Lots of reasons, it makes (Vega) or whoever it is, a lot more believable. Sexualtiy is a super important part of people's identities and whether you are straight or gay can define a lot. A purely gay character makes for a more developed, deeper character than someone who just swings both ways on a whim.

Wow.

WOW.

Really?

Stardusk78 wrote...

I didn't say it was anymore WORTHY, just more realistic and defined. I assume you are a gay male and don't find females attractive, well that is something more defining that going both ways, just like I don't find men attractive.

Why is it less defined? I suppose you could say it's less "definite" but, well, why would you ever need to say that?

Stardusk78 wrote...

I will admit I am a bi sceptic because the few bi people I have met all turned out to be gay later, just my experience.

Clearly.

after all no one is wholly one thing or the other but if the 1-10 scale is used, how many people are really a solid 5 right in the middle, finding both women and men equally attactive? Not too many I suspect. So, do I believe that there might be 6.5s out there, sure. In fact one of my gay friends (he calls himself gay) still occasionally wanks to straight porn but admits he prefers gay porn, you can call him bisexual or gay depending on the interpretation I guess.

Ah, I think I see what the problem is. I'm only familiar with one sexuality "scale" (the old Kinsey scale) but everything that's not a 0 (heterosexual) or a 6 (homosexual) is bisexual, to whatever degree. (Asexual is off to the side somewhere, I don't think they'd thought of that in the 1950s)

So... I guess I might as well tell you this, the men you mentioned were most likely gay all along (just a guess I've never even met them). Most people don't wake up one morning and know that they're gay. They might think: oh that man is very attractive, do you suppose I might be bisexual? And then later: Oh actually I've no interest in women really. I suppose I might be gay after all.

Or they might be bisexual and prefer men to women so they tell people that they're gay when it comes up rather than trying to convince everyone that bisexuals really do exist all the time. ...That's what I do, depending on who I'm talking to obviously (perhaps it's the wrong way to go about things but it saves hassle and seems like less of a lie than saying that I'm straight... I don't know )

All I know is that I wish I were gay.

It's not an issue of merely sharing the bed with something, straight or gay, an entire aspect of another spectrum of the population is not of romantic interest to you. That is a pretty defining quality I think.

</ends any serious discussion>

If I get to play a dude who can romance Kaidan, I'm going to be pretty happy.

Oh, man, boring, level headed thirty somethings!

... That wasn't sarcasm...

Old characters? Only Kaidan & Ash will perhaps be available. We just don't know yet since the lines for their new romances (not continued ones) are written gender neutral so it could go either way. Apart from them, unfortunately none of the old characters has any chance to be available for s/s romance. Not counting Liara & Kelly of course who's already been available in previous games.

Taking into considerations of the spoiler leaks, I get the feeling that Kelly and Joker will end up being the Gay/Bi options.

Oh, man, seriously? I wish they'd do the "all rather willing to consider your PC" like they did in Dragon Age.

It's not like we ever expected they would make ALL old LIs available, there was just too many of them. We'll be good if at least Ash & Kaidan are available.

but if A/K are S/S then im fine. I would love to see Joker, but VS is fine. REALLY was hoping for Tali to be one though.

Yeah, I know.

I suppose I'd be too delighted to notice any of the others if Kaidan's open. I'm getting kinda tired of the Forever Alone thing. Sure I'm not alone on that.

Garrus is defenitely FemShep only for ME3.  The leaks make that very clear.

Also, have they confirmed who you can choose from Virmire if you don't have a save from the previous games? If not, I have my doubts about Ash/Kaidan because they default to the opposite sex of your Shepard.

It's because of this that I think Vega must be a s/s love interest. Male Shep would ONLY have Cortez. B)

I think making them all Shepardsexual, just like everyone in DA2 was Hawke sexual. I thought I tread somewhere in an interview that Chris Priestly said that a Gay or straight character was completely up to you, in one playthrough they may be straight, in another they may be gay.

Bioware haven't yet said if or how players can adjust their new game settings.

But to my mind the opposite is true, I think it'd be more likely that the same-gendered VS would be an s/s option if the opposite-gendered one was default for new ME3 games.

Only a tiny proportion of people seem to have saved the opposite-gendered one, and all new ME2/ME3 saves have the same-gendered one dead, so if Bioware are looking for a romance that'll attract the least amount of attention they'd do it with the same-gendered VS.

(Though given how prominent an actual gay-married soldier is in the game, I don't think being subtle is Bioware's aim here.)

Also, 'new' romances of some sort are possible with the VS, and the dialogue looks remarkably gender-neutral. We don't know if the lines in the leaks are for maleShep with these particular characters, or femShep, or both, but if I had to guess they're available for both.

It means that going to the expense of creating a femShep/Ashley or mShep/Kaidan romance isn't actually very high, since a vast amount of the content (or, at least, the VS' lines) are common to the other gender.

But again: this is all speculation, I'd err on the side of caution but certainly nothing we've seen has ruled out an s/s romance with the VS.

Do you have any evidence to this?  Beacuse I know a looooooooot of male players who play as FemShep and still kill off Kaidan.

And a ton of people are going to be playing the series with no introduction and/or don't want to be bothered by the save import nonsense beause...let's face it, very few of your choices matter in the long run.  Ash and Kaidan serve the exact same purpose in the second and third games.

I'll happily eat crow if I'm wrong but I really get the feeling Cortez is the only s/s option.

The best evidence we have is Bioware's internal telemetry data, and they aren't exactly giving us precise information.

We do know that just 18% of players used a female Shepard, for example, in ME2. (http://www.destructo...ng-188362.phtml). We can't use that to predict the ME-femsheps-who-killed-Kaidan numbers, but I'd suggest it's a fair indication that total femShep numbers across both games aren't very high at all.

Casey Hudson has said previously that there's 'not a lot of love for Kaidan' in the fanbase, which he later clarified as meaning that their internal numbers said most people killed him off on Virmire.

We don't know how severe these numbers swing, but if I had to take a guess, mSheps who killed him off would represent by far the largest Shepard-VS combination. FemSheps are in themselves a small fraction of the player base, and femSheps who save Ashley would (I'd suggest) be smaller still.

As for there only being one m/m option: sure, it's a possibility.

But I don't think it's probable. The romance dialogue for other characters seems to be too ambiguous to be a coincidence, and given that there's already a 'wow I have feelings for you' scene for newly romancing Shepards, I'd wager this is avaiable for both genders of them.

Casey confirmed twice there will be some kinf of choices generator built in the game.

But FemShep statistic alone doesn't tell us anything. Kaidan has the advantage of Liara's presence. Many straight mShep players Virmired Ash because Liara was their LI. This doesn't happen with FemShep since Kaidan is the only LI. So yes, while I do not doubt Kaidan is dead in most games, it may not be as high percentage as people think.

And yes, it may be considered a problem that he may be dead in some people's playthroughs. At the same time, Kaidan's the only male LI at this point that could provide gay players any kind of semi-trilogy-romance option. If you read Ashley's page in The Art of Mass Effect Universe, it's clear that giving players trilogy-romance option was important to them, so they may want to at least give gay players some kind of a substitue and that's only possible with Kaidan now.

Patrick Weekes explaines in a remarkable LJ post why he typically writes Shepard as gender neutral character.  Here is his follow up post too, which is also a good read.
