I think the surveys about female s/s LIs is skewed for many reasons, one of which are the male players who enjoy role-playing lesbians (and I know a few personally).

I don't see what's wrong with their vote as they are players that do the f/f romances.

Okay, I don't play and DA game and I probably never will but what is up w/ this Merril chick? Why is she so popular? Is she an s/s romance or something?

All DA2 LIs are S/S.

And Merrill is awesome, that's what's up with her. Or a ball of twine.

I'm less interested in m/m but that's because either I'm not interested in them when they're het or the character in question pings me as straight. For f/f, it's simple. I prefer FShep and my favorite characters are women. I hate having to choose between playing my preferred gender and romancing who I please. But I don't feel the same urgency for m/m because I'm not that fond of my options in the first place, can already romance them with my preferred gender, and/or really don't see this character as gay.

That wasn't what I meant; it's fine to be completely apathetic and not care about a particular romance - I'm not interested in f/f, say - but acknowledging one's own preferences implies recognising others'. You might not care about m/m but you support the idea for people who do.

There's a difference between saying "well, I wouldn't take the option, but they can if they want" and "OMG LESBIANS are HAWT but gays are icky ewwww, Bioware should only cater for me and and put in lots of f/f".

In a way I find that more frustrating than simply being opposed to s/s romances full stop; at least there's not as much hypocrisy in total opposition.

I have no problem with their voting for their favorites either, I merely brought it up because I've seen several references to these surveys and many who post assume that these are choices that lesbian players want, not players who prefer female Shepard who may be of any persuasion. In my admittedly not so clear way I was saying that we cannot use the survey to guage either how many players are actually lesbians or what lesbian players, as a group, actually want.

The same assumption is made for m/m romances, too. So many assume that only gays will want to play m/m Shepard even though we've had many female players admit enjoying role playing as a gay male, and I'm sure there are male completionists out there who can actually play all the variations without having to yell out "No ******, bro!" repeatedly to reaffirm their masculinity.

I like Merrill too, but I've never really felt comfortable with her as a LI. LIke Anders and Fenris, she is so painfully isolated that I almost feel that she has no choice but to sleep with Hawke or remain forever celibate. I would feel better about her if the game had scenes or dialogues that at least hinted that Hawke isn't her only romantic option. At least Fenris will eventually hook up with Isabela if Hawke doesn't romance her.

Have you seen her banters with Carver, especially the one in Mark of the Assassin (assuming she isn't Hawke's LI)?

That's hardly a 'romance' though.

A surprising number of players seem to think it is. Fenris fans, even, who you'd think would know better.

As far as the polls go, I'll just toss in my meaningless anecdata: as a rainbow-plated ****** myself, I'd be happy to have Miranda as a s/s option. She's not my #1 (in order of want: Ash, Kasumi, Miranda, Jack; in order of "strikes me as obvious," Tali, Jack, Miranda), but I certainly have a femShep for her any time she's ready.

Beyond anecdata, I think part of the reason Miranda seems like she's got more s/s support than the other female LIs when the polls suggest all the women are about even, is that Miranda's thread, as mentioned above, is more s/s friendly. I've seen the flamewars in the Ash and Tali threads when some poor noob runs up against an established thread veteran's GET YER PERVY ****** HANDS OFF MY FAVORITE. It's not pretty, and I would be surprised to see many of those noobs stick around in that character's fan community on BSN, even if they do really like said character and legit want to pursue her with a femShep out of personal compatibility and not "lesbian" hawtness.

Making separate "[insert squadmate here] for s/s romance" threads seems a bit redundent (and a troll magnet, and it'd be locked by the moderators) - so I guess people just have to weather the storm of idiots or show support for their LIs in other ways.

I generally stay out of the character threads so I don't really know how bad it gets.

To be honest, I think that it is less about the gayness and more about the way they see the character. Hence the "I don't care if new characters are ... just don't touch the old characters" crowd.

I call it taking a character hostage.

When I first started posting on BSN I found out real quick how people do not like their characters being put in a different light. I never saw Liara as naive, innocent or virginal but I saw her as very careful (guarded), smart and a little shrewd when she needed to be. I got called a troll. It's not that the people were close-minded or evil it's just that I had somehow in their mind abused someone they loved. I have never minded that they see her in that sweet light ... it just never worked for me.

I've seen that happen alot on the board where people get really upset over the slightest things and sexuality has been the least of it. Change or a different viewpoint makes people nuts ... just look at Joker. Even him becoming a romance option for femShep has people screaming no ... "He's a cripple! He can't!" Image IPB

Ash lets her hair down .... "OMG! She's a hooker! WTF? Bioware has destroyed her!" Although I did find it slightly funny that men were talking hair down vs. bun. Who'da thunk that a game about killing reapers would have guys talking about a woman's hairstyle.

Change scares people and then like the birds on Finding Nemo a crowd gathers and you hear Retcon & Fanservice in place of the word mine. Once the game is released and (fingers crossed) people get back into their own stories, enjoy the new combat options, look in awe at the scenery, enjoy the music ... see their favorite characters and love interest, if any ... all will be forgotten.

But that is just how I see it which means that it is a skewed perception, crazy talk and I'm good with that.

I'll just join the birds ... "Mine! Mine! Mine!"

I cannot advocate deliberate trolling for any reasons.

I will make snacks though.

We wish to understand, not incite. I wanna know how Talimancers would feel if Tali was available to bother a male and female Commander Shepard. I can tell you I wish she was. The first time I played as FemShep I was bummed that I couldn't romance Tali because she was nice and sweet. I romanced Liara instead in LotSB, which was nice too.

Focus on the Ash thread, I've already got Tali one covered ever since I've noticed half of regulars in anti-s/s threads come from there.
Miaranda thread is very nice, the guys there are lovely
