@Pinecone: I realize that there will be other opportunities for romance besides a permanent squad member. I guess that's another assumption on my part that the new M/M romance would be one. Also, despite the backpedaling to "nothing is permanent in war", I am of the mind that there will be a core permanent squad, so I would prefer the new M/M option be given just as full a treatment as say, Ashley, or Garrus. If it's just gonna be scraps, screw it.

Agreed.  If it's not a fully-realized romance I'm going to be disappointed.  I don't want a male Kelly.

but if they are core members of the ship's crew and get exactly the same amount of interaction - I would consider it to be full treatment, personally. DA has a tiny bit of romance related banter outside of the home base, and it was mostly other squaddies making comments about the relationship. there's nothing that's preventing them from doing that about a relationship with non squad-mate IF this sort of banter will be added.

non squadmate =/= male Kelly

(yes I may be biased as there are couple of non-squadmates that I would love as romantic interests "cough" Joker" "cough" Emily Wong" )

Fair enough.  I'd prefer someone that joins you on missions, but I wouldn't be opposed to a romance with a non-squadmate, provided it receives as much attention as other romances.

@Fox: Yeah, I've seen that thread. But just to be pessimistic: the game isn't even out yet, and for a character we know so little about, he may have a huge fan thread full of S/S supporters, but the audience that Vega was designed for- likely the CoD/GoW audience- is painted more often than not as anti-gay. That's a generalization, but there must be some pesky truth to it, so the impression I'm getting is that the haters- and there would be haters- have yet to show their faces. I mean, there's not much to be a fan of right now, nevermind hate. His sexuality will probably be a larger point of concern when it's actually confirmed one way or the other. When there's actually a character to be a fan of, then it might cause some tremors, some lines to be drawn within the fanbase.

I don't like it, but there it is.

No, boys get toy soldiers, toy diggers and toy building equipment.

Indoctrinating them into believing they have to do certain types of jobs.

Don't act like this is only happening to females.

Both males and females are targetted from birth to believe certain things.

You've completely missed the point of my posts.

I never said boys aren't 'indoctrinated' or that just girls are targeted.

I am saying specifically that girls are targeted with things relating more to being a wife/mother (i.e., growing up to fit into that specific heteronormative role is pushed more on them).

Because no homosexual people have children right?

Okay, I'm all game for letting fr4eedom of speech run it's course, hell im a marine it's what i fight for, but you may be taking it a little to far, for i know that most statistics having to do with personal matters is bull**** because theres no way someone went around the u.s asking everyone there sexual prference, and you also forget the variables, like closetes people and liars and much much more, so if you want to under stand why it exist go study some biology, 'cause every one is born a certain way weither it's the "normal" way or the"different" way.

You can't know the exact number of gays of course, but estimates are useful and depending on the quality of the statistics, fairly reliable and repeatable..  And I already know why homosexuality exists.....which is why I neither hate or dislike homosexuals, despite growing up in an anti-gay environment.

And thank you for your service btw Image IPB

In the UK, conducted by HM Treasury and the Department for Trade and Industry, in 2005, they showed that 6% of the population was homosexual or bisexual.

This may change from country to country, but there's really no proof to show that it does change, but 6% seems to be the given number.

Because no homosexual people do any cooking, right?

"Right, because dem parents think "Ohh we gotta buy a builder's set so our son can learn how to build things to provide for his future wife & kids!"

Child indoctrination happens with everything.

Atheist parents indoctrinate their children into believing there is no God.

Theist parents indoctrinate their children into thinking there is a God.

Some parents raise there children in a gender-neutral way.

Other parents raise their children with traditional gender roles in mind.

Indoctrination happens. Is it bad? No. It happens to us all, throughout our entire lives, including childhood. We are all a product of our environment.

Will I complain that I was raised a Catholic? No.

Was it "wrong" that I was raised a Catholic? No.

Why? Because when I was old enough to decide for myself, I chose to stop believing in that and act the way I wanted to.

Just because you don't like traditional gender roles doesn't mean that those gender roles are inherently bad, or wrong.

They have served our species for quite a long time. Are they 'needed'? No. Should they be destroyed just for the sake of it? If you want to; fine, but there is nothing wrong with them.

More women are going into employment and university now than ever before.

You're not even trying.

Gender roles.

Traditions.

Expectations.

Beliefs.

They exist.

They're not bad.

Why? Because we're not slaves to them.

I already said so.

You're deliberately ignoring it.

This is getting well off topic. If this is not brought back to discussing Mass Effect, it will be closed.

Actually she played two romulans Taris and Toreth being the one you recall plus the pro-contact administrator in the TNG episode 'First Contact".  Apparently she was in two Voyager episodes playing a hologram , but I don't remember that much, just bit roles it seems.

Haha, yes. There she is! Dr. Chakwas deep undercover, I see!

Ahem sorry no one in my social group likes Star Trek so I go a bit overboard when I meet my fellow peeps!   But to bring it back around to Mass Effect a bit again I credit Star Trek with keeping me sane as I was struggling with my identity and coming out to people.  The first person I officially came out too was a friend in a PBeM Star Trek RPG.  My characters ended up being bisexual at that was a safe way for me to explore.  I could definately see Mass Effect playing a similar role for some young kid/teen which wouldn't be the purpose of putting s/s romances in but it's a nice bonus.

I completely agree. Every outlet helps, I'm sure. Mass Effect could be one such outlet. Its space opera setting is ripe to tackle all sorts of sociopolitical issues -- some of which it has indeed touched-upon and I love it for that. I'd love it all the more if it did this. :D

I would be curious to see Dr. Chakwas brought in as a LI, preferably as "bi." I would like to see how the age difference is played up and if it would be depicted different o/s or s/s. It is so amazingly rare to see a man in a relationship with a woman who is obviously his elder.

I'm not demanding it, but it could be nice. Especially since she and Shepard had one of the best scenes in ME2 together. But if not, I would like to see more of Shepard's friendship with her and the rest of the crew. Maybe a scene where Garrus tries teaching a clumsy Shepard how to calibrate those damn guns.

I've got my hopes set SO HIGH for this. A while back, Casey Hudson had a tweet that said something like, "You're going to have to play the game to find out who the new LIs are!" and I was all, "Aww, Casey, man, be cool! You pushed the release of ME3 back to MARCH, so at least give us something on Valentine's Day!"

Even if they don't tell us who will be available for same-sex lovin' (the Dragon Age team didn't specify when they revealed the DA2 love-interests, but I guess that was a subtle hint that they would ALL be bisexual?) I hope that they at least narrow down who is or isn't a love-interest before March 6th...

I think it's a bit of a false dichotomy to say that an LI has to be a squadmate or they'll end up with the amount of dialogue Kelly has.

Kelly was an afterthought, the last remnant of a planned series of crew interactions that had to be cut before release. If I remember correctly, Ken was also meant to be available as a casual fling for femSheps.

If - *if* - any new LIs are not 'permanent' squadmates, what's to say they won't have just as much dialogue as LIs from previous games? What's to say they won't be temporary squadmates, before staying at one location to help the war effort, or on the Normandy?

I'm just saying: people are immediately conjuring Kelly as the worst case scenario, when she was actually only half-developed in the first place. If Bioware were going to do a non-squadmate romance, they'd want to do it right.

It's still over four months before release, we have *a lot* of information to find out before any of this speculation gets remotely close to what might be true.
