I feel no sympathy to someone who's trying to get involved in a series by starting out with the second game, particularly when the first game can easily be found for $5-$10.

LOL - You know, I originally picked up ME2 first but quickly saw the error of my ways. It wasn't until after I got ME and played it that I realized i would have missed a whooooole lot of backstory if I had started with ME2. I only wish ME was as mod-friendly as Dragon Age Origins. It would have made my maleShep romancing Kaidan a lot easier. I just attribute Kaidan calling my Shepard "ma'am" as a temporary flare-up of his L2 implant. Image IPB

Haven't come up with a reasonable explanation on why my Shepard magically grows bodacious ta-ta's during the final romance scene, though. Side effect from the beacon at Eden Prime, maybe? Image IPB

An unfortunate hallucination caused by too many unwanted mind-melds with Asari. Though it may have appeared otherwise, Kaidan was definitely nailing a dude. ;)

They've just announced over on the TOR forums that they plan to add gay
romances later on in a patch or expansion. Don't know why they couldn't
have said this ages ago instead of the blunt no but I'm still extremely happy. Just make sure not to read the announcement thread unless you've already lost your faith in humanity (it's really that bad).

I always just mentally changed the "ma'am" to "man" every time I heard it Image IPB Crude, but it got me through the game Image IPB

Beacon of gender changing? The protheans had those, right?

Yay! I've been ****ing at them all throughout the beta over the decision not to have any. Now I can feel like I affected this decision in some way despite knowing I didn't Image IPB

Shame we'll probably have to wait a lot of time for the expansion... that said, the TOR forum is on fire. People there can be very, very hurtful about same sex romances. I don't know if I should feel sad or amused.

The target audience is adolescent males with enough time on their hands to spend hundreds of hours on an MMO...

While not dipping into generalisations, I'd suspect they might not be so enlightened.

I might check out this news, I'm still undecided about whether to buy the game (MMOs really aren't my thing) but if the characters are done well enough I might give it a go.

Edit: I just glanced at the thread, wow. It got to 300 pages (3000 posts?!) in one day. That's... ridiculously fast.

I'm thankful that this forum isn't popular enough to get that kind of response, especially when so much of it is vitriolic. Or maybe Mass Effect just has a slightly more mature target demographic?

@Pinecone: I imagine it's the latter; the kind of depth that the ME series has doesn't appeal to the WoW crowd. Though I'm not sure it's much of an achievement; being more mature than the MMO kids feels a bit like winning the Special Olympics.

I'd be curious to know what prompted this. Did they see that there was a great deal of support for s/s romances? Or did they see how moronically homophobic people were being and put on their trollfaces?

Hello all, I'm up to page 230. So it will be a while before I reach the end so apologies if I repeat anything. I noticed that mass effect was 12 rated in the UK. Mass effect 2 15 rated and seems like Mass Effect 3 is 18 rated, or maybe it is just a place holder. Could this relate to S/S content, or mature topics. If this is true I will be happy to see it discussing more interesting and controversial topics. I am a supporter of S/S romance btw.

Reading a few of the dev responses it sounds as though they'd always planned it post-launch (along with a bunch of other content) but felt the need to announce it now because it was getting so much media and forum attention, most of it negative.

In a way I'm kinda dismayed that the announcement got that much attention (a dedicated forum thread) - it's more ammunition for people who argue, wrongly, that Bioware cravenly bow to every demand from the rabid homosexual movement (or any similar term). It'd be better for everybody if it were announced more quietly in a package of other content that's planned for future launch. Or at least not in a thread that has "we're trying to placate you, please don't yell at us!" written all over it.

We've seen it with Mass Effect: the forums raged for a few months after Hudson's announcement of S/S but aside from the occasional thread everything is much calmer now. The easily-outraged soon find other targets for their wrath, or else see that the s/s content is a tiny part of a much larger game.

Nice to join this forum and pleased to see such a warm community. Great YouTube video with Alenko and MShep with great music and editing. Firstly, I am typing from my iPhone so autocorrect and spelling may be an issue. I agree with a lot of opinions on here. In addition to the above comment if mine I would to say how nice it is to hear that Bioware have decided to do S/S romance. I think some are a little hard on Bioware, they have made great strides for S/S gamers and was really surprised to hear that they decided to go back on straight MShep. I thought they said he was straight in previous Mass effects but could be wrong. I do think that they are one of the most open minded developers in the industry and it's nice they have our backs. apologies for off topic.
On topic: I would like to see Alenko and Vega as MShep options. Be nice to see Ashley and liara as Fshep options. No interest in aliens as romance options myself ;)

good topic indeed... shepard, along with ANY main character in ANY game, should be able to romance anyone regardless of gender... choice is awesome... there should always be choice...

There was support, yes. If I'm not mistaken, we had... 6+ threads about s/s romance, with many posts. It's possible that they aways wanted to put it in, though.

And while I'm happy that we'll have our gay pixels - yes, I am shallow like that -, I can't help but feel a bitter taste in my mouth with all this situation. *shrug* I suppose I should just shut up and feel grateful.

It's already seemed to happen...(quicker then here I might add). Way more supporters then not.

There is no reason to keep it quiet. There is nothing "wrong" to hide. The only problem I see is those people who still cannot accept it. They are the real problem.

In general: Nor is there a reason for a toggle to switch off same sex romances because "some people see it as a problem". Again, the people who see it as a problem *are* the problem. They certainly don't need any hand holding.

I used to feel sad, but now I'm mostly amused since I remember that these anti-s/s whiners are merely a vocal minority and they're only making themselves look like fools by spewing the same irrational and easily defeated 'logic' over and over again.

Psst. I play both.

Fun as all this fabricated games-people-play-hierachy nonsense is, let's try and can the insults, hey? I ran into just as many idiots playing Rift, and I grew weary of this 'herp a derp only teenage boy losers play MMOs' rubbish a long time ago.

I never said "only teenage boy losers play MMOs," and I never said I or anyone else was superior to MMO players because I play ME. I said that MMO players are generally less mature than ME players. I framed it in an insulting manner, yes, and I didn't need to. I'm sometimes an ass. But it's not an insult to note that the average MMO player is less mature than the average Mass Effect player. And it's not an insult to either game. That's what happens when you compare a game that is made to specifically appeal to an older, more mature segment of the population, to a game that is made to appeal to as broad and as young an audience as possible. I took a rogue to level 60 in WoW. I get why people like the game and the genre. I enjoyed it, but not really enough to justify a monthly fee.

Let's not forget that there was a huge outcry on these forums, as well. Both forums seem to have calmed down a bit now, though.

So pish-posh, no one's "crowd" is somehow superior in intellect or patience. I suspect the SWTOR forums are just a tad more populated, is all, so the Stoopehd vs. Sense ratio was the same all along, they were just MOAR.

Anyway!
I'm somewhat glad that they're going back to "fix" this issue, but at the same time I'm sort of saddened that they didn't just do it from the get-go. This shouldn't have been a problem from the start.
Honestly, Bioware? Introducing homosexuality as a patch later on?
That just looks and feels very... iffy. In a way.

I suspect they anticipated idiots complaining, and were hoping that release would filter said idiots out of the forums, since then the forums would be geared toward the game, instead of just being a place on the internet to argue. Then they could introduce it with it being less of a big deal.

I can't help but feel like it's all an afterthought and that they are incredibly scared of upsetting The Heterosexual White Gamers, and as it looks like they are compromising so very much in order to not bruise anyone's ego, it's making them look bad.

It's the whole "one step forward, two steps back"-thingamajig.

Yeah, well...
I'm still annoyed that it's not entirely bug-free.
The IRL developers sawk, they have yet to fix the economy and there's an extreme lack of endgame content.

At least I got full control over my dialogue choices, well, not always actually, especially when it comes to romances, I can be a drooling idiot, too.

This is especially so in a thread dedicated to a character that, thus far, we've only been able to romance as mShep.

Well, yes. That's exactly my point. The Ashley thread assumes that Shepard is male, because most people who are into Ashley are into romancing Ashley and play mostly male Shepards. If you go to the Kaidan or Garrus thread, you'll notice the same thing; they largely assume Shepard is female, because they largely play female Shepards. (I imagine it's a bit chicken-and-egg whether they like that character and romance enough to be a thread regular because they play that gender or play that gender in order to access that character and romance; doesn't really matter either way).

However, if you go to the DA2 forums and hang out on the Merrill thread, or the Anders thread, they play every which Hawke. Some of their Hawkes are dudes, some of their Hawkes are ladies, it doesn't break down by thread in the least.

Because people tend to be fannish in ways as close to game canon as possible, and in DA2 a Merrillmance or Andersmance is every bit as canon with either gender. So fans of those characters are likely to consider Hawke every bit as canon in either gender.

As someone who sees both characters as female due to my own play history, the DA2 threads feel a lot more welcoming to me. They're talking about the same game I played. The Ashley thread generally isn't; they're talking about some Sheploo guy I've never met. It's like if this thread were half about s/s romance in the ME series, and half about characters from Fatal Frame. How interested in the conversation would you be if people were always talking about a bunch of names that meant nothing to you and posting pictures of characters you'd never played?
