You don't need grenades. All you need to do is rifle butt them unconscious and keep ploying through. Hell, I even made a renegade Shep go through without killing them (but still bashed them senseless for the fun of it). She could have knocked the villagers out if she was oh so paragon. She didn't because she didn't bother to show mercy on someone attacking her.
It wasn't one person. It was an entire village. An entire village of biotics that set upon her all at once. If she doesn't fight all-out she dies. It's as simple as that. And it doesn't matter that they were brainwashed at the time, they were still intent on killing her at the cost of their own lives if necessary. Ask any cop on riot duty what their worst fear is and they will straight up tell you that it is getting separated and surrounded by a violent mob.
Shepard has gotten into a similar situation before. In ME1 Shep's squad boarded a ship full of biotics to try and resolve a hostage situation only they had the foreknowledge that they would likely be attacked. Samara had no such warning. At least those biotics had all their faculties and could be reasoned with to the point that they backed down. Samara did not have that luxury.
*edit* anyway, this isn't the venue for this discussion. Nor do I define Samara as paragon or renegade. She only cares about whether the Code deems an action to be just or unjust. An argument can be made that the Code itself is twisted and there are certainly points to be made in that vein I would happily agree with. But I cannot agree to label the events we've been discussing as renegade without knowing a lot more about what happened. I can easily picture scenarios where that isn't the case. Scenarios which are vaguely reminiscent of things Paragon Shepard has done when left with no choice.
