romance Kaidan if I played ME unhacked and didn't choose a LI, the dialog path to start a romance with Kaidan in ME3 wouldn't be there.
We aren't even sure that Kaidan is an option in ME3. A few bits of evidence point towards him (and Ashley) being one, as well as some new characters, but we won't know for certain until the game comes out.
If Kaidan/Ash really are s/s options for Shepard, it most definitely won't need a hacked game to start the romance.

Kaidan and Vega (and maybe Ashley and Vigilante?) look like the obvious answer. Of course, there is no way to know until we play the game.

Playing ME1 with my gay Shep. Kaidan just described Rahna and went "I think you'd have liked her."
I... honestly would prefer that line even with my femShep who romances him. Stop comparing us to your ex-girlfriends, dudes. That is not actually sexy or flattering. And BioWare does it all the time.
I've discovered my current infiltrator has a thing for Miranda, by the way. That "all bi" thing is looking more and more appealing (though sadly never more likely

Miranda is at the top of my Shepard's list, and has been since my first playthrough, but I'm pretty much just bracing myself for disappointment there.
All bi would be so great. I have to admit I got a little spoiled by it in DA2 - it was so nice to at least have one game with that option. But now I just want more games to follow suit, and it just seems depressingly unlikely.

Yeah ... both of my "canon" (not sure if that's the proper term) FemShepards are lesbians, but my Soldier definitely has had a secret crush on Ash from day 1 but Miranda would be a much better match for my vanguard.Quething wrote...

I'm happy to see that just because this game is popular Bioware isn't going to stay away from same sex romance. Thank you for having some guts Bioware.
This is pretty much what it all boils down to. Thank you, Bioware! <3

I don't remember the exact wording, but one of the devs said on Twitter that only a few 'old' characters from ME/ME2 would be available to re-romance.

Yeah, I think this is probably the case, since you can make them die... though in my experience I had to look up how to make some of them die, and it's pretty easy to make everyone survive.ElitePinecone wrote...

There should at least be some sort of closure for the ME2 romances -- even if they end up dying at some point in ME3.

Oh, definitely. Bioware have said there will be - just today Mac Walters said they'd acknowledge any past romance Shepard had, even if the character had died (and obviously if they survived there'll be some sort of conversation).
But as for a 'new' romance with an 'old' character, all we've heard is that it'll only be available with some (i.e. not all) characters from previous games.
If I had to make an educated guess, it'd be that they were referring to Ashley/Kaidan being newly available for s/s. ME2's characters were available 'recently' (in game terms) for m/f romances, and it'd be slightly odd if Bioware went to all the effort to make all of them appear in game as m/f options (let alone s/s options - the task for six characters who might have died would be immense).
As opposed to the six ME2 romances, Ash and Kaidan are fairly interchangable (probably unfortunately so) and are comparatively easier, in my view, to justify as s/s. One or the other has to be in ME3 (whereas even with the temetry data Bioware can't assume that any ME2 character would be alive) and because of player choices and the way the default import for ME2 worked, only a very small percentage of ME2 imports into ME3 will have Ashley alive for femSheps and Kaidan alive for mSheps. If they wanted an ideal character to avoid controversy, A/K would be them.
Of course all that is just my speculation - and I'm probably completely wrong. But I'd tend to think new opportunities for romances (m/f or s/s) with ME2 characters is less likely than new opportunities with Ashley/Kaidan.
New characters, obviously, are guaranteed in some form - squadmates or random encounters.
