Beyond anecdata, I think part of the reason Miranda seems like she's got more s/s support than the other female LIs when the polls suggest all the women are about even, is that Miranda's thread, as mentioned above, is more s/s friendly. I've seen the flamewars in the Ash and Tali threads when some poor noob runs up against an established thread veteran's GET YER PERVY ****** HANDS OFF MY FAVORITE.
Good point.
Making separate "[insert squadmate here] for s/s romance" threads seems a bit redundent (and a troll magnet, and it'd be locked by the moderators) - so I guess people just have to weather the storm of idiots or show support for their LIs in other ways.
I generally stay out of the character threads so I don't really know how bad it gets.
To be honest, I think that it is less about the gayness and more about the way they see the character. Hence the "I don't care if new characters are ... just don't touch the old characters" crowd.
I call it taking a character hostage.
When I first started posting on BSN I found out real quick how people do not like their characters being put in a different light. I never saw Liara as naive, innocent or virginal but I saw her as very careful (guarded), smart and a little shrewd when she needed to be. I got called a troll. It's not that the people were close-minded or evil it's just that I had somehow in their mind abused someone they loved. I have never minded that they see her in that sweet light ... it just never worked for me.
I've seen that happen alot on the board where people get really upset over the slightest things and sexuality has been the least of it. Change or a different viewpoint makes people nuts ... just look at Joker. Even him becoming a romance option for femShep has people screaming no ... "He's a cripple! He can't!"
Ash lets her hair down .... "OMG! She's a hooker! WTF? Bioware has destroyed her!" Although I did find it slightly funny that men were talking hair down vs. bun. Who'da thunk that a game about killing reapers would have guys talking about a woman's hairstyle.
Change scares people and then like the birds on Finding Nemo a crowd gathers and you hear Retcon & Fanservice in place of the word mine. Once the game is released and (fingers crossed) people get back into their own stories, enjoy the new combat options, look in awe at the scenery, enjoy the music ... see their favorite characters and love interest, if any ... all will be forgotten.
But that is just how I see it which means that it is a skewed perception, crazy talk and I'm good with that.
I'll just join the birds ... "Mine! Mine! Mine!"
