Here in America, some native nations actually suffered a 90 percent mortality rate when exposed to various European, Asian, and African diseases. The viruses acted the way the were supposed to, and would probably have faired better had they had the same history with those diseases.
How an alien virus would react to our system is a mystery since it evolved to deal with a different biolgy. The human body may not only be vulnerable, but may not even be able to recognize that it under attack by an organism, and the most likely reaction would be an alergic reaction, possibly even severe or fatal.
That's how I understood a NASA doctor's explanation, anyway. If I am wrong, or explaning it in too simplistic terms, feel free to correct me.
