From what I have seen the "nicer" Morrigan is the same whether you do it through friendship or romance. If you are a woman you are her "sister" but if you are a man you are "my love." In Witch Hunt she offers the male a chance to run away with her but I found it forced and stupid and secretly hope she dumps the naive dummy off somewhere in the Fade on her way back home. Let Liliana find his dumb ass.

I only take the "rough childhood" excuse so far myself. I have had a rougher time than many of the "bad" people I have known in my life and I know plenty of people with truly horrific childhoods who are far more angelic than I can ever dream of being. Does Undina, Saren or TIM get a pass if their daddies never hugged them enough when they were children?

As for the LIs themselves I have always gotten the feeling that most of the females LIs are written as LIs first and then given a role to play in the adventure and that the male LIs are designed with specific roles to play in the game and then assigned a dead lover or sister to make them sympathetic and ready for romance. Maybe I am reading to much into it but that is how it strikes me.

To be honest I find myself shuddering at the thought of the rumored gay male LI in ME3 being a widow...

Everyone is stark, raving gay in ME3. Bioware has relented to critics and promises that the oft requested "gay toggle" will be available for those who want a "straight" ME3. The ME Gay Toggle DLC will be available two days after the game's release for the low, low price of $39.99.

I always felt the opposite..it seems the female LIs tend to have bigger roles in the story (especially in Mass Effect).

Dragon Age is pretty equal in this, though (Morrigan and Alistair were important while Leliana and Zevran weren't...Anders and Isabela were important while Merrill and Fenris weren't).

Word.  I totally agree with this.  Miranda is the one who essentially rebuilds Shepard so she is essential.  She's also an incredibly useful squadie.  Jack and Tali both fill specific rolls in the suicide mission and seem to fit the notion of team member a bit more due to their specializations (sure there's Legion and Samara, but Legion could be given to Cerberus, Kasumi is DLC therefore Tali is THE tech specialist)  While I really like Jacob he just doesn't have much space in the narrative as far as function...he's just there to deliver the prize. ;)  I mean what does he do other than help Shepard escape?  Thane, don't get me started on Thane (sorry not a big fan AT ALL).  Garrus fits in somewhat, but in comparison to the girls, not as much.  Liara's importance goes without saying, and Ashley was given prominence in the marketing.  Poor Kaidan's just an afterthought in most play throughs.

Dragon Age does a much better job of equalizing the female PC and her respective potential romances.

Huh? Are you kidding? Is everyone suddenly gay/lespian now if you chose? Doesn´t make sense. I mean, it was genious in DA2 because they are new characters and it was well written into the story. But suddenly all the ME characters have a mid-life sexual orientationcrisis doesn´t seem right.

Edit: Haha, you where kidding. Sorry. Stupid me. Been reading for the exams like crazy. Biology all fuzzing in my head.

I am not a Miranda fan. I state that as an opinion (not fact) and allow that you probably disagree. She does not rebuild Shepard. Wilson did. She DID keep Shepard from being a "failure" after the SB bribed Wilson but there is nothing in the game that indicates that Jacob could not have figured out that Wilson was fishy on his own. The best that can be said about her in a squad is that she is a mediocre biotic with overload.

Jacob is ESSENTIAL to ME2. Why? Because if it were not for Jacob Cerberus had absolutely NOBODY that could have convinced Shepard that Cerberus was not just a terrorist organization. He does not make excuses for the organization like Miranda does. He is a former Alliance soldier who does not trust TIM showing Shepard that it is possible for TIM to work with someone who does not tow the Cerberus line.

Jacob opens to the door to the possibility that not all Cerberus operatives are exophobes bent on human domination of the galaxy. As the only high ranking Cerberus operative who is not white he helps (a little little bit) to dispell any notion that Cerberus is probably racist. You may not have noticed but the humanity depicted in the Cerberus episode of ME was a huge white wash.

As a LI Jacob does not need Shepard to save him or fix him. He allows Shepard to vent the only time in the series outside of the LotSB DLC. He does not ninjamance you or offer "the prize" unless you decide to pursue him. But most people think he is boring so now I am afraid Vega is going to be another Carth.

Miranda starts out talking tough (Yay!) but then starts talking about her low self-esteem issues right off the bat on the Normandy (Huh?). She defends TIM and makes excuses for every crazy Cerberus operation throughout the entire game and then out of nowhere quits Cerberus at the end or chastises Shepard if s/he saves the Collector base (What?).

Jack was insane and WAY over the top and could have been replaced by Jacob or Grunt (until the end) or Samara/Morinth (whole game). She always struck me as a girl hanging around to be saved. Big neon sign. Over hear head.

Thane makes... some people happy. I guess. Not sure about him myself but... oh well.

EDIT: ME1 Liara was a waste IMHO. A chance for the sci-fi fan to be f***ing weird IMHO. LofSB gave her a back bone and a life not based on being Shepard's satellite so she is cool now unless they ruin her in ME3.

Kaidan is awesome and perfect and beyond reproach once you get past the awkward "look here! Kaidan is a LI!" scenes in ME1. And Garrus is a dinosaur with a sexy voice who digs Korean chicks and I cannot blame him.

I like Tali so long as I can stay away from obsessive Talimancers. Her romance is... wrong to me since it makes her look like a preteen girl talking to a male Shepard who suddenly assumes a Master's degree in Creepy.

@ Chun Hei -- Okay, good, you put a diplomatic line out there to Miranda fans, but then you decided to take a swing at Liara.

Just as long as you leave Ashley alone. She's perfect.

Oh, and Wrex. That goes without saying, though.

I took great pleasure deflowering Fenris with both my male and female Hawkes. I want amnesia to be the new cliche for male LIs.

Doesn't Fen have a line about not sleeping with anyone since his memories were purged? (Consensually anyway, which frankly is all that should ever be allowed to count.) I think if you went by a different name, had a slightly different personality and a totally different life when you did it and now can't remember it at all you can reasonably claim virgin status.

(not that virginity isn't an idiotic heterocentric concept to begin with mutter grumble)

Anyway guys everyone is someone's favorite, remember? We don't gotta turn into a character bash thread, the forums do not currently have a shortage.

(Except Wrex. **** that guy.)

(With a dudeShep, in a loving cross-species hookup of manly awesomeness. Ha! Gotcha Abispa :D)

Sadly someone else tapped that before you. :P

@Quething: I think that line is only there for FemHawke. I assume he was getting it on with the Fog Warriors. "Free with their affections."  Not to mention he could've slept with someone before he became Danarius' pet consensually. I really doubt he was a virgin even if we take out non-consenual encounters. He's about 30 something.

Not exactly. We know who will be romanceable just not to who. It's guaranteed though that there are two non-squadmate LI who will be avaiable to same-sex.

This is true, but I suppose it depends upon the Shepard.  Some of mine didn't trust him and only worked with Cerberus as a means to end.  Some felt manipulated because they were the reason she still lived and one actively believed in their mission.  I think you're right in that his role is more nuanced, BUT- I still think that when you lay out the options that FemShep has versus manShep, their respective partners are NOT treated equallly as far as being  given plot prominence.

Jacob is fabulous as is Kaidan and (I admit I have biases against Thane but that's a personal thing...I just don't have a lot of empathy for deadbeat dads and readily admit that's my OWN issue and the "poetic" solipsism thing induces heavy eyeroll from me...) and I am looking forward to Vega.  I just think that the straight male romances in ME2 are treated with more weight in that their respective partners have better perceived roles.  *quietly waves all bi flag*

I took great pleasure deflowering Fenris with both my male and female Hawkes. I want amnesia to be the new cliche for male LIs.

Hehe.  Amnesia should replace Carth syndrome for sure.  Fenris ftw!

Haha, nobody on the Normandy should have any idea whoTF they are or wtf they're doing there. Amnesia for everybody! If nothing else it wouldy help explain the inevitable failure for choices in prior games to have meaningful consequences.

What a great opening for ME3. The entire crew picks themselves off the floor, looking around, not recognizing each other or having any idea what the hell is going on. Then Saren walks in...
